Ship Reviews

This was our first time with Celebrity. We have sailed many cruise lines, mostly with Holland America, Carnival and MSC. This was cruise number 43. We opted for Celebrity insurance and flights. Normally, we do this on our own but after researching, we realized Celebrity was giving us the same prices with the added benefit that if any changes needed to be made, they would do it for us. In hindsight, this was an excellent decision and will likely impact our arrangements for future cruises. We were scheduled to fly out of our local airport on Jan 30 and get connecting flights to Barcelona. However, bad weather caused our flights to be cancelled. Celebrity rebooked us for the same flights the following day. After two days in Barcelona, we were ready to board Infinity. Embarkation was smooth and easy although our printed boarding passes were not accepted. The team assisted us in verifying our passes through the app and we were soon on board. Much of this review will be a comparison to our experiences with HAL. There are a lot of pluses and minuses between the two. Embarkation: About the same process and time. There was no pressure (not even a line) for embarkation photos, which held true for the entire cruise. Welcome aboard: Also about the same although we had to again use the app boarding pass. The same "push" to go to the Muster Station right away, which we defered until after we went to our cabin. Cabin: Typical size and layout. This cruise, we opted for Oceanview instead of Interior, so we were quite pleased. In addition, we opted for Prime Oceanview which provided a little better location. We were on Deck 3. The color scheme was neutral and the wall opposite the bed (sidewall) had full length mirrors which made the room feel bigger. The bed was not rectangle. The foot end was rounded as was the metal frame. The frame stuck out from the mattress and posed a potential injury hazard with its sharp edges. We hit our leg a couple of times before moving the mattress all the way to the edge to limit contact with the rounded frame edges. Our cabin steward made sure to mention that we watch our for this. Notably missing were USB outlets near the bed and AC outlets in the bathroom. We didn't find out there was a nightlight in the bathroom for 5 days because it was burned out. Once replaced, it worked fine. Dining: Food on Lido buffet was not as good as HAL. Dining room food was hit and miss but also not as good as HAL. Desserts in both places looked enticing but lacked flavor. Dining service was about equal. Crew: HAL crew seem much more friendly and willing to engage. Celebrity crew less so but there were a few who consistently greeted us with friendly hello's or thank you's. Our cabin steward was often available and did a great job. He worked solo and attended to our cabin twice daily. Entertainment: This was slightly better than HAL. More energetic performances, a fantastic ship band and a great Cruise Director who kept things upbeat and lively! Our evening entertainment was very good. There were a lot of game shows throughout the afternoon and evening too. Port talks and guest speakers were much better on HAL where daily weather, ship map and cruise path was available on TV 24/7, unlike Celebrity who's ship channel gave little information beyond present location. Passengers: There was a noticeable age difference here. The average HAL crowd is 5-8 years older than on Celebrity. We are 69 and 72, so we fit in with the upper average age on Celebrity. Both lines have few kids during school-in-session sailings but can accommodate kids with activities and daily programs. Captain announcements: Much better on HAL. This captain announced position and weather each day. Not much else. We found that HAL captains add a bit of history, navigational trivia or personal experiences. Disembarkation: Now here is where the excitement started!!! Our cruise was scheduled to overnight in Athens - giving us all day Sunday and Monday until 4pm to explore. Instead, our ship lost power around 3am near the port of Athens and we were adrift at sea. Tugboats were called an brought us into port. We had no power, no lights, no toilets, no water, no elevators. Around 7 am, there was an announcement that due to a technical issue, there is no power. Cold breakfast was available on Deck 10 for those who could walk up the stairs to get it. People were allowed to get off the ship but crew recorded each person's exit manually which created quite a line up. Same for getting back on board. In the afternoon, we received a letter stating everyone must disembark and the following cruise was cancelled. We were on the b2b. Celebrity put those on the b2b up in a hotel overnight, everyone else was on their own. We and people coming in for the next cruise were able to get flight change reimbursements and credit for 2 nights hotel. All things considered, Celebrity handled this pretty well and we were thankful to have gotten the flights and insurance through them. We stayed two more nights before coming home. We would sail Celebrity again but we do like HAL a bit better.

First to say, we love cruising on Celebrity, however it’s now like a multi brand product where the overall experience really is noticeably different between older and edge class vessels. We experienced a complete switch in itinerary due to weather and whilst we lost a lot of money due to cancelling private tours, the cruise was better avoiding horrible weather! Infinity recently underwent a small renovation but it’s clear Celebrity focus is on suite guests with everyone else putting up with tied very dated cabins - not least the bathrooms The pros were definitely food quality especially MDR and entertainment in the theatre and bars. The niggles …. We didn’t have a great cabin steward, it was up to us to introduce ourselves otherwise not sure we would have ever met her. The cabin was kept clean and tidy but bathroom was just average. We decided against special restaurants after speaking to other early bookers, we always go to Tuscan Grill but decided against as so many said not good - at a surcharge now of nearly 70 US dollars per person just can’t justify expense when food quality and experience isn’t there. We purchased the premium drinks package and to be honest it wasn’t great for wine drinkers . It’s almost impossible to get the same wine across the ship. Why on earth does any hospitality operator offer one wine in bars ( not all) but doesn’t have the same wines in the dinning areas ? The sommelier wasn’t great but perhaps just too many tables to handle. Very much take it or leave it attitude with what she had in her ice buckets, even when you have 1 glass of something but she doesn’t have any more and needs you to switch on a second glass! Funny thing was waiters and restaurant managers always found it when she wasn’t around ….hmmmm. The WiFi was a shocker onboard. Constantly being kicked off and needing to reconnect, even mid typing a message! Very questionable value for money. As an elite member other than laundry we rarely use the benefits, especially free drinks but looked onboard many did and was organised well it seemed. Overall staff were lovely across the ship especially bar and MDR staff. I would say the dinners were very challenging to access and we are rethinking anytime option on future cruises and returning to 2nd sittings. Flexibility isn’t worth the hassle, we did complain after 3rd night given we were up to 40 minutes in line then waiting 15-20 minutes to be buzzed. I did note it got slightly better later in the cruise but we decided to book a later set table time to avoid. Got 2 more cruises booked this year on Celebrity both on older ships due to itinerary but really hope Celebrity can sort their wine ordering out and their MDR booking systems!!!
