This was a cruise that satisfied our requirements. Mainly a one way trip to Singapore and cruise back to US. We had been on the Island twice, so we were familiar with the layout of the Coral. The ship had been in drydock prior to this cruise, so we expected some glitches.
This was our 20th cruise on Princess. We are both in our early 60's and live between Honolulu and Long Beach.
Itinerary was great, visiting 2 countries we hadn't been to yet. The stops were in Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Hawaii and finishing in LA. There was a stretch of 9 sea days crossing the date line and having 2 November 5ths. 5 sea days followed the stops in Hawaii. We knew this could be a bumpy ride and were right. From the time we raced to get around the Typhoon that struck Taiwan after we'd been there to LA, it was a rockin. We like the motion, but when the barf bag holders appeared outside the elevators, we knew others didn't. Very windy cruise, with Deck 7 and 15 closed and pools were mostly for water shows while netted over.
Our cabin had the smell of varnish several times and once the room steward had an environmental office come down to check it out.
The only time I saw a crew member have a passenger have words with them was on our departure from Nawiliwili. Tehy were varishing the railings and expected the people to move away from the rail so they could finish. Needless to say the people said no, you wait. The deck crew didn't seem to happy with that and stood there and stared at the people enjoying the sailaway.
Embarkation was delayed a few hours and started right around 2. We arrived at 2 and were directed to a sitting area only to be called right away. We were in the Elite boarding area. Our room was ready and we were able to drop our bags and meet our great room steward Philjun. WE had a mini suite on Baja deck forward near the stair/elevator bank. Room seemed in good condition with new cushions on the sofa and a new mattress. Balcony had paint splattered on it from dry dock painting but wasn't a big deal.
Plumbing would be a off and on problem for the first week. Toilet failed a few times in the first couple days. Easy enough fix from the hallway as it seems it was more than just our cabin. Shower diverter valve was frozen in the shower position and had to be replaced. When the tube would drain I could hear the water draining from tub to pipe under the sink. The floor would flood. I checked pipe and whole PVC pipe under the sink came apart. Plumbers once again came and replaced down pipe and floor sealer with a pre-fabricated metal pipe. It would seem to me that the old PVC should be replaced before failure, but that's not what Princess does.
Complaints of plumbing problems were a topic you heard regularly. The morning of our arrival into LA, ALL the ships water turned off, and was off for around 2 hours. Always keep bottled water.
There were several problems with elevators and doors. Times where 2 out of 4 elevators were out of service. Crew did work hard to keep them up and running.
The doors on the starboard side leading from the buffet to the deck were very dangerous. This was a windy cruise and the door closing mechanisms couldn't handle the wind and slam.Very surprised no one was injured.
Ice dispensers in the buffet were usually broken and an tub of ice with a scooper was placed there. No Thanks.
Captain came on at least 3 times to make Noro Virus warning announcements and I know of at least 5 people who were ill. The first thing gone should've been the ice trays.
We had a very nice secluded table in the Bordeaux Dining room that Enrique assigned us to. He was helping people out that first day letting people chose tables.
After 2 days, I finally had to ask the Waiter his name. First time we've had a Waiter who didn't introduce himself and didn't know anything about the menu each night. Assistant Waiter was excellent and for the 2 nights our Waiter was ill, the fill in also was excellent. He was mostly efficient, but sometimes lost.
Food:
Main Dining room needed a bit more variety in the 32 days. Prime Rib would've been nice more than once. Most beef was of "select" quality, fairly good selection of fish dishes.
Lunch served in dining room was very good,
Lunch in the buffet not rotated enough and salad bar not much variety.
Breakfast is breakfast. Got be where you had to "ask" for Bananas. Traditional Eggs Benedict would've been nice, seems it was usually Salmon. Never saw Ham or Canadian Bacon served.
Would've like to be able to make my own sandwich as on Royal Class ships.
One of the Best meals I had was the fish night in the buffet. Seared Tuna was awesome.
Buffet is small, after being on a Royal Class ship, but it never seemed crowded. Always could find a table.
Hamburgers at Salty Dog were good, only problem was smoking area on other side of bar. If wind was blowing wrong way you got to enjoy cigarette smoke while waiting, Never anyone sitting at bar due to smokers being right next to it.
Alfredo's is offered on alternating sea days with Salty Dog Gastro Pub. Alfredos is in Sabatini's and the menu is limited. Only one veggie appetizer , no soup, and only Pizza. Pizza was good.
Salty Dog Gastro is served in the Crown Grill and the menu is same as fleetwide.
Sea Day Brunch was fantastic, but only 2 times in 32 days. The first time it was posted in the Patter, the second only listed under the hours of the dining room.
Menus for the day in the App or TV, were often missing and then most of the times incomplete.
Room service was very quick and our orders were usually correct.
Food is subjective, this is just my opinion.
Bar service was outstanding as usual. Lido Bar, Crooners, Crown Grill. All the refers went out at the Lido Bar for a few days and bar staff used ice chests to fill in.Princess puts out a drink menu and the it's hit or miss if there will be the beers printed on it. They have a printing dept on board, so you can get your daily sales pitch, why not print accurate menus?
We don't like big crowds and stayed away from the theater. Did enjoy a comedian and ventriloquist in the Universe lounge. I think the best show was the Princess World Orchestra Rock Edition. Unfortunately it was only twice.
Poorest Lido deck entertainment of any cruise I've been on. Weather wasn't too good for live music, but when Oceans Boulevard did play, they put people to sleep. Movies not in app or Patter, or just wrong, with same ones being repeated. Cartoon movie, for who? Something called CrownDJ which is music videos, but without volume. Funny volume was up when Princess commercial was played EVERYDAY. Cruise director volume blasting over speakers everyday after the barely audible briefing from the bridge. I did send i a comment card and the CD did leave me a voice message but nothing changed.
NFL and NCAA football was played and appreciated by US passengers and by our Aussie friends after a few games explaining the rules.
We didn't do any Princess Cruise excursions. The one we had through Princess was cancelled due to our late arrival into Hong Kong.
We had planned to go ashore in Nah Trang, but after watching the tender operation from our balcony decided not to. Not the ships problem, but the swells were messing things up. Several said it was the worst tender experience of their cruising times. 25 minutes took upwards of 1:30 for some.
As soon as we set sail, the port stop in Nha Trang was changed to Cam Rahn. There is nothing in Cam Rahn. Princess offered a "free" shuttle service to a Marriott resort where you were charged just to go the beach. Another 20 minutes and the shuttle would have been in Nah Trang, but why when Princess wanted $50 for that. Hope they got a kickback.
Hong Kong arrival was delayed and Princess offered a free shuttle to high end shopping mall. Would've been nice if they had given information about the area the mall was in, but that wasn't done. Guess we got a bus ride to see the city to the mall and back.
It might sound like I've listed a lot of problems, but we had a GREAT time. Met several new friends and reunited with others we've met on previous cruises. Never saw anyone treating others including the crew badly or being rude. Very nice group aboard.
Got reacquainted with crewmembers we haven't seen in awhile and met new ones we can't wait to see again.
The Island and the Coral are off our list for now, regardless of how outstanding the itinerary might look.
Aloha!
