Ship Reviews

We were drawn to this cruise as a "target of opportunity" because we live only about an hour's drive from the Port of Baltimore, so getting to the ship was no chore at all. The baggage handling, parking, and check-in were all handled quickly and efficiently. This "veteran" ship turned out to be in good shape, and our mini-suite on Deck 8 was spacious, well-equipped and pleasant. On a percentage basis this ship has far fewer balcony rooms and suites than newer vessels, and it was interesting to discover that a fair number of passengers book this ship again, and again, and again, stay in interior cabins, and receive top-level perks because of their Diamond status and above. This was our 39th cruise, but only our third on Royal, the first in a long time, but we have Diamond status because we've been on Celebrity many times. It was interesting to chat with the regulars in the lounge reserved for Diamonds and above. They know everything about the ship and the staff. Overall, the cruise met our expectations, and in some areas, exceeded them. We appreciated the smaller size of the ship (by today's standards), and the staff was uniformly pleasant, skilled, and accommodating. The food in the main dining room was mediocre, nothing horrible, but suffered from the usual steam table problems when cooking for so many. We ate at Giovanni's twice and the steakhouse once. Both were excellent. We also did the Chef's Table one night, and the food, wine, and fellow diners were delightful. The upstairs buffet was typical, but we did enjoy the large variety of fresh fruit that was regularly available all over the ship. We also enjoyed the Diamond lounge for its excellent coffee machine. The biggest disappointment was the entertainment. The production shows in the theatre were really quite terrible, and that's no reflection on the performers. It's just that they are trite, with terrible musical arrangements, and mixed at unreasonably high sound pressure levels that literally forced us to leave mid-show. Similarly, the music in the Centrum was almost always unjustifiably loud. The pianist/singer in the Schooner Bar was OK, but what is really needed is a "grownup" bar with two or three good musicians who play at reasonable levels and can read the room. It was also disappointing to be forced to miss two of the three ports on the itinerary due to weather, especially Coco Cay which we were looking forward to. Substituting Port Canaveral amounted to another sea day for us. But we were impressed enough with the ship and the staff to book her again next fall, this time for a leaf-peeper cruise.

The picture package was way worth my money when I got it for half price in the app. I thought 100 pics would be too much but when time came to pick it was hard. Love that the picture frames were half off on the ship. There was Not enough of non alcohol activities for adults. also hot tubs close too early for those that can’t sleep and want to relax what is there to do. It would be nice to just relax in hot tub before bed instead of drinking at a bar. We asked attended for mattresses topper and it made a big difference on the bed and they had it on by time we ate dinner. Duck trading and hiding made the trip more entertaining for sure. We hid 150 ducks and had a blast watching those finding them. We found and traded over 20 ducks for sure Not sure if I would go out of my way to find another cruise overall unless I seen an opportunity to get one at excellent pricing. Maybe something with more land time than sea time.

Pleasantly surprised. I would sail on Vision again. I have not been happy with the larger Royal ships. However, this ship was very nice. Loved the lectures which were about outer space. They were by an astrophysicist. The food in the MDR was decent although a little hit or miss. We did most lunches in the specialty restaurants. They had good specials pre cruise. Really liked Izumi however we probably should have just done ala carte, way too much food on the fixed price option. Between Chops and Giovani we preferred Giovani for lunch. The shows we went to were exceeded expectations. The shows on the larger ships are showier however the performances on this ship were excellent. We had an Oceanview cabin on deck 2. The cabin itself was fine and so was the service. Only 2 downsides: they still use the clingy shower curtains (I hate them), and no mini fridge. The steward did bring us ice when we needed to chill a bottle of wine. Embarkation and disembarkation were good. The port of Baltimore is a good port to sail out of if you use your own car. There were only 2 downsides to the cruise. There was a significant vibration on the ship during the sail down to the Carribean. According to someone else on Cruise critic it has to due with propeller speed and some other factors. The cruise on the way back was much smoother. The other downside of the cruise, which is of course out of Royal's control and could happen on any cruise on any line, is someone got sick onboard and the ship had to make an emergency detour to San Juan. This added an extra day to a cruise that was pretty long in the first place. Service by ALL the staff was excellent.

Dining

DELICIOUS DINING ON DECK

Boasting a truly global culinary scene, Vision of the Seas® makes every meal a deliciously unforgettable experience. Whether you’re craving flavourful Japanese cuisine, Old World-style Italian favourites, or classic steakhouse dishes, this ship has you covered.

IZUMI: You’ll find expertly rolled sushi, fresh nigiri and sashimi, izakaya-style appetisers, and savoury meats cooked on ishiyaki grilling stones at Izumi. Go for the four-course tasting menu or order a la carte — everything that comes out of the kitchen here is a win.

GIOVANNI’S: For authentic Tuscan-inspired eats, head to Giovanni’sSM Table. Start with the house focaccia and marinated artichokes, then go for a savoury veal osso buco or a traditional creamy risotto. Just make sure you save room for a serving (or several) of tiramisu.

CHOPS GRILLE: This fleet-favourite offers the quintessential steakhouse experience — at sea. Dial up dinner with succulent seafood dishes or tender prime steaks paired with family-style sides that are every bit as delicious as the main courses they accompany. Cap it all off with some New York-style cheesecake.
