Ship Reviews

Some good news, some bad news on this one. Overall, a consistent delivery of a cruise. Didn't mind missing Costa Maya. Roatan has plenty to do. Ship goes need some continuing maintenance though which is concerning. Food at dining rooms was good, Horizon Court is uninspiring at best and beverage service was non existent. We had to get our own beverages anytime we were there. Hard to find things there also. Asked numerous times for cheese and was told they only had a few kinds, then upon leaving found a big bread and cheese area. Our room was towards aft and had plenty of vibration noises off and on during the cruise. We are Elite and the now 3 day lead time for laundry is useless! Why bother. You'll barely get it back before the end of the cruise. Elite lounge was pretty sad too. A far cry from what it used to be. Big thing was, the last day we decided to have breakfast on our at sea day on the balcony and enjoy peace and quiet at sea. Nope ..they sent a notice that they were cleaning the balconies from 8-12 that morning, to remove all your items and close your drapes! Seriously, on the last at sea day!!?? Very suspicious to us until at disembarkation, it was announced the US health department came on the ship. And, this was announced twice. Regal already had been inspected with a passing grade in October so probably not a random inspection. Hmm.....deep cleaning....US health comes on? What's up here? Nothing more was said. Lines getting on the ship were pretty seriously long. Not sure if Galveston isn't set up the best since it's still new for Princess. Seldom see 100s of cruisers lined up like that in FLL unless something has been screwed up.

We took this cruise because we saw a good deal on a minisuite (large balcony cabin with bathtub). And we love the ports of Cozumel and Roatan. Also, Galveston seemed like a closer port with a shorter flight time from our home city. Regal Princess is still a lovely ship. We loved the extra space provided by a minisuite cabin. The balcony was small, but adequate. The port of Galveston was not a good embarkation, though. We arrived at 11:45 and did not board until 1:15. I don't know how old people did this. We heard from others that you need to board as early as you are allowed, because once the bus shuttles start arriving from the airports in Houston, the line swells by the hundreds. Next time I try the port of Galveston, I will definitely leave my lodgings promptly and get over to the ship. And trying to find a ride back to the airport was another long wait. Think carefully about the possibility of booking the Princess bus shuttle so you can leave more promptly. We managed to get an Uber that someone had cancelled. We should have booked the main dining room for a late seating every night at 7:30. I had been concerned that that late of a dining time would make us miss the shows, but it would have been fine. Trying to get reservations at the Allegro dining room became the challenge for my nephew-in-law, and after a couple of days he managed to get us the same table every night at 7:15. This allowed us to get to know our waiter, and he, us. He then took very good care of my niece with her vegan diet restrictions. Even on formal night, no lobster was served. That was disappointing. But we quite enjoyed our food choices. My niece had been impressed with the food on Norwegian Escape earlier that year, but said that the Regal Princess food was even better. I even managed to order food to the room with my medallion app. What an easy way to get a latte! We had the Princess Plus package, and we all enjoyed the wi-fi. included gratuities, and the beverages. The coffee at the International Cafe pleased all of us, and was definitely better than the room service coffee for breakfast. My husband and I both chose the old fashioned as our drink, and it was unfailingly good. Maybe I should have tried other drinks, too, but I stuck to a good thing. I don't think that Princess monitored the dress code very well in the Allegro dining room. This bothers me since I want dinner to be something special. Cheap attire cheapens the experience for the rest of us. Azamara is a cruise line that actually has a dress code that means what they say. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of Azamara cruises in the Caribbean. Because of rough seas, our Costa Maya stop was cancelled. This left us with only two ports to visit, but we still had a great time. Even our millenials seemed content with that much ship time, though it probably helped that they booked two excellent massages. We all had different massage therapists, and all four were excellent. Also, we had late departure times for all the ports, so we had plenty of time to explore when we did get ashore. Later departure times allow me to not sweat the possibility of missing the boat. It is a definite factor in which cruises I choose. Something different on this voyage on Princess was the opportunity to purchase fresh flowers at a flower stand near guest services. I loved having fresh flowers in my stateroom! I only wished that I had known that they were available earlier in my cruise so I could have enjoyed them the entire time at sea. I made sure to order some for another niece for her subsequent trip on Regal Princess the next week, and I ordered some for my brother on his upcoming voyage for New Year's. This was my eighth cruise with Princess, and she is still solid value for the money. I say that after sailing on a total of nine cruise lines. I would happily book another cruise with Princess for another family vacation with more of my adult kids and grandchildren.

Experienced cruiser here. Been on many cruise lines -- Royal Carribean, NCL, Carnival, Holland America and Silverseas. Most often we use Royal Carribean -- but this time we shifted to Princess because the price was $500/person lower. Rather than give a recap of the entire cruise itself, I thought I would share the difference between Princess and Royal. SHIP - Slight edge to Royal. We like the smaller sized Royal ships ideally, because the crowds are better. The Princess ship is similar to a smaller Royal ship. Not as much to do -- but we don't want much to do. If I have teenage kids or are particularly active, would definitely go RCL just to keep them busy. The layout of the Princess ship was not quite right. Lots of dead ends and some decks didn't go all the way through - we found ourselves having to go up and down stairs to get somewhere on the same deck. We did miss the specialty bars that Royal has, particularly the British pubs. My wife missed the Mango daiquiris as well. ROOMS - Advantage Royal. We usually do a standard balcony. Square footage was the same, but the room felt smaller. Princess has a bigger closet area than Royal, but no sofa. The balcony itself was laughably small -- you needed to turn the chairs sideways to sit in them. FOOD - Big advantage to Royal. The food on Princess was lackluster at best. An even bigger issue is that even though we 6:20PM dinner reservations for each night, we had to check in and got a different waiter each time. One night we had to wait 30+ minutes for a table. If you do go on Princess, we definitely would suggest doing traditional timing. CASINO - Advantage Princess. Craps had x2 odds and Black Jack x1.5. Received a bounce back and a free massage from my winning gambling. TECH- Advantage Princess. The big advantage here is the RFID tags. It opens you door just by proximity and also can be configured so you can find out where your shipmates are. Very, very handy. PORT - Both lines go to the same ports. I really wish one of the cruise lines would come up with a different itinerary out of Galveston. STRONGLY recommend cavetubingrus.com with David in Belize... I've been tubing about 6 times and it never gets old! SERVICE - Slight edge Royal. The service on Princess was great, but they had less bar staff per person than Royal. Not a huge deal, but will give a slight edge to Royal. EXTRAS - PICK 'EM (only means something if you use it) Princess had a few areas on the pool deck where you could pay more for a private experience. I didn't use it, but could definitely see the merit in having a quieter deck. Princess has a plus package -- for $60/day, you get drinks, internet and tips -- plus a few other minor benefits. I usually don't get the drink package, but for the price it made sense to. It was nice not having to think about it. All things said, the food on Princess was disappointing, but the rest of it was not that unlike Royal Carribean. If the price was the same I would go Royal, but with the price difference offered I would definitely chose Princess again.
