Ship Reviews

Not even sure where to begin. From the moment we stepped on board we always felt like we were important to them, from the captain on down. Our cruise director, Antonio, was ever present for any of our needs. He was engaged and engaging, extremely knowledgeable about all aspects and always had everything planned out ahead. Superstar. The culinary staff were amazing, willing to meet any request they were able. The food and drinks were well crafted and customized for every situation. Our cabin steward (Joau ?) was prompt and efficient. The room was a little smaller than other river boats but to be expected with only about 95 passenger capacity. It was amazing how the captain and his crew negotiated the very narrow locks on the river-where it seemed there was less than 6 inch clearance on each side without rubbing. The tours were well curated and all the tour guides were so knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Even on debarkation, our guide stayed with us all the way to security, showing us where to go and ensuring we successfully navigated each step. The entertainment, both on board and off were relevant to the location and enjoyable. I would definitely recommend this itinerary.

The 'Flavours of Portugal and Spain" trip is a luxurious way to experience the Duoro River Valley. The staff on the boat were extremely accommodating right from the first day, and the dining and wine/port sampling were delicious and plentiful. I was a little disappointed that there wasn't much actual cruising up the river - we were docked at port much of the time and, because of the popularity of the Duoro, we were sometimes double-docked beside another boat which meant that the extra cost of a cabin with a balcony was not as beneficial as we had hoped. In addition we had the bad luck of not being able to go through the final two locks because of an accident at the other side, so we missed the upper Duoro. However the bus excursions were interesting and some of the hikes and quintas were exquisite! If you do this cruise, you must like doing things in large groups of people!

First, I have nothing but raves about AmaWaterways. From their customer service planning a trip, through the entire adventure. Everything is so thoughtfully done. We chose a pre- and post-trip extension and it is very special to be met at the airport, taken straight to the hotel, and then be met by your cruise director who will be with you until you leave for the airport at the end of your trip. And imagine my surprise when we were met at the airport by two Ama Reps who took our bags and led us to our airline counter! It's these little touches that make everything better! Even as much as we travel, airports in different countries can be very confusing and to be escorted right up to the counter was just one of the many, many extra services provided by Ama. The food was amazing, wine flowed freely, and the accommodations are comfortable, inviting, and lovingly maintained. Another little touch that said a lot to me - my husband and I take neckroll pillows with us when we travel. After several days on our trip, our cabin stewardess chose to have them laundered. She left us a little note to say what she had done and that they would be returned before bedtime. I've never had any other cruise line do that! There were a thousand little touches that made our trip extra special. And I can NOT say enough about our Cruise Director, Caesario! He was amazing! Nothing escaped his notice and he was always so supportive and engaging. AmaWaterways is the best!!

The staff was wonderful and the cruise director Mariana is amazing. Service was excellent and personable. The entertainment in the evening was definitely lacking! The piano player after dinner put us to sleep. There was no life. When I asked if he could play more lively music I was told “this is what they want me to play”! No wonder no one stayed up in the lounge! The TV had minimal movies, not much of a selection!! If I was sick and had to stay in my cabin, there would be not enough entertainment. The first drop off in Porto was not a good area. It was dreary/dirty and nothing of interest. The 2nd drop off the next day was a good area with much to see and I would much rather have had 2 visits in that area. Tipping- the suggested tip for the cruise director I do not agree with. Yes, she was amazing and I was happy to tip her, however, that is her job. I feel you should pay her enough so you don’t suggest a tip. Again, all the staff is wonderful.
