Login A luxurious boutique hotel at sea, the Azamara Journey is a mid-sized ship with a deck plan that’s intimate but never crowded, and offers everything modern cruisers are looking for—plus some unexpected extras.
We have cruised on Seabourn , Silversea and Viking and whilst we started our cruising on Azamara in 2011 , we have not sailed with them for 4 years , so we thought we'd give them a try again. I guess the first point you have to recognise is that if you accept the standard balcony cabins , the price point is sometimes half a typical 5 star line, and so it's a trade off. As almost all agree , the ships are showing their age, and the bathrooms are particularly cramped. The shower is a struggle even for "normal size" people. Most of the lounger cushions are now badly stained and worn and well overdue for replacement . The other difference is the drinks : there is no included champagne, nor many cocktails. The standard fizz is a basic cava or there is a better (but hard to find) Veuve du Vernay. And yet , on the plus side we found the staff all very professional and friendly. And we were very pleased with the food offerings. It's true it can be a bit of a scrum in the breakfast and lunch buffets in Windows but there was always plenty of choice and it all looked attractive and good quality. As vegetarians we always struggle at dinner , but in fairness our dining experiences on Az were superior to recent Seabourn and Silversea menus with far better flair , choice and presentation. We really like the vibe and style of the Discoveries restaurant. The dress code is pretty relaxed : no jackets and mostly polo shirts , but somehow that works just fine as most folk understand "resort / smart casual". (ie no sports wear / shorts or b/ball caps) As for entertainment , the White Night party was a huge success with lots of folk on the dance floor (and ,we were told, at the after-party , which we opted out of). The evening shows are "OK" . The house band and Harmony Hive band both very good. The "amazing Evening" was just some perfectly good classical singers in the theatre, but a 45 min set is hardly anything special. They used to bus guests off the ship for a really extravagant event with food , drink , music. I guess thats no longer affordable for Azamara. We never use the Az tours as we think them outrageously over priced. They wanted $250 a head for a 2 and a half hour evening walking tour in one port. And a lot are 8 hour coach tours : too long for us. The cruise line has a very strong loyal following , and if you accept the cabin size , and want a quality "small ship" experience without paying 5* prices , I strongly recommend it. The guest vibe is really friendly , and it is natural and easy to strike up a conversation with whoever is next to you in a bar or restaurant. You could of course upgrade to the much bigger and better "club Continent" suites , with a proper bathroom , but that can almost double the price. Journey is due a "refurbishment" later this year. But there really is nothing they can do regarding the cabin configurations.
