MS Fridtjof Nansen

MS Fridtjof Nansen

Named in homage to Norwegian Explorer - Fridtjof Nansen, this is one of two fully hybrid ships in our fleet. She brings comfort to some of the world's most spectacular destinations, on board one of the most environmentally friendly ships in the world.Interestingly, after Nansen's Fram expedition, the ship was passed on to another great explorer who secretly planned an expedition to the South Pole - Roald Amundsen.

The newest addition to our fleet will honor the heritage of her namesake – the Norwegian explorer, scientist, humanitarian, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Fridtjof Nansen. Known for his innovations in Arctic expeditions, Nansen led the first crossing of Greenland on cross-country skis. He is perhaps most famous for his attempt to reach the geographical North Pole during the Fram Expedition (1893-1896).

Interestingly, after Nansen's Fram expedition, the ship was passed on to another great explorer who secretly planned an expedition to the South Pole - Roald Amundsen.

Serving as your floating base camp to some of the world's most breathtaking landscapes - MS Fritdjof Nansen is at the forefront of sustainable exploration. As one of two hybrid ships within the fleet, the innovative sustainable technology reduces the ship's fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 20%.

The rugged scenery will be reflected inside the ship through the use of Scandinavian materials from nature, such as granite, oak, birch, and wool that invoke a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere in which to unwind. With a host of public spaces including three restaurants, a fitness and wellbeing suite, a state-of-the-art science center, and a two-level indoor/outdoor Observation Deck. It is an ideal place to scan the scenery as you explore the world around you and watch for wildlife with your binoculars.

Ship Reviews

The ship excursions and experiences were very good. I especially appreciated the lecture series and the emphasis on science. I learned so much about Antarctica. The ornithology lectures were great, as were discussions of aquatic life, etiquette for visitors, and the history of Antarctica. I also appreciated being an upgrade (paid) to a suite, which included dining in the Lindstrom Restaurant. The staff was wonderful there, taking care to attend to a solo traveler who didn't want to be tucked away from others. My cabin stewards Mark and Bea were also wonderful. The on-ship personnel were kind and professional. The excursions were really fun, although doing the Polar Plunge from ashore made it challenging to dress and undress right on the beach in very cold and windy conditions. I was able to kayak too. I appreciated the attention to the need for exercise and activity on board. I used the running track and some of the parkour stations on the top deck, although weather determined when I could do that. I also had a great massage in the spa. Now, what I did not like: We had only 11 hours to use our rooms at the Hilton. Check-in time was very late for someone who arrived after a 12 hour flight. I think that HX needs to work with the hotels so that clients are able to check in immediately upon arrival and not wait 7 hours to finally rest. We also departed at 3 AM the next day, with suitcases out in the hall at 8 PM the night before. The "breakfast" was not great -- I see that as a hotel problem and I hope that HX has a chat with Hilton about what they provide. There was an absence of good fruit and breakfast options that were healthier. Scrambled eggs were swimming in cooking liquid. (Ick.) Clients were half awake, and so were the restaurant staff. We were then directed into buses and driven to the airport only to wait for 3+ hours to board our charter. I think greater efficiency of planning arrival and transitions would help, especially with a thought for the guest experience after long hours on a plane. Additionally, there was a very long day of bus-riding in Ushuaia. I realize that was to help staff prepare the ship for new visitors, but a chance to walk around in the town of Ushuaia would have been a good option to sitting on a bus. If there had been later charters, we could have gone directly to the ship. I would have elected that option. Would I do this again? In a heartbeat, and knowing what I do, I would ask more about management of the beginning of the trip -- options would help.

The trip was great and exceeded my expectations by far. We had perfect weather in Patagonia, and the fjords and particularly the Torres del Paine as well as several glaciers were major highlights of the trip. Continuing south, we were able to land at Cape Horn which is rarely possible. In Antarctica, we visited three islands and the mainland peninsula and saw lots of different penguins, seals and birds. The organization of the excursions was perfect. Everything was timely and was subdivided into small groups for activities such as Zodiac cruising, snowboarding and small hikes. The food on board was excellent. In particular, for most dinners, very well-arranged a la carte menus were offered instead of crowded buffets. This was dining in style. Many talks about the destinations visited, the wildlife, the history of former expeditions and much more were give in the lecture hall, forming an interesting, exciting, and sometimes also quite entertaining program. The wellness section with a sauna, a saltwater pool and two jacuzzis was also a pleasure. As a minor criticism, there were quite some waiting times at the explorer lounge bar/cafe, probably due to the all-inclusive policy for drinks and cocktails. In order to serve 300+ people, significantly more staff should be allocated to this bar/cafe. Due to some technical issue towards the end of the trip, our arrival at the destination port Ushuaia was late, so that we missed the planned charter flights to Buenos Aires. The captain, his team, and the whole expedition team did a great job in re-organizing everything. Passengers with short connections in Buenos Aires were instantly booked on regular flights from Ushuaia to Buenos Aires, and for the remaining guests, new charter flights were organized short-term for the next morning. So despite these small problems, I was finally back to Europe as originally scheduled. Congratulations to the HX team, and thanks to them for their engagement and enthusiasm!

Fabulous Cruise and a wonderful experience. Excellent housekeeping onboard (Mark on deck 8 was a star) and the Lindstrom Restaurant exceptional. Medum, Chatey, Jodel, Edward and Marjo expertly managed by their superb catering Manager (whom we had previously met on Maud) Their professionalism demonstrated by their ability to combine a sleek restaurant service with an element of fun ! Quality of food was excellent for which we thank the 'behind the scenes' staff. You are a great team and HX are very lucky to have you all. Tours and experiences from the ship were well organised and it was a pleasure to be accompanied by competant and enthusiastic crew members. The expedition team always around to share their knowledge and experiences, their enthusiasiam is infectious. At all times we felt safe. Safety on board and on exhibition tours was paramount. To float on an icefield in Alaska on one of their Zodiacs was an experience never to be forgotten - Thank you !

Literally a super trip. After pleasent day in Reykjavik the liner was there at time to welcome us onboard together with the always friendly and polite staff. Cabins where clean and when something did not function properly ( air condition and TV ) there where people to attend the issue. Pools, Sauna etc functioned as expected. The bar was handled by competent people, but the price performance of the beverage package did not live up to expectations ( 1 out of the 2 exclusive red wine was sold out the evening we left Reykjavik!) . Pitty because dinner (Linstroem) really diserved quality wine to accompany the exquisite food . But here again service was exellent not he least the waitress " Shady" who where very attentive . Expedition Team where generally very competent and service oriented . The idea of including " lectures" on a special trip like this worked well . But it is important that there are no weaknesses in the chain . Unfortunately Sabine presented an unnecessary biased view of the Danish mismanagement of Greenlanders which was clearly taken out of context relatively to the challenges every colonist states had with their old colonies ( India, Africa, Vietnam etc) after WW 2.

Enrichment

We offer a rich and varied program of optional shore excursions. In many ports, we offer an included excursion, which can be reserved for no additional charge. In many cases the included excursion can be combined with other optional excursions in the port. Most excursions can be pre-booked but may also be bookable onboard if capacity remains.

We advise that you book well in advance in order to avoid disappointment due to the excursion being fully booked. Please note that registration is binding, and once on board the Expedition Team will advise you of booking deadlines for excursions still available. Our excursions have English speaking guides unless otherwise indicated and other languages cannot be guaranteed unless otherwise specified. Excursions are subject to change and possible cancellation due to weather conditions. They are also dependent on the number of participants.

All expedition shore landings and small boat cruising during our exploration of Antarctica are included the programme. Along with the optional excursions available to book, the Expedition Team also arrange a variety of activities during the voyage. These will depend on location and season, but may include hiking, small boat cruising, kayaking, snowshoeing, or camping. A limited amount of kayaking is available for booking prior to select voyages, but all other activities are booked on board and subject to availability.
