Ship Reviews

My family of 5 loves to explore and chose Royal Caribean International, Brilliance of the Sea to do it. We received nothing but pure dedicated love on our trip. Mr. Di Li, Front Desk Manager and the rest of the crew ensured our time witOur family of five set out with hearts full of excitement, ready to explore with Royal Caribbean International aboard the Brilliance of the Seas. While the crew showered us with unparalleled hospitality, some glaring shortcomings left a bitter taste—literally. Let’s start with the love: Mr. Di Li, the ever-attentive Front Desk Manager, and the rest of the crew went above and beyond to make our journey feel extraordinary. The ship itself gleamed with immaculate cleanliness, and our stateroom attendant delivered nothing short of five-star, down-to-earth service that truly made us feel at home. The waitstaff were always on point, keeping things pristine and making sure we were never left wanting—until it came to the food. And here’s where things took a nosedive. The main dining room lacked even a whisper of creative culinary flair, with dishes begging for basic seasoning and flavor. Shockingly, some of the same uninspired dishes were spotted in the Windjammer Buffet—a disappointing move for those expecting variety. The much-anticipated Izumi? A flavorless flop. Below-average sushi, laughably small portions, and missing staple dishes left us wondering if we’d walked into a B-list imitation of what’s supposed to be their culinary pride. We didn’t even bother with Chops Grille after hearing repeated complaints from other guests about steaks so salty they were nearly inedible. That feedback alone was enough to steer us away. If you’re an Indian food lover, prepare to have your heart broken. The Indian dishes onboard were flat, uninspired, and lacked the signature rich, creamy flavor profiles you’d expect. I’ve never had Tandoori chicken like the version served on the Brilliance of the Seas—it didn’t look or taste anything like authentic Tandoori chicken. It was unrecognizable and a far cry from the vibrant, smoky flavors that make Indian cuisine so irresistible. On the positive side, there were plenty of activities for the kids, and they had a blast. They made new friends and spent their days climbing the rock climbing wall, playing pickleball, and shooting hoops on the basketball court almost every day. However, there was room for improvement. There could have been more activities geared toward kids and teens, especially options that didn’t feel like they were designed solely to add costs. For example, while the game room was fun, the costs quickly added up. I’d suggest Royal Caribbean offer a free, limited-time game card so kids can enjoy without parents worrying about hidden expenses. Then there’s the beverages. Free options like lemonade and tea were so watered down and bland, they felt like a calculated nudge to shell out for a drink package. But here’s a hack for future cruisers: bring your own instant drink flavor packets and stock up on water and soda before boarding. You’ll thank me later. On top of that, we ran into maintenance issues with our stateroom. The refrigerator didn’t work, the air conditioning went out, and the hot water was intermittent—all of which could’ve easily derailed our trip. However, the maintenance team was quick to respond and resolve the problems, ensuring that we could continue our vacation with minimal disruption. Their efficiency deserves recognition, as they turned what could have been a nightmare into a manageable inconvenience. Despite its flaws, the trip wasn’t a disaster. The love and effort from the crew made it memorable, and the kids enjoyed their time onboard. However, the gaps in culinary experience, the limited variety of kid-focused activities, and initial stateroom issues left us wondering if Royal Caribbean is coasting on its reputation instead of raising the bar. Would we sail again? Maybe. But only with lower expectations—or a better dining plan.h them was special. The ship is imaculate cleaned and stateroom attendent provided nothing less than first class service friendly and down to earth. The waiters are always there to when you need them and kept things cleaned. The food was their shortcoming as main dining lacked the creative culinary attention by not adding seasoning or flavor profile to their dishes. Some of their dishes were in Winjammer buffet. UZUMI did not represent flavoring was below average, small propotions and were missing common dishes they are known for. Chop did not go after guest informed me that the steaks were overly salty. The lemonade and tea which is free is les desirable and makes you want to buy a drink package. Be smart buy the instant water flavor packets there are so many good ones out there and bring your water and soft drinks. The teens game room needs updated to larger screen. My kids avoided it because of the small screens. I guess they rather you go to their game room and spend. They have an awesome gym and steam room and dry sauna. This will limit how much you spend on beverages. Overall we enjoyed our trip.

I am giving this cruise 5 stars -- with a few "despites," so let me get all of that out of the way now. Despite the fact that my family caught COVID on the ship, despite the fact that the ship is a bit worn down (smashed window in the main dining room, chairs needing new upholstery, rust on the ship's exterior, broken curtain hooks in our cabin, and a sewage smell on the lower decks), the experience we had was wonderful. Why? Because on this ship, it's all about the crew -- kindhearted and committed individuals who will go out of their way to exceed your expectations. This is why the smaller ships are so special! Special recognition goes to our hardworking cabin steward, Widicar; our amazing waiter, Gusti; our fine Assistant Waiter, Loftus; our lovely headwaiter Lorena; Nathan, the wonderful performer in the pub; Kayshelle, our sweet server in Izumi; Alejandro and Vijay, the bartenders in the pub; and especially to Pramod, the Food and Beverage Director, who showered us with free gifts just because we recognized him from a past cruise. Also, let me say how great it was to chat with the friendly cast members when we met at Paradise Beach Club on Cozumel. Again, this ship is all about the people! As far as the food goes, it wasn't the best we've had, but then again, this is my 44th cruise and 22nd on Royal, and I know what to expect. Izumi is delightful -- some of the best sushi we've ever had, but the food in the dining room and Windjammer are just OK. One night in the dining room, we ordered a steak, which we simply could not cut. There are loads of activities to enjoy. Three that I recommend you attend are the Quesst, the Captain's Corner, and the Parade of Nations on the last day. Our balcony cabin was comfortable with lots of storage. Our shore excursion in Belize was canceled due to "operational issues," but the Shore Excursions rep did a herculean job rebooking dozens of folks on other tours. We enjoyed the two production shows -- the cast works really hard, despite technical difficulties that ensued, and the guest entertainers, a juggler, a comedian and an outrageously talented rock band with singer called Rookie, were all very, very enjoyable. Getting on and off the ship were quick and easy. So, here's the bottom line: If you want a relaxing cruise without the bells and whistles, and where the people you meet are the true destination, this cruise is for you. Plus, it leaves from New Orleans, which is a delightful city to explore before or after your cruise.
