Ship Reviews

There were 8 of us on this Ama Waterways river cruise put on by Wings travel… mostly family with some of our party 70+. We actually started the package in Cairo visiting the Museums and Giza Pyramids before we flew to Luxor where the cruise actually embarks. Cairo / Giza is an amazing city but a little dirty and highly polluted which should surprise no one since there are 28 million people living there. We were met at the airport by our cruise manger named Chedi you become your best friend and you will find to be simply amazing. Chedi helped us through customs and the mandatory Covid testing, check in at the hotel and deals with the little things brilliantly. Then it was straight to the Four Seasons where Ama Waterways has a small HQ set up to manage the 3 day land portion before flying to Luxor. Our stay at the Four Seasons was amazing I loved the entire place. Great food amazing pool and luxury all the way-at Four Seasons... and tight security at the hotel and on each trip even during the cruise... and frankly, everywhere… if you have an inkling about safety put it to rest this was VERY safe. I am a retired police officer so believe me, I was looking. This trip is VERY organized and ON TIME everywhere. We met our Guide named Mohammed who quite frankly could be the most knowledgeable and articulate man I have met in my life. His grasp of Egyptology, politics and the social climate of Cairo and Egypt is nothing less than astounding and he has a wonderful dry sense of humor. Frankly, he should be teaching Indiana Jones type classes at an American University somewhere, yes he is that good. The tour busses for commuting are high end, and very clean and cool A/C. Mohammed took us to the Pyramids and the Museum for our two land trips and they were flawless. They have the typical earphone system to listen to the guide which works well. Our guide let us wander nd did not micro-manage, just kept his purple flag up and made sure we could here all of the important stuff. I don’t have to say how amazing the historic sights are, this is the reason you are reading this review. They blow your mind – ALL OF THEM so Im just gonna talk about the boat and logistics. I’ll just say get your phone camera ready there are lots chances at amazing photos for IG and FB. Flew to Luxor- no issues. Got to our boat the “Amadahlia” and had a warm welcome. Boat is big but not huge. Rooms are nice and the A/C is adjustable by the bed and runs cool because it is VERY hot in Egypt. Some days we were at 116f. Two sinks in bathroom and nice shower. Housekeeping is impeccable. Dining room is nicely set up and the servers attend to your every need refilling wine and beer liberally without pause. Food on the boat has many varieties of Middle Eastern foods – which is not my fave but was actually pretty good…but is delicious hot and cooked perfectly. A lot of hummus, pita, tabooli and very healthy foods - but also some typical European / American stuff with great steaks, lamb and chicken fries and chips also as proteins. Great salad bar always available. If you like American fare there is always a cheeseburger available which I had a few times and it is actually quite good. Drinks are free at every meal and at happy hour each day which is one hour. Wines are good and beer could be a little colder. All liquors except whiskey. Drinks up on the sun deck and at the pool are delivered quickly and made perfectly. We had some entertainment every other night that was both interesting and cultural.. so much fun! I didn’t make it to the gym, but some other tourists told me it was nice. VERY nice gift shop on the boat with all kinds of cool jewelry and trinkets. The serving manager named Islam is fabulous and the Boat manager named Fariq is a gracious nice man that is committed to giving you top quality service at every moment. Some of the past reviews are questionable but as of May 2022 I can say this was the trip of a lifetime and we are very grateful to Ama for running such a high end, organized and luxurious tour for us.

We chose this cruise because our Virtuoso Agent suggested it might be elevated from our previous river cruises on another cruise line. She was CORRECT! I want to mention two things. I am a cruise professional with 25 years onboard the top luxury ocean lines, so I have been on hundreds of cruises and tours. On our cruise, the tour/ship was less than half- full, perhaps due to the conflicts in the middle-east. At no time did we, nor any of our new friends and fellow travelers, feel unsafe. On the contrary, we are sure that making this trip at this time allowed us to enjoy the sites with fewer tourists. Don't hesitate to take the trip as you will benefit from the timing. We started with the friendly and efficient airport greeting by Omar with our visas in hand, who checked us into the elegant new Ritz Carlton on the Nile, alongside the Egyptian Museum. The trip started on the right foot. Breakfast and lunch buffets at the Ritz were topnotch, with myriad international and Middle Eastern choices and a real-deal French pastry chef for breads and sweets. Our tour manager, Walla Badour met us at his desk and gave us an orientation with staggering efficiency and professionalism. We were thrilled to find that he would also be our Egyptologist and guide throughout the trip. We have never seen a better guide, balancing his complete knowledge of Egyptian culture and history with clear easy-to -follow presentation skills. These trips involve a lot of logistics and a bit of finesse in getting your guests to the right place at the right moment to maximize their experience. Walla was a pro at this. During the land portions we ate at the most famous iconic hotels and saw so much more than we could have dreamed of. The length of the cruise portion and the careful planning by AMAWaterways allowed us to have a fuller experience beyond the competitive lines. The ship was fresh and clean, with a breezy, mid-century inspired interior and spacious cabins with marble baths with separate tubs and cleverly-designed glass showers and double vanities. Our suite (Lotus Deck) had a French balcony and also a small regular balcony. For us and our travel companions, the casual and tasteful interiors were perfect for the climate and vibe of the tour. The Chef's alfresco restaurant was not only delicious, but the design provided perfect comfort, perfect lighting, and a real "experience." Our hotel manager, Rafik, was a beacon of good-natured hospitality. His staff and crew managed to perfectly achieve the precarious balance between being both present and professional and also warm and friendly. The ship was spotless and the laundry service (there is no dry cleaning) was fast, neat and remarkably inexpensive. Entertainment was local and as expected on an itinerary such as this. Just enough to introduce us to the culture, and scheduled to accommodate for the touring schedule. Please note, on this and some other itineraries, the boats will dock side by side, which means that you will cross through the lobbies of other ships and onto your ship. AMA arranged to always be on the "outside" of the batch, so we were not wedged between other ships. After untold adventures, we flew back from Luxor to Cairo, for our final night at the Ritz. Whilst waiting for our rooms to be ready, we had an EXCLUSIVE tour of the royal/presidential palace , followed by an outstanding lunch in the ballroom catered by the Ritz Carlton. We settled into our rooms, and the cruise managers again coordinated our airport transfers, escorting us to the gates and wishing us farewell. These types of tours are, by nature, logistically challenging and fast-paced. Walla, Rafik, and AMAWaterways managed to orchestrate a near- perfect experience that far exceeded our high expectations. So...in short...GO NOW, enjoy AMADahlia, and have the memorable trip of a lifetime.
