Ship Reviews

Grandeur of the Seas continues to offer a very relaxing, casual elegant style of cruise with friendly service throughout. If you do your homework and know what the ship offers and what it does not you'll find this older vessel to be in great shape and you won't be disappointed. If you're looking for a sports deck with basketball court or flow rider or water slides and that's important to you or your children Grandeur might not be the right ship for you. Embarkation was a breeze and after a delightful lunch at Chops Grill our stateroom was ready, luggage delivered and we were welcomed onboard by our friendly stateroom attendant Rogelio. Our stateroom did not have a refrigerator so he provided daily ice service which worked out well. Many of the ships public rooms such as the Viking Crown Lounge, South Pacific Lounge, Schooner Lounge felt brand new. The beautiful Great Gatsby Dining Room offered very friendly service by our wonderful waiter Jay and Vincent. Jay would give us a second shrimp cocktail, escargot and extra desserts. We enjoyed all of the dining both in the MDR and the Windjammer. We were very pleased with Grandeur and look forward to returning on her very soon. I cannot think of anything negative to say about this delightful classic Royal Caribbean ship which helped Royal Caribbean to become the successful cruise line it is today. If you're looking for a classic cruise experience with excellent service at a low cost and a variety of itineraries on a well maintained older vessel you will very happy with your choice of vessel.

Decided to book this cruise back in June. I liked the length and some new destinations (Martinique and Dominican Republic) Embarkation was quick and smooth and we were in our stateroom at 1:00 PM sharp. Disembarkation was smooth as well. I knew this cruise would be special when people started forcing the large steel access doors to gain their staterooms before the announcement was made that the staterooms were ready. Why do I call it the “Wal-Mart Cruise”? I felt like I was in a Wal-Mart on a Saturday Afternoon! I know people are from different backgrounds and means. It would be nice if people would make an effort to at least slightly elevate their behaviours. Loud, obnoxious people everywhere. Wearing baseball caps in the dining room and wearing the same clothes daily. Many were disrespecting the crew without any pleases or thank you's. Why can't some people wear inexpensive earphones when listening to music shows, movies, etc. on their phones? The ship is well maintained and the stateroom was kept clean. Staff on board were excellent. Even though many people on this cruise complained loudly about the food, it was fine. I guess the Wal-Mart people aboard expected fine dining establishments like Applebees or Taco Bell.

I would have rated this cruise five stars if not for the food and the need for refurbishment, which I will discuss later. Embarkation was very easy, with no chaos at all. We arrived at 11:30 AM despite the check-in time of 1:30 PM. The lines moved well, and we boarded the ship about 10 minutes later. Granted, we had priority embarkation since we stayed in a suite, but it seemed others were getting aboard quickly. Checking in on the app really helped things move along smoothly. My friend had trouble with the app, and she had no problem checking in at the pier. Our cabin was ready by 1 PM. We stayed in a 1-bedroom suite. When you walk into the room, there is an island/bar area with a mini-fridge inside a cabinet. That's where the closets and storage are. A nice full-length mirror was on one wall. Our beds weren't separated, and we asked our steward to separate them. My only issue was that the bedding was loose and kept shifting and untucking. We ended up making the beds ourselves. As much as I liked our room steward, he didn't make the bed well. Plus, the king-sized bedding was put under the bed, so we weren't able to store our luggage underneath. Even so, there was plenty of storage. We opted for foam pillows, which were so much better than the flat feather pillows. We even got a neck pillow. The room had a curtain you could close, separating the living area from the beds. There were two chairs, a sofa, and a coffee table. The TV was in an odd position so you couldn't see it from the sofa and we had to turn the chairs to watch it. The beds were a bit far away to watch the TV. There were only two visible USA sockets. I did unplug the coffee maker to use that as well. The bathroom was large, with two sinks, counter space, and drawers. There was a bathtub instead of a walk-in shower. The shower head was great, but the tub wall was so high that I'm sure an elderly person or a shorter person like me would have a difficult time getting into it. I kept stepping on the drain plug, filling the bath with water. They provided shampoo & conditioner dispensers as well as a peppermint body wash. The conditioner was very nice!!! The storage was abundant. The staff was amazing and friendly! They went above and beyond to please the passengers. Nothing was too much to ask for! Our room attendant, Christian, noticed we were using all the ice, so twice a day, he would set up a large ice bucket in addition to the regular ice bucket. He was always there to open our door for us when he was in the corridor. The bartenders were attentive and made sure to remember your name, especially if you made the time to talk to them. One bartender made me a Blue Curacao Pina Colada fresh without using a pina colada drink mix. It was amazing and delicious. The entertainment was the best I've experienced on a ship! The cruise director was Jamie Fentiman. Not only was he hilarious, but he was also talented! He has a beautiful singing voice and is an excellent dancer. Jo was the M.C. for many of the game shows. We loved him! Funny, cute, and entertaining!! The games were so much fun! Love & Marriage, Battle of the Sexes, Karaoke, etc. Most of the games were in the South Pacific Lounge on deck 6. It was a great venue—lots of seating and a nice dance floor. Some games were at the pool, such as the Belly Flop contest, the Sexiest Man contest, and the Guests vs. Crew water volleyball game. The crew got in the pool with their uniforms on. LOL. The shows in the Palladium Theater were excellent. We saw a magician, a late-night comic, a juggler, etc. There was no lack of great entertainment on the ship. So, the food.....NOT good! The only food we really enjoyed was Chops. Get the Pork Belly appetizer! It's to die for! Each night is a theme night for food. Mexican, Caribbean, Italian, and so on. I had enchiladas on Mexican night, and there was barely any meat in the flour tortilla. The rice was molded, and I could literally pick the entire thing up with my fork...like a lollipop. The carne asada was two thin strips of beef that were no more than a half ounce in total. We opted to eat at the buffet since the dining room food was not to our liking. Most ships have a stir-fry station and a grill to cook burgers. Not this ship! They had stir-fry already made. I asked if they had a chicken, beef, or seafood stir fry, and I was told to pick out some cooked food at the other buffet stations and add it to the cooked stir-fry! Despite the ship needing renovations, that was not our biggest issue. The food was my biggest peeve, and other cruisers agreed. The ship is small compared to the newer ships, but I loved this cruise from all the friends I made! It's equal to NCL Dawn, Jewel, Gem, and Pearl. If you're a social person who likes interacting with others, this is the cruise for you!
