Ship Reviews

This was our 2nd time on the Harmony and 4th time on an Oasis class of ships. We have sailed many times since the COVID restrictions were lifted and the crowds don’t concern us but there were a lot of children on this sailing and I suppose being Halloween week, maybe we should have realized that. Embarkation: Very easy and smooth. The line moved quickly and we were on with a few minutes of being dropped off at the pier. We love the facial recognition. Rooms: Available right at 1:00 pm as promised and one piece of our luggage came quickly. The 2nd bag came shortly thereafter but it took a long time for our small duffle to come (it contained gift bags for the crew). Our room steward found it on the opposite side of the ship and quickly brought it to us. We were in an outside balcony room and loved the layout. The closet space was nicely placed (not right outside the bathroom) and there was plenty of storage space. I think the showers were larger than I remember on the Allure and very nice. The automatic nightlight in the bathroom was also nice. I like that they removed the table in front of the couch however it was very hard to sit and have coffee or a drink near you since the only table space near a chair was the counter where we had our computers and other items. I think they would benefit by putting a small table somewhere in front of the couch. Cruise staff: The cruise staff were incredible as always and I would like to recognize the following people on our sailing who all provided exceptional service and deserve extra credit for making our cruise extra special: We realize many of the crew have worked together for many years and they look like they really enjoy their jobs and have fun working together. Your crew really looks like they enjoy making customers happy. We did not see anyone that didn’t smile and ask you how you were doing, what they could do for you, etc. and we really appreciate that kind of service. I know how hard they work and we always give them extra tips so they know they are appreciated. General Comments: Overall, the ship is beautiful – It was very clean and easy to get around. I think they are lacking in pool options though and they were always very crowded. I miss that they didn’t have an adults only pool in the Solarium area. We are Diamond level and still purchased the Premium Beverage package pre-cruise since the Diamond level only gets you 4 drinks a day. The price of the package has really increased but buying it pre-cruise was slightly cheaper. We went to one of the special Diamond level events which are always interesting but missed the 2nd one due to timing. We were very pleased that they changed the rules on the Diamond lounge to allow Diamond members in from 5:00PM – 8:00 PM when in the past, it was just for Diamond + and Pinnacle members. The service and snacks were very nice and we met some very nice people. Specialty Restaurants: We cruise often so have done all the specialty restaurants and don’t feel they are a good value for us since we aren’t big eaters but we did go to Jamie’s and really enjoyed it. The meal was still too large for us but at least it wasn’t 8 courses like some of the other Italian restaurants and we had excellent service and the food and wine were very good. Dining and Food: We tried to arrange for Anytime dining prior to boarding but couldn’t get the same time every night. Once on board, we worked with the Maître D’ and we were able to change our time on subsequent nights to be at the same table and the same time which worked out excellently. We had a table for 4 and met some people that were having difficulties getting their dining squared away so invited them to our table and it worked out great. The food in the MDR was good but I would not say exceptional – we tend to eat a salad or soup and an appetizer which was all we need. We are not usually big fans of the Windjammer but went there several times and found the food and service to be very good. We found tables right at the entrance (near the bar) that were in a great location. We ended up eating breakfast several days in Johnny Rockets and it was excellent. Both the service and the food were great but there was no bar so we had to get drinks elsewhere. We did eat breakfast one day in the Solarium but there were so many screaming and unruly children that we decided not to go back. We thought that children were not allowed in that area but were told they were when accompanied with parents. Sad that the parents do not control them. We did attend the Park Café for lunch and it was good although I think the salad options were somewhat limited from what I have seen in the past. We always purchase the drink package and my husband and I are wine drinkers and found the wine selections to be very limited. We did go to Vintages once where there is a better selection but you have to pay the difference between what the package covers and the cost of the wine. Entertainment: The entertainment options were okay. The Aqua Theater show was canceled twice because of rain and when they did the make-up show, it was not as good as I remembered. I am not sure if they changed it up or not but it wasn’t anything special. We missed the production Ice show but saw the 2nd one that was so entertaining! The songs were wonderful! We skipped Grease as we have seen it before but did see Columbus for the first time and thought it was excellent! The music at Bolero’s was very good but I felt they needed more music in the general Promenade area. We are accustomed to being on ships that have live music almost all the time in the central area of the ship. We did enjoy the Love and Marriage show and Corey is a great cruise director. He was actually on our last sailing a year ago so it was good to see him again. We really enjoyed the piano player Nick Reeve at Schooner’s several nights. He did a great job engaging the crowd and played a lot of great music. We were sorry that we didn’t ever get to see the “piano player” with the roaming piano. We actually ran into him (without his piano) and asked where he was and he told us he only played at night but we never saw him again. Other Comments: Out of 30 cruises, we have sailed on RCCL 15 times but after sailing some of the other lines (e.g. Princess and now NCL) we find the other cruise lines to be a better value. Princess and NCL are now offering rates that include the drink package, tips, Internet and specialty dining. The additional costs to get those benefits on RCCL has increased the price tremendously. That is certainly something we consider when we cruise. Internet and Royal App: The Internet worked very well. I needed to check in with my office most days and found the speed to be very reasonable. Debarkation: Awesome! We chose to walk off with our bags and had no issues whatsoever. We left the room around 8:30 am and were off within 10 minutes. The facial recognition is amazing!

Harmony of the Seas is a large ship and is loaded with entertainment options. I enjoyed this cruise thoroughly. I introduced my 76 year old mother to cruising with this trip. She has limited mobility and thrived on the ship. The amount of assistance and care provided by the crew towards my mother was heart warming. We started the 7 day cruise on night one by attending the performance of Grease. It was excellent and a highlight of the trip. Unfortunately, the rest of the shows didn’t match this standard; however, Grease was a ridiculously high bar to reach. As far as food, I have a mixed review. The hamburgers at Johnny Rockets are out of this world. However, I found the buffet meals to be average at best. I really hated the set up of the buffet, and I think the choices were limited when compared with other cruise lines. Another downside for me was the casino. The amount is smoke and smell was a problem. After one evening here, I avoided for the rest of the cruise. The funny thing is it wasn’t because of losing either. The ship overall is a wonderful experience. Lots to explore and see. Always something to do. The ship never seemed overcrowded with the exception of disembarkation. That leaves me to the worst part of the experience. The disembarkation was tedious and chaotic. I’ve been on many cruises and this was the worst at handling customers leaving the ship.

This 7 day cruise was my first experience on a cruise ship. I don't know what I expected, but living in an enclosed space with 5000 of my closest friends was not on my list. The crowds were overwhelming at times, especially during meal times at the buffets. The most frustrating thing was waiting for an elevator. The ship has a LOT of elevators, but there is almost always an extended waiting period trying to get onto one. The service great in the main dining room. Donald really took the time to get to know us, and made sure that we had everything we needed during our meal, even to the poing of serving my gluten-sensitive daughter special meals. The aqua shows were fun to watch, With the excursions we had book, we didn't get any time to see the special shows. The Cozumel trip to see the ruins was a very long day! Overall, a great experience.

TWO WAYS TO RAISE THE BAR
