Ship Reviews

AmaWaterways was recommended by our travel consultant. We enjoyed the cruise very much - there were only 43 passengers on this sailing so we all received fabulous personal attention and the staff was very professional but it was a more relaxed atmosphere for everyone. We took the pre-cruise extension in Amsterdam which we would recommend. We did not take the post-cruise extension as we were travelling on to visit family in Germany. I would recommend getting airport transfers to the hotel in Amsterdam. The stops on the cruise were excellent - we saw a lot and the guides on the tours were all good to excellent. I would have liked more time at the stops with more free time to explore outside the group excursion. The food on the ship was excellent but very formal—lots of courses, small servings. This might not appeal to everyone. Sometimes, you just want a hearty soup and a sandwich for lunch, for example. The desserts were beautiful to look at, but the ice cream was my favourite. It rained a lot in Amsterdam which did affect the excursions, and it was very hot the last few days. Of course, you can’t let weather get in the way when you are travelling. We met nice people on the cruise and we had a very nice time on board the ship. The cruise day on the Rhine past all the castles was very memorable. I loved Bernkastel, Strasbourg, and Freiburg on market day! I would take another tour with AmaWaterways in the future.

Highlight of the cruise was cruising through the Rhine Gorge and the after cruise extension to Reims, France. Bernkastle was charming beyond words. My cabin had the half French door/half veranda configuration. I loved sitting on the veranda. Everything else about the cabin was very comfortable. The bathroom was especially roomy, I thought, for a ship. My main beef was the absolute terrible quality of the included wine by the glass. I suggest that Ama continue to offer this plonk for those who only want what’s free, but also order a selection of better wines by the glass for purchase. As a solo traveler, I don’t always want to buy a bottle, but even the bottles available weren’t very good. The food was good, but the dining room sometimes seemed to get caught off-guard if you come in any other time but the very start of the meal hour. This

As a student of viticulture, this cruise took me from one wine region to another with guided tours of wineries with several wine varietals. We even had a guest wine make on board who brought his own wines for us to taste. The beauty of our stops were magnificent. The highlight of the cruise was coming across an unplanned event, a Wine Festival in the beautiful town of Cochem Germany. We had the chance to watch the parade as we climbed the hill to the local castle with our guide who was a retired policeman and knew all of the short cuts. The wineries chosen to tour usually had the owner of the winery as our guide which allowed us to ask questions about how, when and aging of each of the varietals we had the honor of tasting. On board the ship, the wine poured freely, there was no reason to purchase wine in town!
