Winner Best Mid-Sized Ship
Hooray for Koningsdam. A sublime balance of big and small, this mid-size features larger-than-life music venues and activities galore, coupled with small ship service and elbow room.
I have only cruised once before, in 1988 in the Caribbean. We live near San Diego so it was easy to get to the departure terminal and board our ship. Everything worked well and the staff, mostly from the Philippines, were great. The food in the main dining room was world class with excellent service. When we wanted more informal dining we went to the Lido cafe that had many cafeteria type choices. The One Step Dance Company, three guys and three beautiful gals, entertained on three different nights with fantastic shows. Wow. Other nights there was a comic and a singer. We also had our choice of R and B, rock and roll and dueling pianos at three venues on Deck 2. All great. Never a problem getting a waiter to bring a drink. We got the Have It All package for about $800 that included mixed drinks, wine and beer in the music venues, around the pool, and at dining locations. I recommend it. Our room stewart, Armen, was very good. Our beds were made and the room straightened up twice a day. I tipped him extra. The three ports, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas were worth seeing. In the Puerto Vallarta terminal I was quoted $30 for a taxi ride for two to the Malecon. We walked out to the street, flagged down a passing cab, and got the same ride for $10. Agree on the price before you get in . We left the ship about 9:30 am, thinking it would be cooler in the morning. But actually it is cooler after 12 noon because the sea breeze picks up and carries a few blocks inland. I recommend the Vallarta Factory for lunch. There are a number of stores with good prices (my wife advises me) right across the street. In Mazatlan we got a pulmonia golf cart type taxi to the malecon for $12. We saw a cliff driver defy death and then ate at Angelina's restaurant. Then my wife shopped in a plaza nearby. We did the excursion to the art district in San Jose del Cabo and really enjoyed it. Our ship was anchored in the bay only half a mile from the famous rocks that are the southern most tip of Baja. Our room with balcony was compact but very functional. The TV had a number of movies on demand, as well as news stations. A great way to veg out after a day in port or listening to the various music venues. I was concerned about the dress code. But basically there in't much of one. The main dining room would prefer you wear long pants, shoes and a collared shirt. The three specialty restaurants we ate at, Pinnacle, Rudi's and Tamarind, were a little less picky. No need for a coat and tie or even a long sleeve dress shirt. Plus we never had a a problem getting a table for two in the main dining room. We had a great time.
With refined amenities and Holland America Line signature Mariner’s Dream bed gracing each elegant stateroom, the ship offers six grades of staterooms. Most are ocean-facing, many featuring teak-lined verandas for dining alfresco or private sunbathing.
