Ship Reviews

We were so excited about going on our first short cruise. We normally take week-long cruises, but this was a five-day, four-night cruise out of Fort Lauderdale. To tell you a little about us, we’ve lately been on three Virgin Voyages (we love Virgin) sailings and have a hard time sailing with any other line, but we had a great experience with Celebrity and wanted to try it again. We arrived the day before from Dallas to Fort Lauderdale. Normally I’m an over-planner, but I missed a few marks on this one. If you arrive a day early, stay near the Publix at 1940 Cordova Road. Not only is it a grocery store, but there’s a Total Wine & More where you can buy wine and champagne. You can carry on at least two bottles of wine plus waters/soda in your carry-on. Have a wheeled carry-on for this and, if you’re buying wine, take bubble wrap or hand towels to wrap the bottles in your bag. This Publix is the closest to the port, and there are several walkable hotels nearby — Embassy Suites, Holiday Inn Express, and Extended Stay America, to name a few. If you come in a few days earlier, these hotels have laundry facilities. Getting out of the Fort Lauderdale airport is a madhouse. Do not rely on hotel transportation even if it’s free — take an Uber. Even the Uber pickup area is crowded, but waiting for hotel shuttles that go from pickup to pickup can be a nightmare. Unfortunately, we stayed at Hyatt House in Dania Beach; it was adequate, but I messed up by not booking near the Publix. The breakfast they provide was terrible — we should have just ordered DoorDash. There were too many people leaving for cruises and only one person managing things, which was a mess. The evening we arrived we took an Uber to dinner at The Boathouse. Highly recommended — great atmosphere; we would go again. The next morning we had a prearranged Uber at 10:30 and got to the ship about 10:45. Please note the port checks ID for everyone entering, including the Uber driver. They want to see your driver’s license and passport — have them ready. By the time we arrived at the port and dropped off our luggage, we were on the ship in ten minutes. We were in The Retreat, so we had a special line and expedited check-in. It was fabulous. We boarded and went right to our muster station to check in. All they needed were our names and cabin number and asked us to stay for about a five-minute talk — about as much as a flight attendant does on an airline. It was adequate. We went to our Celebrity Suite, unloaded our carry-on, and went to the Sunset Bar for our first cocktail. Piña Colada — the best ever! I was very impressed by the drinks; all bars served great cocktails. We went bar-hopping and exploring until the ship set sail. I like to be up by the front of the ship at sail-away. We didn’t partake in any pool parties on the upper deck — being in our 70s, we’re past that — but we did enjoy a cocktail at the members-only Michael’s Club. Great service and atmosphere. By the time we met our room attendant, the luggage had arrived. I was surprised it hadn’t arrived earlier given our room status. We mentioned two things to our attendant. First: “There are no robes in the cabin.” He replied, “Oh, I’ll make sure to get those.” Nope — didn’t happen; we had to call around 11 p.m. the night we returned. Second: we had brought a foldable ice chest for our cabin to keep drinks colder than the mini fridge and asked the attendant to fill it with ice. He said he would put some waters in it and add ice — again, didn’t happen. He never wrote anything down, and if you don’t write things down, people won’t remember. That lack of follow-through was disappointing. We spent the evening at the casino, which was lots of fun, and saw mentalist Ben Price — a truly entertaining show. First stop: Key West. We skipped breakfast to get sloppy joes at Sloppy Joe’s Bar. It was an easy walk, a pleasant day, and we enjoyed the bar. Back on the ship, we had a cocktail and later dinner at Luminae, the exclusive restaurant for suite members. You can have breakfast, lunch, and dinner there from the menu — a tablecloth experience. We spent the evening at the casino again and had more cocktails. Sea day (Wednesday) — a relaxing day exploring more of the ship. We were surprised not to see many kids. We had breakfast at Luminae, skipped lunch, and returned there for dinner but ordered from the Opus/main dining room menu this time. We spent lots of time at the casino, and we saw a comedian whose family-friendly (“Rated G”) show was pretty good. Thursday at Coco Cay — we had breakfast in the buffet, which was enjoyable. We didn’t get off the ship; being in our 70s, we don’t have the interest in the sun like we did when we were younger (too many dermatology appointments!). It was pretty to look at the water and watch people go ashore. We spent time in the solarium and enjoyed a relaxing couples massage. After returning to our cabin and seeing that we’d both won credits on future cruises from the casino, we packed up our belongings to make sure they were outside by 10 p.m. It’s surprising that ice isn’t provided when the room is made up unless you ask for it; we had to call to get our ice chest filled again. We had dinner at Luminae but ordered from the Opus menu; the steaks from the Opus menu aren’t as good — the steaks from the Luminae menu are better. We visited the casino and saw the comedian’s adult show at 10:15 — he was hilarious. After the show we went back to the casino, had some jackpots, cashed out, gambled some more, and were in bed by midnight. Friday — Fort Lauderdale. We got off the ship about 9:30 a.m.; it was easy to collect our luggage. We took an Uber to a hotel resort for a day stay because our flight didn’t leave until 6:30 p.m. You can get a room and day pass at B Ocean Resort, which was very nice and had a bar and food — adequate for waiting before the flight. An Uber picked us up at about 4:45 p.m. Recap — We enjoyed the cruise, the mattress was great and we slept like babies, but our room attendant’s service was lacking; we had to remind him to do things rather than him taking initiative. We still prefer Virgin Voyages over Celebrity. Our next test will be in November: we have a cruise planned out of Galveston on the newly refurbished RCCL Liberty of the Seas. We’ve been on this ship before, but we’re taking another short one to see how it compares. I imagine we’ll be going back to Virgin Voyages after that. :) Hope this helps. There as nothing wrong with this ship!!

My husband and I are seniors and we enjoy cruising with Celebrity. This was our first time cruising on the Reflection. We liked the layout of the ship and it was easy to find our way around. If we got confused, there were signs at various points such as near the elevators and along the corridors. The only issue we experienced is that the elevators seem to move slowly and there don't seem to be enough available when there are a lot of passengers going to the same place, such as the evening theater show or the dining room. The week of our cruise, the passengers were mostly adults and there were young preschoolers but since school is still in session, there were few school aged children. The ship is indeed in "ship shape" form. The staff are uniformly polite and helpful. We really enjoyed the cruise. The two ports, Key West and CoCo Cay, were both very entertaining places to visit with a variety of excursions available. We took the Conch Train Tour in Key West and spent the day at the Co Co Beach Club on CoCo Cay. The evening entertainment on the ship was varied and enjoyable. We will likely cruise with Celebrity gain in a few months.

Great time on the Reflection. Great, professional and friendly staff. We had a balcony cabin on eight deck. The cabin was worn but functional. The ship overall is showing its age. Worn furniture, faded and rusting and faded exterior surfaces outboard. Several things not working throughout the ship. Ice machines and juice vending in the aft end of the buffet were not working or not serviced. The fountains and evening light display in the enclosed pool area were never on. The passengers were much younger than I expected. Lots of 20-30 year olds keeping the ship lively and fun. Very few small children and families. The buffet and MDR were good but anytime dining was a bit dissapointing with long wait time and atmosphere. All this being said the ship was really fun and a great value for the money. The ship is going into a major modernization in 2027 so all the material shortcomings should be resolved.
