Ship Reviews

We have cruised on most cruise lines and this Miami to Caribbean Cruise came up at a really good price, so we thought lets give Cunard a try ! So glad we did, this was our very best overall cruise we have taken. We consider a good cruise based on 3 main ingredients Service food entertainment The Queen Elizabeth gets 10/10 on all 3 points. She is a beautiful ship, in all areas. we loved the fact that at no point was the ship too busy , you could always find a sunbed/chair , always get a table at the Lido cafe. We ate in the Britannia Main dining room, we loved our experience, always got a nice table for 2 which is our preference. Waiter service always good. Theatre nights were varied and very professional , plus the west end show Come from away which was amazing. Thank you Cunard we will b e back ....

This was a very enjoyable cruise overall. This was our first experience with the QE, although we have been on the Queen Mary 2 in the past. There were four of us, in two adjacent Brittania cabins. (Tip: The door between balconies can be opened by the steward -- both parties just need to ask!) The Brittannia cabins are good if you are looking for a mid-range price point with balconies and a sofa. The beds are comfortable, although we found the pillows way too hard (Note for next time: Bring our own). Storage space is efficiently designed, and the refrigerator and safe are handy to have. The shower is too small, so be careful you don't bang your elbows or head. Premium internet worked well throughout the cruise, even for videos (switching between devices was easy). We also had Verizon Cruise Pass (worked sometimes but not always) and Travel Pass (good service onshore). We activated wifi calling before leaving. (Tip: Heed the warning to switch to airplane mode when close to Cuba to avoid roaming charges). Having both CNN and BBC News is great for news junkies. Not sure who has time for TV movies on a cruise, but there were plenty of them available. The daily "Queen Elizabeth Today" program by entertainment director Michael Harvey and his team was very well done and a helpful guide for each day. Our steward was efficient but not chatty, which was fine. Probably the on-board highlight, and a pleasant surprise, was the entertainment. The full production of the hit musical "Come From Away" was exceptional and a welcome note of hope and unity in today's world (the passengers were about evenly split among Brits, Americans and Canadians. Most were older and easy to strike up a conversation with). Also good were singer/musician Dominick Allen, actress Sutton Foster, the UK 50s cover group The BlueJays, and hilarious (and clean) comedian Daryl Joyce. Among the lecturers, Roger McGuinn was a standout. He's a founding member of The Byrds and the man who made "Mr. Tambourine Man" a hit. Now 83, he provided insight into the folk music world of the 60s with a lot of old film clips and even performed a few songs himself. If you are fascinated by serial killers (apparently a lot of us are), forensic pathologist Norma Hollender-Celico is full of fascinating behind-the-scenes facts and trivia. The art presentations were all excellent. It was fun watching the dancers and listening to the orchestra in the Queens Room, and everyone should indulge in the Queens Room tea at least once. Moving on to dining, we took most dinners in the Brittannia main dining room. We had a good waiter who provided helpful suggestions and he also navigated the special-diet kitchen (low-sodium, sugar-free, etc) for us. There was plenty of variety on the menu and most of the selections were creative and tasty, although some of the fish was a little dry. Room service breakfast was somewhat disappointing: The food was warm, not hot, and there were not many a la carte choices. At least it was delivered right on time. Lido buffet breakfast, on the other hand, had an extensive variety of items. We were impressed with the array of fruit (both fresh and compote) and the freshness of hard-to-mass-produce items like French toast. The omelet station was a godsend, since the heatlamp eggs left a lot to be desired. The Golden Lion fish and chips meal was pretty good, and the grill by the Lido pool produces outstanding burgers. The Pavillion Pool is quieter than the Lido pool, but both were refreshing. The wooden steps to get in and out are awkard and uncomfortable to use (don't pools usually have plaster steps extending into the water so you can walk right in?). The islands were all beautiful, warm, sunny and interesting and the reisdents very friendly. Being our first time in the Caribbean, we took mostly Cunard's shore excursions and the quality was mixed. Some experiences (like the St. Nicholas Abbey and steam train on Barbados) were fun, but on other islands many of the stops were rushed or the views from the buses obstructed. Those who advise arranging your own tours or striking out on your own are correct. The QE is smaller than the QM2, so expect some rocking when in the open ocean. There are a lot of high-end shops and galleries, but also some more modest priced items in the boutiques. All of the QE staff were friendly and helpful. We did not use the spa. Embarkation was efficent and disembarkation a breeze. One annoyance was having to pack up our cabin and vacate it for a half day for the installation of a new a/c and thermostat (many other cabins were affected in the same way). Not sure why this wasn't done during last year's refit, and the "compensation" of a $15 drink coupon was hardly commensurate with the inconvenience (especially for those who don't drink!). Overall, though, the QE was a classy experience and something we hope to do again.
