Ship Reviews

My Western Mediterranean cruise in November from Rome to Rome on the MSC Lirica was one of the most enjoyable of my many years in cruising (I have taken almost 70 cruises, on all the major cruise lines from Carnival to Silversea). The MSC Lirica is an older (2003) medium-sized (2k passengers) ship that has been beautifully refurbished and is well-maintained. It does not have all the options available on the recently built megaships, but that suits me fine. When I cruise, I do not expect a floating amusement park — I want good service, good food, and interesting ports of call. MSC Lirica exceeded my expectations in all three categories. Best of all, the price was very reasonable. I think that MSC now provides the best value in the cruise industry if you choose the right departure date and itinerary. MSC is especially kind to solo travelers like myself. On most cruise lines, couples usually get a big discount on the second passenger, but solos must pay the full 200% (or more). MSC does not penalize solo travelers — I paid about 140% (of an already low cruise fare) for a solo inside cabin and even received a major upgrade before departure. MSC also excels in itinerary flexibility for its European cruises. Instead of a fixed embarkation once a week, MSC allows groups of passengers to embark at each of the ports of call. This avoids the crowds and headaches usually associated with embarkation day and allows passengers to tailor their start and finish dates to their own schedule. Keep in mind that means that disembarkation at the end of your cruise will begin about an hour after docking, so that excursion and other transit passengers can disembark first for a full day ashore. I enjoyed my MSC Lirica cruise so much that I have booked two (back-to-back) cruises on the MSC Seashore in Florida this January. It is a new megaship that has gotten great reviews on youtube. I am sure it will be a new experience for me, and I will be happy if it is even half as enjoyable as my Lirica cruise was.

We were first-time cruisers, being 60+ and from South Africa. I cannot fault the cruise line at all, everything was perfect. We were not looking for a party cruise with lots of bright lights and noise. The ship is maybe a tiny bit dated decor-wise, but I feel this made it more welcoming. Everything is in perfect condition and spotlessly clean. The crew were amazing, everybody goes out of their way to make your stay pleasant, and they are very helpful. You can see how much preparation goes into all aspects of your cruise, on and off the ship. The food was excellent, with a wide variety to choose from. The buffet is a bit of a zoo, and you need to time your meals there. But the range of food and quality was excellent. We didn't take part in any of the on-board entertainment as we were too tired from the day's exploring. It did look like fun, though. My only small gripe is about the students, particularly the male students who were noisy and disrespectful. Not all of them, but enough that you make sure to avoid being in the same space as them. All in all, a thoroughly pleasant experience in every way.

After two disastrous cruises with MSC with reluctance we went on a cruise from Valencia on MSC Lirica. On arrival in the port for embarkation we were greeted by a female MSC employee who handed me a check in ticket marked No2. I noticed people arriving after me where been handed tickets marked No1 by a male colleague. I asked what the difference was with the tickets only to be told in a sarcastic manner “One Hour” I said that was an inappropriate answer. I was then told go to the Restaurant and wait until I was called. Standing on the outside I was watching people arriving after me still been handed No1. I asked myself the question was this because they were Spanish? As I’m a holder of a Diamond card I was entitled to priority boarding, I went to priority boarding produce my ticket and straight away my luggage was taken and we proceeded to check in which went smoothly. Our Cabin was an outside cabin with window. The cabin was spotless and had a complementary bottle of Prosecco and Macarons inside with MSC Slippers and Bathrobes. The Cabin attendant who name is Mansel was from Saint Vincent. Mansel was most polite and friendly and always did an excellent job in maintaining the Cabin. On this occasion we decide we would not avail of the dining room experience as the menu is similar on all MSC ships so it was the Buffet Restaurant we frequented for all meals. The buffet restaurant had a good choice of food, carvery and desserts. The problem was the food was never hot only warm and sometimes cold. I did notice that a far better choice of food was available during lunch compare to the dinner menu. The food on the Liricia was of a higher standard compare to other MSC Ships. On several occasions the Coffee from the dispensers was cold or empty and at times no cups or mugs were available in the restaurant. The Theatre which did not require a reservation the standard of entertainment was high so we frequented the theatre every night. We found fault with one show which we left after 10 minutes. On one occasions on entering the theatre we notice people were holding whole rows of seats for friend. I made a complaint to Customer serviced who said this is not allowed and the following night there was MSC staff policing the theatre. One night the Captain and offers came to the stage to thank guests for supporting MSC and wishing us all safe journeys home. One the 6th night we received an invitation to a Welcome back Voyagers club party. This was not the first time I had attended such a party but I can definitely say this was the best. Live music was played with complementary drinks and tapas available. Officers made it their business to mingle with the guests, overall a very pleasant enjoyable experience. The Captain was available for photo’s and always had a pleasant simile. MSC offered a pay for shuttle bus to the centre of Cagliari which I considered was overpriced. The port had a free shuttle bus to the port entrance with the City within walking distance. Civitavecchia Rome. There was a free shuttle bus service from the ship to the port entrance. At the port entrance local travel companies were offering day drips to Rome at a fraction of the MSC excursion cost. Livorno again there was a paid shuttle bus on offer from MSC to the centre and a free shuttle bus to the port entrance. Livorno is 15 minutes walk from the port. Palma de Mallorca on offer from MSC was a paid shuttle bus to the Centre. If you walk 5 minutes from the Ship public transport is available to the Centre and tickets cost €3 single journey. Payment can be made on board the bus with cash of from vending machines using a credit card. I considered all MSC Shuttle buses to be over priced when for the adventurous a cheaper option was always available. Disembarkation day was slightly disastrous as no luggage was available for pick up after disembarkation. We were told wait in a waiting room until the luggage arrive. The room became over populated as more and more people disembarked. Eventually when the luggage arrived there was a free for all and total chaos with no organisation. Overall MSC Lirica was well organised the staff were well trained and friendly with a smiling Captain and a good variety of food on offer. As my Wife said “A happy Captain a happy crew”.

After being on several much newer MSC ships, I could not resist the promotion. I am pleasantly surprised. Lirica is an old ship and in need of a refurbishment. No Swarovski staircases or all the glitter and glamour. It has it's charm and it's a bit 'old school'. Embarkation was done in 10 minutes, cabin ready once we got on board at 11. Friendly staff all over the place. The food is remarkably tasty in both the restaurant and buffet. We were on the Virtuosa in the Yacht Club in November but regarding the food, Lirica is the winner. Some of the less positive points are the huge amount of young Italians who are having the time of their lives. The buffet is too small for 2000 guests. So we tried to avoid the peak hours. Spa and gym are very small but also here, we avoided peak hours. Would book this ship again.
