I'd give this cruise, overall, a 3 1/2 if I could - by comparison to our several cruises with Celebrity, there were a few things they did better, but overall we were more impressed with Celebrity. Starting with what we consider the most important part of a cruise experience, the food and drink: The MDR food was, for the most part, good but not *great*, and with just slightly less overall *creativity* (also slightly less flavor) than Celebrity's. One exception, we agreed - they consistently nailed any and all shellfish (scallops, shrimp, lobster, crab). Their pasta was, overall, average at best, and I was amused some of the appetizers just boiled down to "some fruit in a glass". Still, nothing was *bad*, other than a couple of the wines - overall, pretty average wines, and much less selection by the glass, compared to the much more and better wines on Celebrity - thought it was weird, half the wines for the glass don't even list the winery, just the varietal and price. (Though funny enough, both lines appear to equally not be able to make good cocktails at their respective MDRs. Once ordered a whiskey cocktail and just got a glass of whiskey on a Celebrity cruise... that just happened on this cruise, too.) Other than that, service was decent, mostly pretty fast, other than the first night - sometimes a little *too* fast even. They did forget an appetizer at lunch once, but it's not like we were lacking in food everywhere The buffet... actually overall, at least for lunch, was better than Celebrity's. Their breakfast was pretty solid for the most part, other than they *completely* don't know how to make a savory crepe (step one, actually melt the cheese), and I missed having decent eggs benedict. But decent eggs benedict were also about the *only* thing Celebrity's buffet did right, so I give this one the win. (Though I was sad once when the time changed and I wanted some late night pizza, that their buffet, and thus the only place to get real pizza, closed surprisingly early at night.) The "coffee shop" - Celebrity definitely made better espresso and espresso drinks. (Celebrity also won by having a full bar menu of caffeinated cocktails, but they also just had higher quality tasting coffee.) On the other hand, while Celebrity's complimentary pastries were great, they didn't have any really good grab and go sandwiches. Princess's dessert pastries were also solid, but they had a much better small sandwiches to go with your drink menu. I ended up eating there as much as at the buffet for breakfast/snacks. We also tried each of the two "casual dining" options, as they were included in our package. The sushi lunch was... ok for free, but I wouldn't have wanted to pay $15 for it. Their unagi (that we paid extra to try) was actually terrible - rubbery, overcooked, and fairly flavorless. The Italian place, by contrast, was solid enough. Though their appetizers weren't terribly interesting (your choice of soup or two different antipasto plates), and the pizza was definitely freshly baked and pretty good, but we actually both agreed the buffet's pizza was better, the pasta was the only good pasta on the ship (it was actually very good), and the tiramisu... was probably actually the best tiramisu I've had. Extremely good tiramisu. (Though as we got there right during the lunch rush, they were *very* slow to get pizzas out. Wasn't entirely worth the wait, but would arguably have been worth the $15, other than that there's no shortage of good, included food.) Just wish, again, they'd had more interesting wines. (Funny enough, even the specifically wine bar, still didn't have that many more interesting wines by the glass than the MDR.) We only tried one upcharge dinner - we always like to compare the steakhouses on cruise ships. Funny enough, the appetizers there absolutely shined (though unfortunately, I can confirm that while the menu itself only states that entrees at the steakhouse only include one per reservation, that is in fact also true of appetizers. I didn't even eat all my steak, but I would've loved a couple more appetizers). The (extremely rich) chocolate cake was also a winner, other than I didn't have room for more than a quarter of it (funny enough, I ate the rest of the chocolate cake for breakfast one day, and the rest of the steak with breakfast a couple days later.) The steak itself, though - it was a solid steak, but we agreed, the quality of the steak here was about on par with the quality of the steak in Celebrity's MDR (which had very good steak - their equivalent steakhouse, thus, was also one cut above this one.) Was great steak still, but probably wouldn't pay the extra $45 pp again. Overall, with the *exception* of Good Spirits, their "craft" cocktail bar, their bartenders were... variable in quality, let's say. Some of them were great, some of them I had to help them find some of their bottles, and got pretty unbalanced results. Many of their drinks are clearly made with over-sugary, artificial drink mixes. And my wife kept ordering one specific mocktail (Strawberries on Fire), which was served in 3 different types of glasses, and ranged from delicious, to way too spicy, to fairly flavorless, to mostly sugar-water, depending where she ordered it from. Would also have been nice if they'd had real cocktail cherries instead of the fake kiddie kind, and most of their bartenders didn't properly skewer the olives in martinis or bloody marys, so they just dropped to the bottom of the glass (also: very mediocre olives.) But they did win over Celebrity in terms of having more quality spirits - no peated scotch, sadly, but a solid range of package-included single malts generally, my favorite bourbon (Buffalo Trace), my favorite gin (St George), and at least on this cruise (being to Mexico), even a couple mezcals and a sotol (Celebrity totally lacked in mezcal, and as it turns out, sotol makes a *great* bloody mary). Anyway, the drinks at the one craft cocktail bar, Good Spirits, were *excellent* (that's where they put their best bartenders, clearly). They only serve cocktails from the craft menu from 5-10 for some reason, but over the course of the trip, I tried all of them, and they were all great. The rest of the time, I still tried to get drinks from that bar preferentially, even if I was limited to classics and drinks off the regular menu, because I knew they'd make them well (except for Good Spirits, the rest of the ship all uses the same list of cocktails, just with different theming on their otherwise identical menus.) Apart from food and drink, I mainly just use a cruise as a moving hotel, so I can't really comment about the shows (they looked kitschy, as I would expect from a cruise line). I can definitely comment about the room, though - overall, it was designed a bit better than the similar room we were in last time with Celebrity, felt a little more spacious (to be fair, it was the more spacious flavor of balcony cabin, but it just felt like everything was in a slightly more convenient location.) Everything except the bathroom area, which made up for it by being extremely cramped, with a rather inconvenient shower that kept getting water on the floor of the bathroom, which also had no drainage, and a rather claustrophobic, uncomfortable toilet area. I absolutely loved how much better their blackout curtains were than Celebrity's (we really could've used that in Alaska!), but the mattress, unfortunately, was just one step better than a rock in terms of hardness. AC worked well enough, but could've gone a *little* colder. I will also comment - their wifi was a bit clunky, in that it would periodically time out and make you manually reconnect, but Celebrity's wifi was *super* buggy and laggy all the time, while Princess's worked well enough pretty much all the time, until it didn't out of nowhere, and made you sign back in. Still a definite improvement. I did also love the one truly unique thing about the Princess experience, that as long as you were both on the ship, you could see exactly where your companion was at any time, which came in handy for tracking each other down at the buffet, seeing if the other one was still in the room or had left, etc. We did also try ordering food/drink through it, but it was less convenient than it seemed, as they couldn't communicate if they were out of something and thus just brought whatever they thought would be similar, and sometimes it'd take 3 minutes to arrive, other times it'd take 45+.
Love the princess cruise line. Been on Discovery three times, Emerald one time, and now Majestic, one time. Majestic was our least favorite. CONS, No. 1: We like the games, so spent some time in the Princess Live theater. However, there are no tables or cup holders, yet they serve drinks. You must hold your drink or bottle of water, or place it on the floor. No. 2: the Hollywood Conservatory was overrun with children and sleeping adults utilizing the various cabanas, large round chairs with mattress style pads. Due to the smaller area, you were right on top of each other. Unfortunately, it has some of the best views on the ship, but passengers stake out their area and keep it for most of the day. No. 3: We have never had so many balcony cabins (deck 9 aft), sliding doors open, with people yelling, cheering, laughing and literally screaming until very late in the night. They had no regard for their fellow passengers that may be sleeping. No. 4: the MDR dinners were not up to previous standards. Example "Yankee pot roast" was like chunky beef and veg. soup, poured over mashed potatoes. The meat chunks the size of a dime. The crab cakes ended up being served as crab quiche. The mahi mahi was like leather with no flavor, and the surf and turf on the last sea day was removed and replaced with awful prime rib. We have always enjoyed the MDR, but this time the changes were really noticeable. No 5: our medallions did not work after day one. Spent two days and multiple phone calls, talked to the Ocean Medallion Officer, and they tried to no avail. Evidently it had to do with the unit on the wall, next to the door. We just lived with it. PROS: Excellent service from all employees. Ran out of kleenex after two days, so gave us extra rolls of toilet paper. Always had our ice bucket stocked and clean towels and wine glasses. The waiters and assistants were excellent in the dinner MDR. We love having the same waiter, table and dining time. Regarding some of the "cons", they could have applied to other ships, we just never experienced them before. We have cruised with three other cruise lines, but love Princess the most. There is just something about them and we will continue to look at Princess first for our future cruising.
