Ship Reviews

This was my second time cruising and I had a wonderful time. It had a bumpy start weather-wise, so we missed the first port, but I trust that they had our safety and best interests in mind. The food was delicious, the arcade and pools were fun, and there were plenty of bars where I could try new drinks. There were a wide range of activities and events where we got to dance, play games, and more. The best part of this experience, however, was the support we got from the staff! They were so kind and efficient- they made this whole experience what it was! Unfortunately, we had issues with the mobile app and communication. I was unable to use the app without wifi, which meant I could not talk to my family without also getting updates from social media, work, and school- three things I wanted to avoid while cruising. There were also some technical difficulties that meant my sister could not communicate with us at all, and trying to save our minutes from the free wifi package was stressful. We got it worked out with the help of guest services, but the previous cruise I went on had an app that allowed for easy communication with or without wifi- I can't help wishing Norwegian had the same. The destinations were beautiful, as expected! I loved St. Thomas, and wish I had done more at Tortola. I do not like private islands, but I wish I could have learned more about Great Stirrup Cay while I was there. We looked it up later and learned so many cool things about its history that would have been much cooler to learn in person! It's too bad that it's just a party island now. Still, as I said before, I had a wonderful time on this cruise. We got back home this evening, ready to be home but so satisfied with the trip. Despite the rocky start, the Epic team pivoted and we did, too! Thank you, Deprender, Maricar, Chad, I Wayan, Oscar, Edward, and Olivia! You are some of the dozens of people we met on this cruise, and the hundreds of people who worked hard to keep Epic an epic experience!

EPIC – 12/7/24-12/14/24 (Eastern Caribbean) We’ve cruised about 25 cruises and this was our 2nd time on NCL. After reading bad reviews I was worried but we really had a great time. We were pleasantly surprised with the cruise on the EPIC. I would sail on this ship again (although there was an issue with excursion reimbursement which I’m not happy with NCL about – see below) Pre-cruise: Our group stayed at the Radisson at the Port. We’ve stayed here before and would definitely recommend it. We booked the fly, stay & cruise package and it was great. Shuttle was included and drivers were awesome. All the staff were great. Ate dinner at Fish Lips – again we’ve done this before and had a great meal and drinks. Embarkation: Port Canaveral knows what they are doing. Had first boarding group (11:00 I think) and had no wait at all. Staff was friendly and very welcoming. Bars: Due to the popularity of the free drink package, it was time consuming to get a drink. Because the bartenders are so busy, I did miss the kidding around we’ve had on other ships. But staff were very professional and accommodating. Someone suggested previously to get two at a time – definitely good advice. Room: We had a balcony room. Very large balcony which we loved. Drum roll please….now on to the layout of the room. Gotta say it… I really liked it. Now in fairness, if I was traveling with anyone other than my husband I wouldn’t like it as much. But I really liked having the toilet, shower and sink separate. I know most people hate it but I guess I’m strange for liking it. Room steward was great. Only down side was the room is extremely narrow –can’t count the million times my husband and I bumped into each other lol. On the plus side, it’s amazing how much storage area is available. I overpacked and still didn’t fill up ½ of the storage room. Entertainment: We didn’t book anything in advance and didn’t see the larger shows. This cruise was really just an escape with friends. We did go see some of the musical acts but I have to say holding them in the smaller venues really made you get there an hour early to get a seat. Really enjoyed the Dueling Piano a couple of nights. Very entertaining and the crowds were having a ball. Food: Food was outstanding. We did both specialty restaurants at the Frech Bistro and loved it—food and staff were amazing. We went to the dining room a bunch of times (dinner and breakfast). We had a party of 6 and sometimes had to wait 10 minutes or so for dinner but that wasn’t a problem. Staff was very nice. Didn’t eat in the buffet much but when we did food was really good. Ice Bar: Yup…it’s definitely a one and done thing but so much fun. Again, our party of 6 had a great time (Jonathan the bartender was a hoot). Guy that signs you up isn’t very friendly so don’t let that deter you. Ports of Call: St. Thomas –- our group took a taxi to Meghans’ Bay. Very crowded since our ship came in late in the day, but beautiful day hanging out in the ocean. You can rent loungers for $20 but we didn’t since our time was so short there. Dominican Republic—just stayed in the secure port area (just felt uncomfortable leaving the port). Unfortunately it was raining so we just found a bar with a roof and enjoyed people watching. Tortola—took a taxi to a beach (can’t remember the name). Got loungers and umbrellas free as long as you use the bar which we did – MANY times lol. Really enjoyed our time there. Taxi driver was awesome. Stirrup Cay—I read some funny reviews that people questioned if there is even an island because it gets cancelled a lot. We booked a cabana and were so looking forward to it. Well guess what…it got cancelled due to weather (tender port) – which I understand because the weather wasn’t good. BUT here’s where I’m furious with NCL. A letter was sent around notifying passengers that had excursions that you would get a refund. When I checked our charges it did in fact show a credit. Naively I assumed the amount would be credited to my credit card. WRONG! After being home a few days, I contacted NCL. Spoke with two different reps (very nice but couldn’t help) and then one apologized but said unfortunately it was MY responsibility to file a claim to get the refund. So then I had to fill out all the paperwork, got an email asking me what the excursion was that got cancelled (hello? Don’t you have that on record???). Then was told it could take 6-8 weeks to get a refund since I had pre-paid (yes...you took my money immediately, then NCL cancels the excursion and then I have to WAIT to get MY money back). That is HORRIBLE NCL! Just WRONG! We had a great trip but this really soured me on NCL. We've cruised over 25 times on all different lines and this came as a shock to me. I'm really sad how this played out on this otherwise wonderful trip. Disembarkation: Again, Port Canaveral has it down to a science and NCL did a great job as well. We had one of the last colors called and were still off the ship by 8:30. Shuttle to go back to the Radisson was in the assigned area and drivers again were awesome. While the EPIC is an older ship, I think she looked pretty good. Cleaning staff did an outstanding job of picking up after folks, which I’m sure isn’t easy. Yes common areas are small and get very crowded. And bars are extremely busy. But knowing that before boarding was helpful. Looking forward to our next cruise on RCI in two weeks. Might go back to NCI … just not right away.

I agree with some other reviews -- the ship is quirky --- when you walk in the balcony room there is a shower on one side and a toilet on the other, both behind frosted glass doors with a privacy curtain separating from the bedroom area. The sink is IN the bedroom area. So, you watch TV while your partner brushes teeth and shaves? Really weird. The room is small and includes a curved couch that is not useful and takes up too much space. There is lots of storage space. The bed and pillows were very comfortable. Another quirk -- the elevators will go to deck 6 and then you have to walk to 5 or take an escalator to get to Taste restaurant or to the help and excursion desks. Meanwhile, you are walking through cigarette smelly casino. And yes, the casino takes up too much space. HOWEVER, we had a really nice time and there was a lot to enjoy. The food at Taste and Manhattan was very good and so much better than dealing with the buffet. The specialty restaurants we visited were La Cucina and Le Bistro. The food was great as was the service and the ambiance. We went to the buffet once for breakfast (Taste all the other times) and once for lunch (Taste all the other times.) The food was adequate there but we mainly ate salads at lunch and eggs for breakfast. It was a bit hard to find a table so we shared with others, inviting ourselves to join people. The pool bar was always crowded with people waiting to be served. Better to ask one of the waiters for a drink. Other bars were busy, too, but I am not a drinker so it didn't much matter. We had no trouble finding places to sit on the deck. H2O is an adult only area with a big screen that played sports games. It has its own pool. It was a bit close to the exhaust of the ship so we chose to sit elsewhere. I was happy there wasn't loud music and people on microphones organizing pool games all day in the main pool area. We paid $349 each for the thermal spa that has nice locker rooms, robes, steam and sauna in the lockerrooms and the same in the communal area. Nice lounge chairs for reading and relaxing. There is a warm pool in there with waterfall-type things coming down to run on sore muscles. We got them to turn up the hot tub as it wasn't warm enough. It's supposed to be a quiet area but many of us had to ask the managers to have people quiet down. Even after being asked, people ignored the request. That was annoying. There is a nice covered balcony area with chairs and lounges. You can look out the back of the ship from that location. We also each had a massage. Wait for deals. One day they offered 75 minutes for $199 and it was much higher if you booked on day one for a future massage. 20% gratuity is automatic. Needless to say, the biggest part of our bill was thermal spa x 2 and massage x 2. Personally, I thought the cost of the thermal spa was high but my husband thought it was great and worth it. The excursions were fine -- it rained in the Dominican Republic. We had a beach day. They let us cancel and get a refund. We went snorkeling in St. Thomas and ended at Honeymoon Beach which was nice. Not a lot of fish... the reefs seem kind of dead.. But we did see several turtle and a huge one swam right under me. He had to be three feet long and a bit less in width. We did the Beach Break in Tortola and that was fantastic, 4 hours on a lovely beach. Bring money -- it's $10 for the beach lounge, more if you get an umbrella. Prices for drinks were reasonable. The trip over and back was fun with very steep incline on the way there and the opposite on the way back. Burn the Floor show was FANTASTIC! The dancers are so talented. Be sure to see that. The Epic Beatles were also fantastic! They were great musicians -- the "George" looked like George, the others not so much, but that was fine. The music was great. Especially fantastic was Sgt Pepper night with their costumes matching the Beatles' costumes and the music fantastic. All in all, it was a very fun trip. The ship is not super fancy but is updated and clean. Great food, great entertainment (though I wish they would bring back the Broadway shows) and great service.
