AmaDouro

The popularity of Portugal and Spain’s Douro Valley cannot be ignored—that’s why we debuted our spectacular AmaDouro, adding a second ship to the region and enabling even so more guests to enjoy this experience! Like our other ships, AmaDouro features spacious, elegantly appointed staterooms, most of which include balconies to take in views of the breathtaking hills and terraced vineyards along the river. Staterooms also include Entertainment-On-Demand, featuring free high-speed Internet access, unlimited Wi-Fi, movies, music and English-language TV stations; climate-controlled air conditioning; and an in-room safe. AmaDouro’s Panoramic Lounge is a stylish and inviting space to enjoy a glass of wine or a cocktail along with our nightly entertainment. The ship also features a massage room, fitness room, sun-deck swimming pool and a gift shop, as well as the culinary delights of the Main Restaurant, where you’ll be able to sample the region’s famous Port wine.

Ship Reviews

We chose this cruise after recommendation and I have say we were not disappointed with the Douro Valley. It was breathtaking., However, although the cruising experience was wonderful, the trips involved lots of coach travel and my partner does not travel well in a coach. Also most trips involved wine tasting which, after a while, become a little repetitive. Unfortunately, if one chose not to go on the organised trip, the docking locations did not offer much in the way of alternative. The ship itself was beautifully appointed, although the corridor carpets were rather shabby. The food was excellent. Staff were very friendly and obliging and our cabin was kept immaculate. The Entertainments Manager was enthusiastic and informative and entertainment of some kind was provided every evening. Comparing this to a cruise on the Danube with Riviera, and taking everything into consideration, including a greater number of British passengers, I feel that the latter was more appropriate for me. Nevertheless we enjoyed the cruise immensely.

I needed a specific date so chose AMA after previously enjoying three river cruises with Tauck which is tops and a good recommendation from my travel agent. I did not expect things to be as nice as Tauck and I was pleasantly surprised. The ship (built in 2019) was lovely, the staff was outstanding, the itinerary wonderful, the food delicious and the scenery more beautiful than I had imagined. I especially enjoyed the outing to Salamanca which is a gorgeous city and a chance to visit Spain. Didn’t even mind the long bus ride as the scenery was so lovely and we had perfect WiFi in the bus which each day. Our guide, Raphael, was so knowledgeable and interesting and I learned so much from him. Happy hour with fun cocktails in the lounge before dinner was always festive with good info from our cruise director Andre about the next day’s activities. Dinner was always wonderful with plenty of delicious white and red local wine on offer. The servers were very professional and friendly, too. Breakfast buffet was very good and there was a great coffee machine to use throughout the day with excellent coffee drinks and cookies, too. Front desk staff was always helpful. There were several local musical programs which were so touching and authentic and the lounge musician, Maria, was excellent. She even sang fado one evening. Arrival and departure were both smooth with plenty of individual attention and well organized.
