Ship Reviews

Feedback: Rhine River Cruise on AMAWaterways Its not good to take a group to a destination and then have one part of the group in a more desirable location than the second part. We enjoyed the Sheraton. Its a beautiful hotel. The staff could not have been more helpful, the food was very good, it was clean and the pool was heaven. Our waiter Antonino was the best. BUT the poolside restaurant was booked for private events 2 of 3 nights we were there. We feel that if we were at the Hilton and could have walked to the town of Como, our experience would have been much different. As it is, we had an experience of the Sheraton rather than the culture of the town. We r thankful for the excursion to Como and the boat trip to Bellagio. On the ship there were at least 3 groups of people traveling together. As a separate couple we found ourselves having to navigate around the groups constantly. The staff in the dining room even made us change our table to accommodate a group! This made me angry. The second time they asked us to move for a larger group we refused. If the dining room was reserved seating, thats one thing. But open seating means just that. We had a right to sit anywhere we chose. There were NO tables for 2. So no matter where we sat, someone would be sitting with us. We feel that the group should have been made to be considerate to all the other passengers that they made uncomfortable. They were loud and rowdy in the lounge, even talking over top of the speaker at times. On the bus and in excursions they were pushing the single couples to the side and saving seats. In the end, those of us traveling alone began to help each other. Which is natural but I feel the staff could have helped to make sure ALL the guests had an equally good time and not just play to the groups. We would like to commend Farran Vasquez. He managed our whole trip with calm grace and positive attitude. He answered every question, was everywhere all the time managing every detail. He sat with us on a train ride and talked with us when we were feeling little lost and homesick d/t struggling with the groups. When our transfer bus jettisoned a tire during trip to the airport (in a tunnel on a bridge) he was immediately in charge, on the phone accessing help. He was calm and kept us all informed up to the minute. The ship was beautiful, the staff very helpful except for the waiter who kept asking us to move. We would definitely go on another AMA cruise.

We were greeted with smiles and prompt attention to check in. Even though we were late we were asked if we had eaten supper as they were still serving. The food and wine were delicious. The room was clean and comfortable. The waitstaff was attentive and took care of us. The second day we interacted with our room attendant and asked about laundry. She showed us how to do it. We put out 2 bags. It was returned promptly, well taken care of. Our room was well taken care of everyday. Our cruise director, Martina, was great. She was cheerful, always a smile and very helpful. We got to know one waiter fairly well. He always greeted us and took care of us, ladies first always! We throughly enjoyed Sip and Sail everyday. The bartenders did are great job. The the day of our 51st anniversary, we attended the Chef’s Table. They made us a special cake. Even though we had to change ship because of low water levels, AMA did a wonderful job of transferring us with minimal impact. The excursions were well done with great drivers and guides. There was variety of quality entertainment every day. I went on the bridge and talked to both captains. That was informative and good discussions. We know there are many people behind the scenes ensuring the ship operates smoothly. We know they did a fantastic job as we had no issues with anything. In the words of the US Navy, I say Bravo Zulu.

The hotel in Amsterdam was conveniently located near points of interest. The river boat was nice and with under 200 passengers there was an amazing level of personal attention. The points of interest and excursions along the Rhine River were good. In Como, the major disappointment was we were assigned the Sheraton Lake Como, which is far from the town so walking was out, and it has no view of the lake, while others were assigned the Hilton which is located on the lake and a short walk to town. In our group many were very disappointed with this since the cost was the same. Also, on the 2nd and 3rd night the pool restaurant was closed due to a company outing. This should have been disclosed up front! Our Tour Manager, Ferran Vasquez was absolutely fantastic particularly on our very troubling near disastrous bus transfer to the Milan airport!
