Ship Reviews

I don't believe the ship was full, very few children so great week to travel. We used Park n Go instead of the Port Parking; Less cost, excellent service Embarkation/ Debarkation: easy with the Xpress pass on the app.  Concierge Class Lunch was a nice feature while waiting for cabin #1 Dining.  There was no early/late seating. Received a card the first night to show up at Tuscan 8:15pm. Was not explained that the ship is anytime dining.  We worked it out to have the same waiter some of the nights but they don't get to know you at all. Our expectations were different so it was something we had to adjust to.  The sommelier did get to know us.  We loved Ben.  #2 Cabins - the concierge class cabin was smaller than what we had on the APEX.  Not many storage options, we had to keep organized.  Sheets were not changed the entire time, which was probably okay but usually they are by day 3.  No big deal, just something noticed.  We did receive the sparkling wine the first day and canopies at 2:30. #3 Major shows at The Club, the venue is too small as it only holds 100 people. Missed some shows because we could not get in. Disappointing. #4 Captain Tasos - gorgeous, really funny but not as approachable as the APEX captain. We did have "rough seas/20ft rollers" we avoided so that was appreciated.  Many guests thought the ship was moving a lot, for sailors "we're tipped to starboard and on plane doing 20 kts woo hoo!"  #5 Loved the pizza making class in Eden, they provided a very nice lunch with our pizzas. Exceeded expectations. #6 SPA - I took advantage of the top to toe port special and had a manicure.

We spent 25 days on the Ascent in Fall 2024. We did back-to-back, including the Greek islands and then crossing to Fort Lauderdale. My wife and I both agreed this was a weak 4-star experience, maybe more like 3.7. So I guess we rounded up. The ship itself is amazing. We loved the high-tech theater. Some of the in-house shows seem to be designed around the theater's multi-media capabilities. "Awaken" in particular was an absolutely amazing show. With very few exceptions, the crew and staff were always friendly, helpful, and competent. All facilities were clean and well-maintained. We had the infinite veranda, and since we changed rooms for the 2nd cruise, we saw both configurations. We preferred the bed in the middle (not near the window), though both configurations have pros and cons. The infinite veranda was great and much more useful than the conventional veranda design. On cool nights, we dropped the window about 6 inches for a cool breeze and the calming sound of the ocean. Nice bathroom and plenty of storage space. Aside from "Awaken" and some other in-house shows, the nightly entertainment was the usual mix of below-average comics, magicians, and singers. The house band and solo musicians were similarly so-so. On prior Celebrity cruises, the quality of entertainment was a few notches better. Excursions were well organized and professional. As expected, some were better than others, depending largely on the tour guide. We had excellent experiences in Naples, Gibralter, and the Azores, with fairly poor experiences in Turkey and the Greek islands. The hard-sell rug merchant in Turkey was a bit over-the-top. And the crowds on Santorini were beyond ridiculous. The bars and drinks were all pretty good. Service quality varied a little bit. We had the Premium package and quickly discovered some Premium wines and spirits that we enjoyed. Unfortunately, availability is very limited. Not all bars and restaurants have the same offering and even if you find a bar with the wine you like, it will probably be unavailable the next day. So we ended up drinking lots of so-so wine. That was very disappointing. Even the fancy pants bar on 5 had no Hendricks gin when we were there. Food was also a mixed bag. We could always find something we liked at the buffet, though quality was highly variable. Sometimes, I wandered around for 15 minutes before deciding how to assemble something I might like. The 4 main restaurants were "OK." Our first night in Tuscan was amazing. After that, service was slower and the food got boring and repetitive. We had an amazing experience at Le Petit Chef and Raw on 5. We went to the steakhouse twice... first time was amazing, second time was terrible. Lunch at the Rooftop Garden Grill was also pretty bad. Never tried Le Voyage or Eden despite all the positive reviews. There were no convenient times available. Plus the menu and price was a huge turn-off for a 9:30 sitting. Aside from the always-annoying exclusivity thing... where huge chunks of the theater (and ship in general) are reserved for suite people and other apparent dignitaries, the biggest negative on this cruise was the poor-quality internet and app. We paid for Premium Wifi, which uses the SpaceX Starlink service. But the bandwidth was throttled to 5Mbps and that's when it was actually working. Performance was very unreliable. I found that I could get slightly better Wifi in less-crowded areas of the ship, but even that was unreliable. I spent untold hours trying to reconnect to Wifi. I bought a cheap eSIM for all Europe and that worked MUCH better as long as we were in port or near the coast. The app was terrible in every way. I wrote a separate review on the Play Store so I won't repeat all that here. Overall, I hope this doesn't come off too negative. There's a LOT to like about Celebrity in general and the Ascent specifically. We had a great time and will cruise with Celebrity again in the future. I think the newness of the ship explains some of the negative experiences we had. We've heard nothing but great things about the Beyond. The Ascent just needs a bit more time to fix some fairly basic operational issues.

About to end this cruise. For the most part it has been top notch. The ship is beautiful. The staff is extremely well trained an exceptionally pleasant to be around. We had no negative crew issues. The entertainment is the best we have seen during our previous 7 cruises. The cruise director, Kate, was visible and very involved in daily program. No complaints other than we could not see everything since there was so much entertainment. Food: The food was good to very good depending on the location and menu. The buffet was similar to others we have seen. It is organized well with multiple food stations. The main dinning rooms (there are 4) were in general very good. Each one had the standard menu plus a couple of dishes that were specific to that restaurant. Most of what we had in the main DR was good to very good and above average compared to previous cruises. There is specialty dining in four restaurants. We ate in three. Eden is the winner here with an interesting menu, exceptional service and ambiance. Raw on 5 is a fresh seafood restaurant. The food is very good and fresh. Luminae, the restaurant in the retreat was also very good however we found the menu fairly limited. The service was exceptional. Excursions: This where the 5th star fell off. Of course they were over priced. However getting off the ship was well organized and efficient. The tours themselves often left much to be desired. Naples - Sorrento - great guide. Had the required stop to shill for product - this one a trinket and liquor store. In Sorrrento there must have been 10,000 people. There was nothing attractive about the experience. Olympia - excellent guide, did a great job explaining the ruins and the way of life of the people. Busy but enjoyable. Athens: Bus tour and climb to the Acropolis. It was fine and the climb was not nearly as bad as expected from reading other reviews. About as expected. Mykonos: Not the tour’s fault but we cannot figure out what the attraction is. The water is beautiful but to us it seemed like a rock in the ocean. The guide however was very good. Rhodes we decided to take a private tour of the island with Konstantinos with Rodos Emerald tours. Very good job and we saw most of the major sites, snacked at his grandfathers restaurant (at the base of Rhodes Acropolis) and avoided the standard shill stop. Ephesus: This is where things started to fall apart. We took the small group ruins and rug making tour. The tour guide was excellent and the ruins were a highlight of the trip. However after that we went to the “rug” stop. There was a 15 minute demo, then a drink, some bread and 50 salesman came out of the woodwork to pressure you buy a several thousand dollar rug. If that wasn’t enough you left through a jewelry store that was the same. Totally inappropriate. When back on the ship I mentioned the experience to the excursion desk. Their answer was, “We know.” Santorini: We had read about the misery that Santorini can be. We arrived with 4 other ships. The tender operation was fine. For your tour you are taken to the old port where buses are waiting. The tour part was very good until the winery which was again primarily the required sales job. This was followed by a meal in the main town and then “free time.” There were so many people you really could not do or see much. Then you had to get yourself down to the new port. The choices were 525+ slippery marble steps with donkey dung or the tram. The wait for the tram was 2+ hours. If you have any balance or mobility problems the steps are not for you. There was one person waiting for the EMTs at the top from the stairs. After the fact we were told there was a way to get a bus to the old port and pay a tender fee to get back. That would be well worth investigating. Frankly with 5 ships at the island we would have been just as happy to skip Santorini. You can see why some ports have protests against the cruise industry. Palermo was fine, nothing special but ok. To sum it up, would we cruise on the Ascent again? Absolutely. The ship is beautiful, the staff is top notch, the food is above average and the activities are plentiful. Also, very few kids if that is important. Really the only issue was with the excursions. While Celebrity does not control the excursion provider, they are a big customer who should have some say in what the product is.

And we take that philosophy even further on Celebrity Ascent℠ by bringing back the mouth-watering specialty restaurants created for Celebrity Edge®.

Main Dining

Discover not one but four complimentary main restaurants, each with a distinctive design and signature dishes inspired by specific regions of the world. Now, you’ll find new menus and menu selections across our main restaurants.

On our Celebrity Edge® Series ships, we may have reinvented the main restaurant experience with four restaurants, but we haven’t changed the way you plan your dining in these restaurants. Choose Celebrity Select Dining Anytime, and you can dine in any of the four restaurants when you want. There’s nothing traditional about dining with us. With Celebrity Select Dining the choice of how you plan your evening meals is up to you.

Complimentary Dining
