Nieuw Statendam

Nieuw Statendam

Fluid lines and dramatic spaces make the Holland America Nieuw Statendam a modern beauty. The second in the line of Pinnacle-class cruise ships, its design draws inspiration from the elegant curves of musical instruments. When not relaxing in well-appointed suites or staterooms, guests will have a multitude of innovative dining and entertainment options—from Rudi’s Sel de Mer to Nami Sushi to the Rolling Stone Rock Room, B.B. King’s Blues Club, and the visually stunning two-level World Stage.

Best Cruise Ship Awards

Nieuw Statendam’s inspired design and entertainment options earned it Best New Cruise Ship and Best Mid-Size Cruise Ship awards, among other accolades. Passengers and cruise critics love this sublime ship.

Ship Reviews

Great cruise except but unexpected changes. Drink package has been lowered to $11 from $13 and the prices of drinks has be increased leaving drink package choices very limited. Signs everywhere saying you can just pay the difference. The difference of $1 on a drink becomes 1.72 when the service charge and gratuity are added. Room was very small but had a very large veranda. Dining was a problem for the only time one could get in the eat “any time restaurant “was before 6 or after 8:30. Told they didn’t accept reservations during the 6:00 to 8:30 hrs The wait for a table during that time interval was over 1 hr. At 4 star level one would expect help getting a table. Not so. We will Never do anytime dining again. Other than those problems. This ship has an amazing group of music entertainers. Every night we moved from billboard to bb king for a minimum of 3 hrs.

Nieuw Statendam was a great ship for a family cruise but is not geared towards the 20 something party scene. We went over Christmas with three generations (step mom, her sister and my wife and adult daughters). The main dinning room food was very good. We had some food allergies at our table and they made sure that we ordered the night before to help move dinner along. It did not really help, but we were glad they were aware of the problem. Obviously, one has to keep in mind that it is impossible to individually cook certain items like a steak. If you get that concept then the food was good. I was not a fan of the buffet as they have people serve you and many items are not clearly labeled. Breakfast at the buffet was hard to mess up and they did not mess it up. There was one night that was "cake night." Nothing labeled and a line of people that had waited several minutes to get within sight of the cakes only to be faced with more choices than a cheesecake factory. There are also several people that need a kindergarten refresher course on waiting your turn and how to stand in a line. I also had pizza from their pizza restaurant, and it was good, even the previously prepared slices. We did not do a specialty restaurant as the food in the main dining room was good. I would recommend the Holland cafe. They had energetic staff and good food/desserts including a big chocolate cream puff that was a cousin to an eclair. The entertainment was not my cup of tea, but it was heavy on live music acts. The acts that I saw had talent and engaged the crowd. We recently also sailed on Utopia of the Seas and the two ships were almost polar opposites. On Utopia there was almost over stimulation whereas NS was more sedate. My daughters did several art classes and enjoyed them. If you want an ice skating experience on board this probably is not your ship. Service throughout the ship was very good. I did AquaTrax/Jetski on Half Moon Cay. It was a lot of fun even though I had never done a jetski before. In Ocho Rios we did a tour to Bob Marley's birth place, which is also his resting place, 9 mile. We used Oneal Tours. He was great and if you are looking for something to see a non-tourist side of Jamaica. He is on instagram and probably other social media as well. It was reasonably priced and Oneal was great. We were in Grand Cayaman on Christmas day. Many things were closed, but there were a number of shops and a few restaurants open. We did an island tour but the turtle sanctuary was closed. The rum tasting was dropping us off at a gift shop. They had rum cake available, but forgot they were to do a rum "tasting" and then brought out a bottle of banana rum and thimble size cups. In Cozumel, I went to the Coba Mayan Ruins and my wife and daughters went to an orphanage and market. If ancient history is interesting to you I cannot recommend Coba enough. I had gone to Tulum before. Coba is just different than Tulum. Recognize that it is a full day and there will be no time for shopping before or after in the port. My wife and daughters enjoyed their excursion but felt it was a little exploitive of the orphans. Embarkation in Ft. Lauderdale was clunky with parking across from the terminal. There were no major issues, just a little bit of show up when you want and we will get you on the ship. Disembarkation was fairly easy although tracking over to the parking deck was not fun. My wife and I had a veranda cabin and my daughters shared an inside room. The inside room had a good bit of space. The veranda room was nice to be a part of the environment whether at night or as we came into port. We were both towards the back of the ship and had no issue with noise.

First time on HAL after many cruises on Celebrity and Princess. I’ll start with the best, the food. New Statendam by far has the best food I’ve experienced on a cruise ship in years. We only did one night special dining at the steak house, it was excellent. But the real star was the main dining room. Every meal from apps, to main course, to desert was superb. The rack of lamb and the NY strip were highlights, but everything else our group of six ordered was very good. The salmon and tuna poke appetizer was so delicious my wife and I ordered a second. The dining room service was a bit lacking with some waits longer than normal. Their are no wine sommelier which we missed, and way they work drinks is strange. The waiter takes all your drink orders but they bring the drinks out separately by different waiters one at a time on a tray with several drinks for other tables. Half the party may have their cocktail, while the other half is waiting several minutes for another waiter to bring theirs. It’s a strange system, they really should bring all the drinks for the table at one time. Moving on to entertainments, it’s lacking. They had the same comedian two nights of the week in the main theater, he was not funny the first night, we skipped the second. The song and dance production was entertaining and the theater with floor to ceiling surround monitors for the set was very cool. Many reviews here raving about the music venues. We did not care for them as it was very hard to get a seat unless you arrived a half hour early and The Rolling Stones venue was WAY too loud the night we went. The ship felt a bit boring at night, much less lively then we experience on a Celebrity cruise. The cabin was nice an comfortable, room stewards were very attentive. The standard balcony was nice as it is larger then most, and they include a foot rest with each deck chair. The bathroom was very small compared to other ships with little room for toiletries. The pool area was very comfortable with nice cushions on all the lounge chairs. As usual you have to get their early on sea days for a lounge. If your into reading the library was excellent with many copies of new hard cover books available to borrow. I actually thought the library was a book store when I first entered, not the usual worn and water stained paperbacks in most ship library’s. Overall it was a very nice cruise. We probably prefer Celebrity over HAL, but would not hesitate to sail again if the price was right.

This was our fourth cruise (2nd on HAL). In general, we very pleased with this cruise. We are especially fond of the entertainment aboard the HAL ship, especially the 3 music venues. The fitness center is very well equipped, and was never crowded. We also took advantage of a few free stretching classes. We are giving this cruise a very high rating because we just like the overall "vibe" of the New Statendam and the HAL cruise lines. They obviously cater to a more elderly clientele which is fine with us, as we are both 65+. We just like the fact that the ship is "adult-oriented". We had one dinner at the Tamarind specialty restaurant and were quite pleased with the available choices and the food we had. We enjoyed our time on Half Moon Cay--it has the finest sand we have ever seen on a beach! We went on the Stingray Adventure...although it was a little corny (no I don't want to kiss a stingray!), it also had some educational aspects.

We had a great time but there were some serious shortcomings. Pros: Nice size ship Cabin stewards were great. Very Clean Appetizers and Dinner in Dining room were very good. Pool spaces were good and ample The varieties of food venues were great. Room Service Quiet relaxing atmosphere A lot of great spaces to hang Music venues were top notch Embark and disembark was easy Dining Room service was very good. Cons Drink package limit $11.00. Most name brand liquors (not top shelf) were $11.50. Really? Point of service system was a bottleneck at all of the bars. Long lines were super frustrating. Service at pools was sparse and the ship was under capacity. Buffet: Food was good but: Service/Management was awful. Can’t find place settings Can’t get your own drinks and no one came around offering them. Inexplicably running out of things like EGGS, Equal, and Bacon at breakfast. Ran out of beets and tomatoes at the salad station. Menus at the stations were incomplete so you can’t tell where anything is. Went to the Pinnacle Grille. Wasn’t worth the extra money. Would I go back? I Haven’t decided. Will want to try another line first.
