Ship Reviews

Fabulous insight to Magdalena River with Ama. While I’ve had many other worldly adventures, this was my first river cruise in 30 years. What called me was scenery … solitude. This trip exceeded expectations. We visited local villages, and were treated to so many musical performances. When we couldn’t get to one port for a Jazz street performance, Ama brought sax and violin performers onto ship, from the next stop. Every experience of music and dance was so much more than I express in words. Food was excellent. So many new, to me, tropical fruits. Try the galupa. For those, less adventurous, there are always basic entrees available. Coffee available around the clock. Service was also outstanding. Room well appointed. Diego, our cruise director, arranged a private coffee tasting experience, for us, in Cartagena. Favorite stop was Mompox, followed closely by Calamar. Don’t miss the boat excursion on the tributary. Cheers to Amamelodia !

From the moment we exited barranquilla airport baggage claim with our luggage, we were met by an amawaterways crew member, gabriela, holding a sign, with a welcoming smile. her accompanying host, andres, helped us get our bags onto the air-conditioned shuttle van (not a minivan of any sort, but a new and really nice high-profile van!), piloted by driver, fadul. at the ship we were welcomed by the river guides (luis barreto, natalia, & jd) with bottles of cool water, who tagged our bags bound for our respective staterooms. Once on board the check-in/registration process was simple and low-stress, allowing us time to get to our staterooms to refresh before the carnaval! a buffet of local cuisine, skillfully and artfully prepared by the ship's culinary team awaited us as we followed the caribbean rhythms with dancers, and acrobats enticing our entry into the newly-constructed performance venue. Our family group consisted of 8 individuals proud to be counted as seniors, however we're an active group, participating in more than one of the daily dance, stretching, aerobic, cross-training activities coordinated and led by wellness coach, milo. (Nothing too intense, but we had to do something to be able to justify sitting down to three 5-star meals each day for seven days!) This is not a cruise for young children, which is one of the reasons we selected it, but it most certainly is appropriate for teens who have the maturity to explore and engage in music, cuisine, dance, and artisan crafts unique to a different culture.

As seasoned travelers of 50 years, we really enjoyed the variety of our first AMA cruise. The ship’s rooms were spacious and wonderful and housekeeping did a great job. We especially loved Mila’s exercise classes and Jessica’s fantastic massage skills. To help improve things on this new ship, we have a few suggestions. The massage room’s central location is quite noisy and lacks the privacy you’d expect for a relaxing service. Most importantly, we recommend more training regarding dietary needs. As a gluten-free traveler, I found the communication about safe meals inconsistent compared to other luxury lines. This includes off-ship coordinators in Panama; I had no acceptable food options at one event besides a salad. Reliable meal accommodations for everyone would truly improve the dining experience. Finally, we would love to see more logo items, like water bottles, in the gift shop. Thank you so much for a lovely journey.

Unlike any other river cruise we've done. This isn't a trip for you if you expect posh, ritzy European palaces, museums, etc. This cruise allows you to see how people in a totally different type of community live. This is a part of the world where the economy is much poorer than what most Westerners are used to. Yet it is also a community that is extremely vibrant and rich, with a love of life. The music is rich and lively. Colombia has one of the most bio-diverse environments anywhere on Earth. The colors pop. AmaWaterways is the only cruise line to do this. At times, it seems as though you are the only ship on the river, which again is so different than European river cruises. It's almost as though you're on a ship exploring a new world. So glad we were able to do this cruise, as it definitely enriched our life.
