Silversea’s Shadow Class luxury cruise ships Silver Shadow and Silver Whisper offer you freedom and space to design your day. Silver Shadow retains Silversea’s essence—spacious suites and superior service—paired with a lively cosmopolitan atmosphere and enhanced amenities. Energise body and mind in the upgraded spa and fitness centre. Savour fine wines and French gastronomy in La Dame and enjoy authentic Italian cuisine in La Terrazza, endless ocean views from The Grill, and internationally inspired dishes in The Restaurant. From delectable dining to relaxation in ultra luxury, cruising has never felt so good.
Cruising with Silversea has sometimes been hit-or-miss since its purchase by Royal Caribbean, but it was refreshing to see on this cruise that the high Silversea standards have not dropped. Although this is one of the older, smaller ships, it did not feel old at all. In fact, many people on the ship actually prefer the older ships to the newer, larger ships. The lower number of passengers gives it a personal feel where you get to know the staff and fellow passengers better, which is nice. The ship has all the amenities of the larger ships, just not the S.A.L.T. kitchen and restaurant, and no pizza place. Other than that, it seems to be the same. I would definitely sail on one of the older ships versus one of the newer ships. Activities were the usual with most cruises with daily trivia, etc., and the cruise director was very personable, making an effort to meet each passenger. We had a standard veranda cabin which was nice with a butler that kept suggesting things he could do for us, which was really nice. We don't use the butler much, but it was nice that he was available. Service was outstanding. It was rare to be in a public space and not have a waiter come up to offer something. Service in the dining rooms was on point and I was actually impressed by the sommelier's knowledge. Pro Tip for Cabin selection: Keep in mind with these smaller ships that if your cabin is towards the front of the ship, you will hear the anchor drop early in the morning if the ship is at anchor. I've been on multiple Silversea ships and had that pleasure. It is not a big deal, but it will wake you up. Dining is balanced well between the main dining room, the Grill, and La Terrazza. There is La Dame for an extra $120 a couple, but I find it kind of annoying that on a luxury line there is that extra surcharge. We opted not to dine there, but others felt compelled to do it. I had heard that the dover sole was wonderful, but nobody said it was well worth the price, so take that for what it's worth. The food in the main dining room had the biggest selection and was fine for us. For breakfast and lunch we would normally dine in La Terrazza, which has one of the smallest buffets on a cruise ship, but still good food. If there is anything on Silversea that is always weak, it is the entertainment. Royal Caribbean for some reason sticks with a formula for Silversea where they have the "Silversea Singers" along with two Eastern European dancers. Why they can't find performers that can actually sing and dance is beyond my comprehension. The singers sing the standard crowd favorites, while the dances do all the dancing associated with the songs. It would be ok if the singers had exceptional voices, but sadly after a few performances, we simply stopped going to see them. Disembarkation is fairly easy with a small ship, and Silversea is organized with this. Embarkation is orderly as well, but you have to wait for someone to fill out your luggage tags, as for some reason (probably cost cutting) they won't mail you luggage tags in advance. Silversea used to be known for sending out beautiful pre-cruise packets to your house, but sends nothing but emails now. To sum it all up, if you are thinking about sailing this ship, by all means, go ahead. It is well maintained and clean with excellent staff, food, and service. The only area Silversea needs to improve on is their technology. There is no shipboard app, only an intranet site you go to once onboard, and the WiFi is slooow, unless you pay an upcharge for decent WiFi (again, why charge on a luxury ship). It is a wonderful experience overall and you will be glad you booked the ship.
