Ship Reviews

We sailed on the 11 day cruise out of Barbados (not the 29 day through to LA). My comments are based on our previous experiences with Seabourn, Regent, Oceania and most recently Explora Journeys. This is our 2nd Silversea in the past 4 years. Our travel agent found this itinerary which fit our schedules. We were advised go on and book dining and shore excursions. Because we booked after these opened for online bookings before we booked the cruise, we had only the restaurant and shore excursion reservations that were left over. We had a Silver Suite, not inexpensive, but yet we got the left-overs. We never got a beach excursion and had to repeatedly beg to get into Kasaki 2 nights prior to the end of the cruise. Strike one .... We enjoy the use of a butler and Silversea has one in every category of rooms. IMHO, this dumbs down the product. Our butler did everything that we asked of him and he was tipped accordingly. But - our experience is that the Indian Butlers are the best in the world, most having been trained in hospitality schools in India. They are simply the best. Our butler seemed VERY busy. His English was not great and his beeper constantly went off when he was here. Not his fault, as stated he did everything that we asked but overall, the butler was not to the level of Oceania where we have had lots of superb butlers. The food on the ship was very good but the up-charge for La Dame and Kasaki was not worth it .... it bugs me to be charged extra when we already paid for an upper level suite. Service in those 2 restaurants as well as the rest of the ship was terrific. We did have one incident with a terribly rude bar staff member which we brought to the attention of management. This was handled well and one bad apple should not reflect on the rest of the great service. One minor exception was the grill lunch service on the last day when it seemed that one or two waiters were ready to be on their way home the next day and had already checked out .... The pizza restaurant on deck 10 (can't spell it) was fantastic. Of all of the lines that we have sailed this was far and away the best pizza at sea. A not published secret is that one can order off the grill menu (deck 9) when seated at deck 10. This gives you the flexibility to have 2 restaurants if everyone in your party can't agree.... The cabin steward - fantastic, he even brought me some of his personal stock of Indonesian hot sauce. Caviar - this can be ordered .... (just like Seabourn) my wife had it every night. One disturbing note was the cancellation of the last port, Grand Turk. This was blamed on deteriorating weather ..... we have a lot of cruise miles (and I'm a professional mariner) and it wasn't that bad. I suspect (with no evidence but suspicion) that since we went through a complete US immigration inspection in San Juan, that a stop in a foreign country would result in another inspection in Port Everglades. Eliminate the stop and we left and US port and the next port was another US port, reducing the clearance process and time on a turn-around day ... A little more on food ... breakfast - the bacon and sausage tasted European .... why can" a cruise line (they are all like this) do a "Waffle House" at sea???? But the last straw that will probably keep us away ....forced shopping. Everything here is included. The wine is good and many shore excursions are included. We ended up having to spend (or lose) about $650 in on-board credit. We had previously experienced this at Regent and it was one reason we left Regent after over 150 nights there ..... To add insult to injury we spent the money and had a message that we got into Kasiki after returning from the shops .... $80 that we spent in the shops that we shouldn't have ..... The on-boarding process was smooth..... Our Silver Suite was well laid out and worth the extra $$$ Bottom line, I'm not in a rush to return to Silversea, but ..... the wife may over-rule that ...

Great experience. Fantastic food. Staff welcoming and professional. Boat modern with all you require for a medium size cruise ship. 500 guests approx with 400 staff. Butler on board to cater for all your needs such as breakfast in your room or a wine on the balcony or booking trips. The trips offshore were more variable so be selective - beach trips were over-crowded, some turtle watching snorkeling events were disappointing. Silversea may wish to send some reps on the trips to keep the quality up. The tender worked well. The small number of guests was perfect. Sometimes after 10pm the ship felt empty as guests were all early to bed persons, so the disco was empty after 1030pm. Overall a super luxury experience made perfect by the excellent food and restaurants. I will certainly book another trip most likely on a small boat with small numbers of guests and a more intimate experience.

Thoroughly enjoyed this experience. The quality of the service at every level was exceptional. The butler and suite attendant made everything so simple we could just cruise. Dining at Alantide and Terraza was excellent. Salt was good except for a tuna dish which came out overdone. The lunch buffet at Terraza was overwhelming but everything good. We did not enjoy the menu at Kaiseki and found the service there wanting. The food there is probably a matter of personal taste. Silver Note had excellent entertainment but a somewhat strange menu. While the table service at the pool was tepid, the food, especially the pizza was excellent. They even had a gluten free pizza. All of the restaurants had our dietary needs available and made accommodations for gluten free meals. Our cabin was spacious and well equipped. That said, I would not recommend deck 11 as only one elevator goes to that level and that elevator does not go to all levels. To disembark for excursions you have to walk a fair distance to change elevators on a lower deck.

The Silver Moon is a stunning ship and the perfect size for discerning cruisers. The staff, like our previous Silversea expedition sailing to Antarctica, were caring, attentive, personable and professional. Embarkation and Debarkation were not crazy and went very smoothly. This was a SALT cruise and the cooking kitchen was a fun experience to add to your trip. Be sure to sign up early for this as it fills up. The restaurants on board were all very well run and food choices were fresh and nicely curated. A bit disappointed in the SALT restaurant quality but it may have had something to do with the Caribbean location. We traveled with two other couples who had not sailed with SS and they loved the experience. My reason for only a very good rating is because we were surprised by some of the excursions and the lack of organization or professionalism within those. Please understand the shore staff for Silver Moon were wonderful but some of the companies and personnel running the excursions were in one case dangerous. Our Butler was super attentive. This is not a sailing for kids and there were non on board - they would be bored! The Silver Moon is worth sailing on!
