Ship Reviews

We really enjoyed this ‘extra’ cruise we booked at the last minute. We wanted a bit of rest and sunshine and that’s what we got. We managed to avoid storm Therese and just saw lightening disappearing over the sea as we arrived by taxi the night before the cruise on the way from Tenerife South airport. From then on we had reasonable and sometimes even sunny weather and although some said there was a bit of rocking on the way to Madeira, we didn’t feel it. The food in the main restaurant, L’Epoche, was fabulous and we didn’t have one bad dish. We had top notch service from Waiter- Satriya from Indonesia. We were on ‘anytime dining’ and requested we had him each time and mostly this was possible. The entertainment was good too. We stayed on the ship a lot and joined in the daily quizzes and music quizzes too and enjoyed them and even won a couple of times. The musicians were also skilled and one in particular made our cruise. It was singer Jayson from the Philippines who mostly sang songs in English that were well known in U.K. While we were there I noticed he sang an Irish song for a couple who had requested it. he said he had learned it especially and they sang along with others in delight. This prompted us to ask for a request and as he didn’t know music by Paolo Nutini, Jayson spent every day learning one especially for me! He sang it to us on our last night and it finished our cruise off in style. We sang along and danced and felt so special. I hope to see him on Virtuosa or any of the ships that come to Southampton. He would go down well in the English pub onboard. The theatre productions were also good and entertaining. Our balcony cabin on the 11th deck was fine. It was kept clean and tidy by our excellent steward Yashil. He had a knack of never getting in our way but cleaning the room around our lazy routines! We both had treatments in the spa. My husband had a massage with Alma and enjoyed it and I loved my manicure and pedicure with the lovely therapist, Thandiwe. Thandiwe has very good people skills and was very particular and skilled. The only two negatives were in the Wine bar music by Roberto was often too loud- could hear it from atrium spoiling music there from Aubrey. Also, the smell of stale smoke outside the Cigar lounge and the casino drifted all away across to other side of the ship. This is just horrid if you don’t smoke. We came away well rested and very happy with the ship, its staff and the itinerary. We would happily go on the ship again even though it is older and smaller than we are used to. Next cruise in May is on Virtuosa which is larger and newer but we also have Magnifica booked in July which is similar to Musica. We love what MSC offers and enjoy all the variety classes of ships.

Just back from a great week on MSC Musica. Our itinerary covered the Canary Islands and Madeira. Our cabin was fine . It was an interior cabin. It was basic but met our needs. It was a bit tired but very clean. The food was good overall. The buffet food was a bit underwhelming at times however we had no issues in the main dining room for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The service was top notch, all very lovely people who tried their best. The entertainment was ok, we didn’t like it every night but that’s down to own our tastes and there was a wide demographic onboard so I think the variety suited everyone. There were 2 shows a night , a repeat of the same one. This was ok considering there was probably 60% capacity at each one. Other than the theatre shows, entertainment took the form of singing groups in various lounges doing different themes along with the entertainment team hosting themed parties with involvement from the theatre dancers etc No issues with embarking or disembarking, all smooth and efficient. Pool deck was busy but still it was possible to find a sun lounger away from the pool area which we preferred as it quite loud at the pool due to music and games We felt it was exceptional value for money. Factoring in we availed of fly & cruise so our price included flights and transfers along with drinks package, it really was incredibly cheap however the experience didn’t feel cheap

Room Details: Musica is an older ship. It is in fairly good shape, but don’t expect too much. We were on deck 12 and near the front of the ship. We had a balcony room. As we walked down the long hall towards the rear of the ship, we would always pass a section that smelled like sewer gas. We were glad our room was not in that area. With our room being one level down from one of the main areas, we were woken almost every night between 4:00 and 5:00 am to the sound of chairs and tables being dragged across the floor. We learned later on that this was the daytime crew, preparing for service. Nonetheless, it was frustrating. The temp control worked well in our room. The space was utilized efficiently, so suitcases could be unpacked and stored away, with enough closet and drawer space for all of our belongings. Dining & Cuisine: Keep in mind that I am very picky about the quality of food. The breakfast buffet has mainly the same selections each day. We had the “Plus” package so we could get fresh orange juice, coffee and bottled water. The juice and fresh coffee were good. During the lunch buffet, there was always some freshly carved meat. Beef was included one of those days and it was acceptable. When the selection was pork or turkey, it was dry. The pork or poultry in the buffet was almost always dry. I was hoping for good pizza, because the ship sails out of Italy, after all. Although they are making it from scratch, it was bland and didn’t satisfy me, so day one was the only time I ate it. Most of the time, the cocktails that were made were pretty good. Each night, I ate in the formal dining room. The food there was better than the buffet food, but that was to be expected. It wasn’t always up to my standards, but I have high standards. Entertainment & Activities: I normally don’t engage in most activities on cruise ships and sometimes seek out quiet areas of the ship to relax and have dialog with the people I am cruising with. On this ship, it was hard to find quiet areas. The musicians on the ship were quite talented. Demographics & Atmosphere: Travelers on this ship were mainly older, but there were also some babies and toddlers and always seemed to be near me wherever I sat down, letting out ear piercing shrieks. When the buffets were full, and seating very limited, people got pretty rude. Actually, there was quite a bit of rude behavior in general, at the buffets. I am referring to the passengers and not the staff. Service & Staff: This is where this cruise line shines. Almost every crew member I encountered was very helpful and polite. I even made a few new friends! I am adding a picture of four badges of crew members I want to give special recognition to, for making the cruise much more enjoyable. I hope the cruise line recognizes them for their outstanding customer service. Value for Money: Considering the amount spent on this 11-day, 10-night cruise, I believe it was worth it. When you are not spending top dollar on a cruise ship, you really can’t expect everything to be high-end. For this reason mainly, I rate this experience a 7 out of 10.
