Ship Reviews

We had a very nice time on the Amalilia as well as on the land tour in Cairo. The hotel was new ( St Regis), food and room excellent and the visits were well planned. The cruise manger Mohammed Saleh took charge from the first minute to the last and we felt totally secure and at ease. The Egyptologist Amal was also excellent. We were only 24 guests so we were upgraded on the ship and treated like royalty. The ship is brand new , the refrigerated pool is well appreciated and the decor is beautiful. The only hiccup is the wine and bar service, the staff need training and please find better wine !! All the ports were well organized and we saw a LOT in a few days. For us the highlight was the Abu Simbel excursion, unbelievable !!! We felt very safe but hot, it is summer in Egypt !!! We would recommend this ship and excursion to everybody !

Where to begin! The ship was beautiful (brand new) with lots of relaxing, comfortable common space. One thing that I noticed was the quiet; our ship docked at private docks. We did NOT have to go through other ships to reach the dock. We were never bothered by ship engine noises or fumes. Rooms were on the small side but we really didn't hang out in our room much, we were so busy and common spaces so nice. Hot water for a shower was almost instantly available; that was great and unexpected! The staff was wonderful, helpful and engaging. The front desk assistant taught me a new Egyptian word each day! Shokran! The FOOD was AMAZING! There was always an Egyptian option to get a sample of the local cuisine and I couldn't fit in all that I wanted to try! The excursions were beyond incredible, the Egyptologists informative, and more awesome than we expected. We wouldn't have gotten even an ounce of what we learned by having an expert show us the nuances of the temples and pyramids. YOU HAVE TO GO!

The AMALilia is a 2024 build ship so needless to say, it's still in great shape, and benefits from often docking at private docks of the local AMA partner Wings Europe keeping you out of the tremendous raft stacks at some of the more popular ports. This cruise starts as a land cruise in Cairo before flying to Luxor for a 7 day cruise and then returns to Cairo for departure (with optional extensions before or after to Dubai or Jordan). This is a good length, some companies only do nile cruises of 3-4 days which in my opinion is way way too short, I feel this cruise could be longer. While unlike most AMA cruise, there are few choices of excursion, this trip included a day trip to Abu Simbel by air, which was well worth the additional cost. While certainly not an inexpensive trip, I feel like this is something that everyone should do at least once in their life. I posted a day by day review during the cruise which can be found here https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/3044465-amawaterways-secrets-of-egypt-the-nile-cairo-to-cairo-amalilia-1132025

The 11 day trip to Cairo and cruise on the Nile with AMA Waterways was amazing and a bucket list trip for sure. Here are some highlights and an attempt to answer questions that you might have. 1. We always felt safe. On most days, when we had to take a bus to an archeological site, we had armed security. We never felt unsafe. 2. We went in September. The crowds were non-existent. But it was HOT on some days. But it wasn't a problem. There was always plenty cold bottled water provided. But here are a few tips: bring a small personal umbrella with SPF rating 50+ (we used these all the time); bring excellent suglasses; consider a personal handheld fan that also has misting capabilities ($20); no need to bring your own Swell or Hydroflask (it'll just weigh you down and the water won't stay cold, anyway). 3. The service/attention was 10/10. The hotel in Cairo and the meals in Cairo were fantastic. All transfers were seamless. The cruise director (Samer) and our guides got us a private tour of the Agatha Christie room and the Winston Churchill room at the Old Cataract Hotel (whoa!). I realize that most people won't be able to get that experience, but that is an example of the effort that they put into making our trip an experience of a lifetime. 4. The Egyptologists (Islam and Wahid) were amazing. They were so knowledgeable and engaging. 5. We found the food om-board to be excellent. Generally, the meats were well-done/overcooked. But the variety for all meals was great. 6. Read up on Egypt and history before you go. Something fun like Agatha Christie's "Death on the Nile"; something about the Rosetta stone; and an amazing book by Toby Wilkinson called "The Nile: travelling downriver through Egypt's past and present". 7. Cruising up or down the Nile and watching 5,000 years of civilization pass you by was the experience of a lifetime.
