Ship Reviews

We had a wonderful time on the Breakaway. I’m baffled by all the horrible reviews. They are about to go into drydock in mid-February and I assume it will only improve the experience. But, I want to reassure anyone who may be feeling worried. No, it wasn't our best cruise, but it was very good. Most of our meals were great with a few misses but they are so accommodating and will bring another item if asked. We cruised on the Breakaway about 8 years ago and loved O'Sheehans on that prior cruise. Not so much this time, it was inconsistent, and service was spotty. The American Diner was better and our favorite place to visit on port days when we came back onboard and didn't want to hustle at the buffet. The burgers there were better, too. We absolutely loved Burn the Floor and would recommend also attending their extra dinner shows that happen in the Manhattan Room. Speaking of The Manhattan Room, it was our favorite main dining room. Next would be Taste. We went to Taste/Savor for breakfast and lunch too when we could. There are some daily options that are fun to try and among our favorites this cruise. We prefer cruises with an assigned dinner table and time. I would caution anyone who is traveling with a large group to be prepared for longer waits. I would not attempt to cruise the Breakaway with more than 4 people if you want to eat meals together. For specialty dining, we went to La Cucina. I was not impressed with my Fra Diavolo but my husband said his lamb shank was delicious. Our other specialty dining was Teppanyaki. This was our favorite meal and we would highly recommend it for fans of Japanese steakhouse dining. The desserts across all the dining venues were average but one standout was the Warm Chocolate Lava Cake. We wish they offered it every day! When it comes to entertainment, there are more options and shows on the larger ships but there are also larger prices on those ships. Syd Norman’s was terrific but as other reviews point out they have very limited seating. One night we got seats (in line about 45 minutes before the show) another we stood. Our cabin was okay. Another reviewer urged everyone to request a mattress topper and I’m glad I did via the NCL website chat about two weeks before the cruise. I guess they may make improvements when the ship is in drydock. Our room was good overall. We always had lots of clean towels and it was refreshed every day. We had a balcony room on the deck 8. The shuffleboard area was just a deck below us and it made for a less than tranquil balcony experience. But, it was convenient to be on the 8th deck because many public areas are on that deck or deck 6 and 7. Overall, great value for our 9 days and kudos to the hardworking crew.

NCL is still my favorite. Their staff are absolutely amazing. Awesome cruise director. Fantastic staff all over the ship. Only one bartender (seemed like he was a manager) in the theater wasn't friendly. Not bad for a 9 day cruise to only find 1 person. Cabin attendant was amazing. The ship was showing signs of age but it went to dry dock right after our trip so I'm sure that will be resolved. It is a great ship though, albeit small balconies. The food was great....of course better in the specialty restaurants. The Noodle place was amazing, and free. Service in all of the dining places was amazing. Main dining rooms were all great and the staff couldn't be more attentive and helpful. On sea days, trying to find a lounge chair on any of the upper decks was impossible after 9AM. Finally on the last day of the cruise, they started red tagging the chairs with times. If it was over 30 minutes, we just took them. The NCL beach excursions were extremely disappointing. (As a side note, a cruise I took on Encore last year, had an equally disappointing beach excursion in St Thomas). I was very much looking forward to Barbados and going to a beach, which was my favorite island until now. I got the Copacabana beach day excursion. The place was in a very run down area. The beach was too small for the number of ships that were in port that day. The "beach club" was a small room with 6 chairs. They claim there's a shower, but it wasn't indoors, so not sure where that was. They claimed there were changing facilities....well that ended up being 2 toilet stalls with no counter or hooks to place your belongings. It was either on the toilet or on the floor. The staff there weren't that friendly and when someone that was on our bus didn't want to sit on the beach where we were told we had to sit, they got combative with her. The woman just ignored them and I think they just gave up. Not customer service friendly at all. We were jammed on the beach like sardines and it wasn't much better in the water. I think there were 4 ships in port that day. But NCL should know that information when they are selling excursions. After that terrible day, we were looking forward to the afternoon beach break in Antigua. We went to the zone where our tickets said to meet. They took our tickets, counted us off about 9 times, put wrist bands on us and off we went. After an hour in a very uncomfortable shuttle bus, we began wondering how far it was to the beach. Then we started to suspect that we were on the wrong excursion. After 1.5 hours we stopped and were given 15 minutes to use the bathroom. We went up to the woman who was our "tour guide" and said we aren't going to the beach, are we? She said no, you're on a 3 hour tour of Antigua. Well needless to say, there were 4 of us in bathing suits that were not happy at all that day. After these disappointments, I am no longer going to purchase NCL excursions. I will be researching and buying my own excursions, based on reviews and info received on cruise critic. I did do a tour of San Juan through NCL and that was a great tour. Great tour guide and nice comfortable transportation. In spite of the excursion problems, I am still all in on NCL. Love this cruise line and its amazing staff. Looking forward to my next one.

We had a good time on the Breakaway last week. Even though it's on it's way to dry dock right now, and you can tell it needs it, the ship was clean, the staff was phenomenal, the food was great. The Ice Bar is a must do, that is so much fun! Syd Norman's Pour House has the best band, best shows, best atmosphere and a fabulous bartender! We ate at two specialty dining restaurants. Le Bistro is one of the best dining experiences I've ever had, Cagney's was also excellent. The comedy acts were mediocre, we tried to watch two and didn't finish either show. Trivia was fun, so called "Dueling Pianos" was just two average musicians taking turns with songs. We had more fun with the Karaoke. The embarkation process was okay. Fairly smooth getting through the gate, but then a lengthy wait to get on the ship, with insufficient rest room space in the terminal. LONG line for the ladies room. Disembarking at ports was horrible. Totally unorganized and confusing. I am older, with health and mobility issues, and have to use a cane for balance at times. Explain to me why we had to report to the theatre, take a seat, wait for each excursion to be called, when they called the first two, then let all six other groups go at once? So with a cane, I had to walk down the awkward steps of the theatre, to then go through a maze and walk down another flight of steps? Just to end up right next to the elevator they wouldn't let me take down???? For final disembarking, we were told our group would be called at 9am. So we planned our morning, and our breakfast, on that time. Only to be called at 8:15! My husband and I were on opposite ends of the ship, on different floors. It was pure luck that we met up before having to get off the ship. We were rushed off only to have to stand and wait for over an hour in the Miami heat. I love cruising, but I'm not sure I'll use Norwegian again.
