Ship Reviews

Our first river cruise and it did not disappoint. At first we were notified of a disruption to our cruise as the ship could not have us board as scheduled due a lock undergoing repairs short of Nuremberg. Although initially disappointed it turned out to be a bonus as we were picked up by bus to be transported to a dock in Kelheim, a beautiful part of the world! As we had explored Nuremberg in previous days it did not matter. Amawaterways moved quickly to organise alternative tour arrangements. Great to have all your tours included with afternoon time to explore on your own. Our cabin (3**) was really spacious which we were surprised with as it is a contrast to ocean cruising where cabin space can be limited. We enjoyed immensely our daily breakfast lunch and dinner, service being impeccable. Loved the crew!!! My wife and I prefer to dine and enjoy our experiences in a more intimate setting which we can on ocean cruising, however, at times, with river cruising we found that this was not always possible. This is by no way a criticism but a statement of the ambiance of the intimate and smaller environment. The company shared at times was very enjoyable. Such nice people! Overall a very pleasant experience and so relaxing.

We took our first river cruise on AmaLea, Budapest to Vilshofen. We really enjoyed it. Service was friendly and expert, staff were always helpful. Food was wonderful, including the special chef's tasting dinner. Only one exception - my wife ordered a poached egg one morning, always a test of a kitchen. It was perfectly done. But cold. There are no tables for two. Plenty of tables for four so if you take one of them, you likely will have no table mates. Tour guides were all excellent and very knowledgeable. We got lots of history for a part of the world that was new to us. Mind you, looking back there was castles, churches and narrow medieval streets every day and we are left trying to remember what happened where. Off the ship every morning at 9:00 for a tour either on foot or by bus. We were slightly surprised that 95% of our fellow passengers were American - not a complaint, just an observation. We had expected some portion of Brits, Canadians, Europeans and maybe Aussies. We did make friends with some lovely people. Evening entertainment in the lounge was provided by local performers and was always very enjoyable. For this time of year we were blessed with nice weather so we got lucky.

We have been on two other river cruises with other companies and found this ship and the number of activities planned to be very nice. The daily fitness classes, the small gym and the pool for swimming were great. The excursions on the bikes were a lot of fun and we enjoyed those very much. I found the ship to be very nice and enjoyed the deep seating area up top and the seating outside the lounge. we had a sunny day in port and had our bistro lunch outside instead of in the lounge. The daily sail-away cocktail hour was fun and a great way to connect with folks. We liked the variety of onboard entertainment and we had a great Halloween party on board. The crew decorated the ship and we improvised costumes though they provided us with decorative hats and what not. Our room was plenty big with lots of storage for our clothes. Plenty of hangers in the closet and lots of storage. I liked the balcony and the little bump out seating area. The window in the bathroom with the clear/solid button was cool. I want a window like that. Beds were comfortable and our attendant Ceceng kept our room spotless and got to know our preferences by leaving our ice bucket full daily. Dining on the ship was good but some in our party said things lacked seasoning and we all wished that at lunch there could have been a salad bar. I enjoyed it all and had no complaints about the food. The tasting menu night at the special dining room was a lot of fun and the food was great. I would like to see 2nd coffee machine onboard to control the morning rush for coffee and tea. The we liked the tours and excursions that we participated in. The guides were very nice and the bike tours were a lot of fun. The staff on AmaLea were very engaging and fun to interact with. Particularly the restaurant and bar staff.

We chose this cruise because my sister had previously cruised with AMA waterways. Everything was perfect from our early arrival, hoping to drop our luggage off and go into the town to grab some lunch, instead the wonderful staff made us feel so welcome, gave us drinks and snacks and then plates of pasta. The staff was amazing, the rooms were very nice, the food and drink was delicious. The weather was fantastic, not one cloud the entire week. The excursions were very nice, well informative. The concert was lovely (although very warm and way overcrowded). The deck was beautiful, and we enjoyed each evening up there before dinner. We have only high praise for all the employees. We would definitely travel your river cruises again. We thought the service was outstanding, especially Daphney, Patricia, YaZar, Kai, Sainte, David, Andrew, I can't remember our maids name but she was wonderful, friendly, sweet and efficient.
