Ship Reviews

I think most of us know the basics. I will summarize: The itinerary is an interesting one, just what my wife and I wanted for a post-holiday warmup diversion. Celebrity provides this, and more ( specifically a very interesting Aqua Clara Locks transit). These locks provided the only “new” mileage for our logbook as we have done the whole Florida-California itinerary and all of the ports of call that we stopped at have been well sight-seen and shopped out, so the Canal was the primary stop of interest. The Aqua Clara locks were worth the trip. Everything Celebrity said about them was useful. From where to look-what you will see, to the other excursions suggested, it was great. Now I will turn to other items- Celebrity is not the Summer Camp for kids as is much of the Cruising Industry out of Florida. Celebrity is delightful Summer Camp for Grown Ups complete with varied cuisine, theatrical shows, other lectures and presentations, and adult oriented water activities on the top deck, complete with a “no-charge” Solarium and pool and a delightful Spa-Cafe ( a secret weapon in minimizing weight gains while cruising). This was my first encounter with the “Infinite Veranda” on Celebrity Ships. Frankly I found the discussion interesting beforehand, amusing upon my return. It didn’t overly reduce my enjoyment of the sea, but it did offer more space in the stateroom. I can see how this certainly could be a surprise if you weren’t ready for it, but the result seemed fine to me. We were very well treated by all of the staff we encountered. The normal places (stateroom and restaurants) were deserving and received additional, direct gratuity. The notable outstanding service encounters were with Ushers in the Main Theatre and in a certain Logo Shop. After many sailings on smaller Celebrity ships, I was very pleased that the passenger experience on this “Big Sister” does not dilute the entire reason We choose Celebrity for our cruising needs (itineraries still matter) .

So you understand who I am because I feel the review is very different by stages in life. I am a 59 year old woman traveling with my 82 year old mom. This is probably my 30th cruise and I have cruised on all cruise lines. I travel a lot and very familiar with quality. Due to traveling with my mom we went much slower on this trip. I generally am in the water non stop and going non stop. Overall Celebrity caterers to an older crowd, I would say the cruisers were mostly older than me, I would have been very frustrated on this cruise if I brought my kids. I just finished a Viking Ocean Cruise and I felt the same age group was on both ships. Of course you can’t compare to Viking, but you are paying at least ½ the price of Viking. With that being said I was very impressed with the ship. The Ascent is a very new ship and it is beautiful. I believe they had 4000 passengers and I really didn’t feel that crowded on the ship, except trying to get into the 7:30 show. Getting on and off the ship was a breeze in my opinion. With Cruises I rate by the following categories: Itinerary: We went to the Panama Canal, just through the first 3 locks, turned around in the lake and came back out. This was a bucket list of mine and it did not disappoint. We almost were not able to make it through the locks due to weather and I think if we would have had any other captain they probably would have called it off. Captain Taos was a daredevil and quite a funny daredevil, he was pure entertainment. The other stops, Cartenaga, Aruba, Curacao and Grand Caymen were nice stops, but if you are not a water person there is not much more to see at these locations. But because it went to the Panama Canal I would rate this 10 out of 10 itinerary. The Room: We had a infinity balcony, which meant we really didn’t have a balcony, but we could lower a window which would give us a balcony. I really liked this concept, it made the room much larger. The room compared to their older ship was quite large. We had 2 twins put together (making a king size bed) and a couch that I am guessing could be made into a bed, although I doubt it would be very comfortable. We had a desk, a 3 drawer dresser, the closest was a nice size with ample hangers (it looked like the guest before us asked for more hangers). In the closet it had a safe and 2 shelves. It also had more shelves behind doors so it kept the room looking less cluttered. The bathroom was also quite large for a cruise ship, with ample shelf space for your sundries. The beds were comfortable, the cover was the European style with no sheet. They also provided 4 pillows, that were quite fluffy. They provide a USB plug in on one side of the bed and a couple plug ins at the desk with USB plug ins and C plug for European travelers. Do NOT bring any type of extension cord, even if it says it is cruise approved they will take it from you, they are scanning all luggage for these. I always bring magnetic hooks to hang up items and a shoe organizer to hang over the bathroom door to manage clutter. I would give the room a 10 out of 10 for the class of ship we were in. The food: Although I am not necessarily a foodie, I do prefer my food to be well prepared if I am going to eat it. We ate in the buffet for breakfast and lunch. They had a great selection and layout. The only place we had to line up for was the omelets that were ordered, otherwise you never had a line. They provided complimentary water, lemonade, ice tea and fruit punch. In the morning they had orange juice and I believe apple and cranberry cocktail. They of course provided complimentary coffee, hot chocolate and tea. To me the buffet was normal fare, nothing to get excited about, but not really complain. My only complaint was that they started running out of food by the end of a 11 day cruise, such as peanut butter, which really surprised me. You could also eat in other places complimentary for breakfast and lunch, but I did not eat there so I cannot comment on those places. The main dining was in 4 different dining rooms, we were assigned late dining which we did not want so we were able to go anytime. Due to this being a cruise catered to older people the line was long at 5:30, but went fairly fast. They will try to accommodate you for a table for 2, but will also put you at a shared table. The first 2 days was crazy slow, like over 2 hours to get your meal slow, so we complained at Guest Services and from there on the service was impeccable and speedy. They always provided 3 of the same meals each day, plus 3 daily meals, plus a couple meals specific to that restaurant and one Chef special. I found the food to be decent, but not outstanding. We did go to Le Petite one night (one of the specialty restaurants) and the food was exceptional at this restaurant, but it came with a $150 price tag for 2 people. My real complaint was the desserts, I don’t know why cruise lines don’t hire better dessert chefs, but I don’t think I have ever been on a cruise where the have been impressed with the desserts and I was not impressed with the desserts on this ship, which was probably a good thing for my waist line. As a side note we did get the non alcoholic drink package which provided bottled water, sparkling water, cans of soda (coke products), smoothies and non alcoholic drinks. I was impressed with the package, I never had to wait to get a drink and you do not tip the servers because it is already included in the price. I would rate the food 7 out of 10. Entertainment: Generally this is not a do or die for me on cruise lines, but always a plus. The entertainment was exceptional. They had 2 shows of the headliner show each night. They definitely are catering to older people, so be prepared for an older style of performance. They also provided speakers throughout the day which were quite entertaining and if you missed it you could watch it on your TV. I would rate the entertainment 9 out of 10. The Crew: Celebrity I believe treats their crew well. The crew members seemed happy, which was a difference from the crew on Norwegian. We saw our room steward all of the time and he was always so helpful and kind. The wait staff were very pleasant. The Captain was seriously the best captain I have ever experienced. I seriously would try to locate another cruise that he is the captain he was that good. Crew 10 out of 10.

My first time on an edge class ship. Ascent is a beautiful ship, very large with 16 decks. We travelled from UK staying overnight in Miami at the Hilton airport hotel. I must say the travel arrangements to the ship were excellent. We were picked up at the airport in a private taxi and next morning again in a luxurious private taxi. Getting onto the ship was quick and easy, all your information is on the app which you MUST download and once the details were checked we were directed to the gangway and we’re on the ship, took approx 15 mins in all. We were told our cabin would be ready at approx 1.30pm, so we kept our overnight luggage with us for an hour, however there was no announcement to say the cabins were ready, but having seen a number of people in swimming costumes round the pool and no obvious luggage we presumed the cabin would be ready, which it was. We were aqua class on deck 9 with an edge “balcony”. I wasn’t terribly keen at first on this arrangement, however it does make the cabin look bigger and on dull days it’s possible to sit and still enjoy the view without being too cold. However it’s not ideal since the window which opens to make the “balcony” can be taken over remotely and not work, which happened several times. Also when the window is open the air conditioning does not work. Also it’s not possible to sunbathe in this type of arrangement. The room storage is ok, there are lots of cupboards and drawers, but the hanging space in the wardrobe is ridiculously small. Too bad if you take a lot of dresses with you as the hanging space for anything longer than a blouse or trousers is very limited. The ship is beautiful with lots of artworks, mostly framed art photographs on the cabin corridor walls, with a different theme on each deck. In the public areas there was much figurative art, much of it abstract, one area in particular was very disorienting as it was a linking corridor with mirrored abstract artwork for its length. The centrum which is normally the heart of most ships was the Martini bar, which was very busy and very noisy as there were 3 levels plus usually music playing, often loudly. The heart of this ship is actually aft in Eden. This is a calm oasis filled with green plants and comfortable seating areas throughout. It’s on 3 levels with a restaurant in the lower area, which I was told was very nice, on the main deck was the seating and socialising area with comfortable seating and a cafe at lunch times which served a light lunch of sandwiches which were made to order as well as salads and sweet treats. There is also a bar. On the upper level is a seating area surrounding the rear of the shops, with comfortable seats and lounging areas which allow views from the rear of the ship. We spent quite a bit of time in Eden as it’s a truly relaxing and calm area. I liked the Oceanview cafe which is the buffet restaurant on deck 14. It is very well designed, with lots of bar style tables looking out over the ocean, we never, even on sea days, had to search much for a table. The food was good, plentiful and varied with at breakfast the usual scrummage for omelettes and eggs, The restaurants were good. Instead of the usual single large main restaurant on 2 levels at the rear of the ship, they have split it into 4. With 3 of the restaurants having a theme, one was French inspired (where we had the most delicious boeuf bourguignon) another was North African the 3rd was Italian. All were extremely nice, we never had a bad meal in any of them. We also as we were in aqua class had entry to Blue, which is a clean eating restaurant which we also enjoyed. The staff in all the restaurants were excellent. We didn’t take any of the tours offered by the ship, instead we would walk off and wander. The lower deck which they call the destination gateway is the best and most well organised disembarkation area I’ve ever experienced, on any ship no standing about on a chilly corridor waiting your turn to squeeze past your fellow passengers, this is a sophisticated and stylish exit and entrance. Other cruise lines really should take a lesson from celebrity. The sun deck was always busy as was the solarium, with the usual hogging of loungers, however it is possible to bag a lounger usually in the afternoon after lunch. The spa was lovely, we had entrance to the facilities which were excellent. The gym was also well equipped. The staff were all excellent, friendly and helpful. The shopping experience is very upmarket but I found the constant pressure to buy was annoying. The reason I’ve given this review only 4 stars is the disembarkation. We were instructed to be out of our cabin by 7.45am which we were and informed that when our turn arrived to leave we would be directed to our shuttle bus to take us to Miami airport. Miami was unexpectedly cold so with 3 gangways off the ship open to the elements it was very cold waiting to get off, not celebrity’s fault to be fair, the staff at the exits were clearly very cold. However once we did disembark, chaos ensued. No one as there to direct us to the shuttle bus, hundreds of people were milling about and we’d to guess which way to go as only private hire taxis and shuttles were touting for business at the exit. Thankfully we did go in the right direction and eventually spotted a sign for shuttle buses to the airport. When we got to the area the young woman directing passengers did not have us on either of her lists so I had to open my suitcase to find our transfer voucher which thankfully we’d printed off to give to her. When I did hand it over we were directed to a bus which frankly was not roadworthy. A number of the seats on the bus were so badly broken that the were unusable, in fact the only seat which was available for me I had to prop up as it could not sit upright. We got to Miami airport and despite being told by the dispatcher that we were going to the British Airways desks the driver delivered all the passengers to the very end of the terminal in the baggage area which had no signage to direct us to our area. Fortunately we did manage to find a member of staff who very kindly directed us to the correct area. The difference from when we arrived to start our holiday and when we were ending we’re polar opposites and frankly was stressful and totally disorganised.

This was by far was the best cruise we've ever taken! The Celebrity Ascent is a modern, sleek cruise ship with incredible elegance. From the professional staff to the amazing food we were blown away! Hats off to Celebrity! This was our first time sailing with Celebrity having sailed on many of the other lines, however Celebrity is a cut above the rest of the main stream cruise lines. I can't say a bad thing about our glorious trip. Even with the ship at full capacity we never hd to wait for a MDR table, a seat in the theatre a drink at the bars or a lounger on the pool deck. Our room attendants were amazing and all the waitstaff were fast, courteous and attentive. Our state room (porthole balcony aft) was perfect for our needs with plenty of room, and an amazingly large bathroom. Port days (5) were a nice mix of destinations. All in all a wonderful holiday!
