Ship Reviews

We booked an Inside aft cabin deck 6. Cabin was in very good condition except for worn, grubby carpet. Sufficient wardrobe space.. Bed was very uncomfortable and both of us ended cruise with back pain. Lots of movement in aft cabin and would not book one again. We loved the inside cabin. Food was good and plentiful in Dining room and Lido. Pinnacle lunch was underwhelming. Server forgot our desert order. Guest services staff were not very helpful and were not truthful with information on holds on our cards. They debited my account with extra money and have held funds on my cabin mate’s card 4 days after we disembarked. My funds were released as I finalised my account pre disembarkation. The staff were not truthful about my cabin mates funds being held. We will not cruise with HAL again. Cunard were upfront about holds and funds were reverted a day post cruise disembarkation.

The cruise from the start had its ups and downs. Starting when they used the wrong picture for our onboard card after we told they they had . Our cabin had a fantastic balcony but being situated over the galley was not a good experience. The noise from the galley continued till after 10PM each evening and then started again in the early AM. Our fault totally for not realizing that it was underneath. The motion detector night light was terrible. just moving in bed would trip it and that would go on all night. Dinner in the MDR was good for the most part. We are not foodies so some of the food wasn't something that we would be impressed by. Some nights it came out just warm. The entertainment was very good and we really enjoyed the crew talent show. The excursions were hit and miss. We did 4 HAL excursions and only one we would say was really good.

This was a 9 Day Southern Caribbean and ABC Islands cruise. We were a little concerned because the dates of the cruise were during most of the schools Spring breaks We were worried there would be loads of kids but while there were kids on board, we didn’t see many of them. The embarkation was such a breeze! We basically just walked on! This is the best cruise we have had in quite awhile. I was beginning to believe our cruising days were over. This was our first cruise on Holland America but it won’t be our last! The Rotterdam is a beautiful ship and a perfect size. Normally the ships are so large I never make it past the atrium. We had a veranda cabin on the Schubert deck. I loved all of the storage the cabin offered and the bed was super comfy. The shower was larger than ones we had on our last cruises. Our balcony was actually large enough to sit on and not have my knees crammed up against the railing glass. Our cabin steward was the best we have ever had (we have cruised a lot) and it made such a difference to have someone smile and greet you like a long lost friend. He kept our cabin nice and neat and made sure we had fresh ice twice a day without having to ask for it. I love that Holland America still has nightly turn down service. I really missed that as most cruise lines have done away with it. It was great that room service didn’t cost to use it and the food was always good and hot when it arrived. We ate in the main dining room several nights and utilized the open dining time. We never had to wait to get a table whether we were sharing or just had a table for two. The food was excellent and the service amazing. We did usually eat lunch at the buffet which was very good but I am not a big lover of buffets. We ate in three of the specialty restaurants, the Pinnacle Grill, Canaletto, and Rudi’s Sel De Mer. Our favorite was the Pinnacle Grill but they were all good. The only place that we ate at that we didn’t care for was The Dive In. My husband said his hamburger was awful. I had a hotdog which was okay but the bun was too big and I didn’t like so much bread. The French fries were good though. We fell in love with the Grand Dutch Cafe and would go in the afternoon to get a Cappuccino and their delicious mini quiche (me) and a grilled sandwich (husband). We really enjoyed BB King’s, The Rolling Stone Lounge, and Billboard Onboard. We’re not gamblers so we didn’t spend any time in the casino. There was always something going on day and night but we like our quiet time on our balcony reading or watching a movie in our cabin. There were so many movies to choose from that it was hard sometimes to agree on one! We enjoyed our shore excursions especially the Bonaire Donkey Sanctuary. I just love donkeys! The only tour we weren’t crazy about was the Eco Lagoon tour in Half Moon Cay. It was very disorganized and rather boring. We missed our excursion in Curacoa because my husband was sick. We didn’t book an excursion in Aruba as we were just going to walk around the port. Where we docked was such a long distance to walk to get to the shopping area we just opted to stay on the ship. We had been to Aruba before so it was not a big deal for us. I assume we could have gotten a taxi to take us in to town but didn’t. Disembarkation was as easy as embarkation and we had a very short wait time. Overall this was just a great cruise and we are anxious to take our next one!

Overall - This is the newest ship in the Holland America line - everything is in excellent condition. The staff goes out of their way to be friendly and helpful - way above average! Our room stewards rank among the best we have ever had. Dining - We ate at Club Orange, the Pinnacle, Rudi's, Tamarind and Canaletto. The only disappointment was the Pinnacle. It is living on past glory - overpriced for what you get. It is priced above Rudi's, but Rudi's is much better. There is a surcharge for the Dover Sole but it is worth every penny. The Tamarind is also excellent - the Wasabi Tenderloin beats the Fillet Mignon at the Pinnacle by a mile. Half Moon Cay - We are looking forward to stepping off the ship onto the dock at Half Moon Cay on our next cruise. We have been told that the new dock should be completed in the next few months. Entertainment - Singer / Comedian Tricia Kelly was excellent; Ric Steel, who I had never heard of, was really good - he has been around forever, but hasn't lost a step.
