Ship Reviews

The boarding in Pireus (Oct 4th) was a big mess. Long lines with guests with luggage in the heat of the sun. The itinnerary was good esp. the 2 days stay in Malta en Istanbul. Crew was very good and enthousistic. Esp my stateroom att. Denie & Sigit. Captain Timmers with CD Taling and newcommer Alex were super. I experienced that the sfere of a cruise is too much dependent on which captain and CD a cruise does have. The Pinnacle restaurant service was very bad. 30 minutes waiting for my first glass of wine. Not enough attention for the guests. The food in the MDR has been upgraded. The entertainment in the theater was very bad (as always with HAL). The double cruise price for solo cruisers is a shame and feels that HAL waant to kick them out. The double paying solotravelers do pays for the free cruisers given to casino gamblers and jewelery buyers. The Dutch filmcrew on board and at the despinations were not announced: rude and not any notice that all guest do pay a lot of money to have their cruise vacation and do want their privacy. Shame! The ship is in good condition and clean.

Learned a huge lesson on this cruise. Ensure/demand/make it clear you do not want an "upgrade" if you have gone through the process of picking the right cabin for you. We embarked in Dover, England which was by far the quickest and easiest embarkation we have had in over 15 years of cruising. We learned that 600 people embarked in Dover, then the next day nearly 2000 embarked in Rotterdam. If you are looking for simplicity of embarking, Dover is the place from you. I timed it, from the time the taxi left our hotel (in Dover just used taxi due to luggage) to the time we had dropped off our carry on bags in our room and were sitting down to eat on the Lido deck was under 40 minutes. Fastest embarkation we have had by far. As we went through the embarkation we noticed something odd. The luggage tags we had printed out, just a few days earlier did not match the cabin number now showing up on my HAL app on my phone. When we went to the room on the app, we knew it was NOT the room we had booked as it did not have an obscured view balcony. We had been "upgraded." This upgrade was anything but. While it was on a higher deck and a clear view, it was right by the elevators. We hardly slept the first two nights. Due to embarkation in both Dover and Rotterdam, the movement of baggage trolleys made it sound like Grand Central Station. Probably worst first two nights on a cruise I have had. HAL could not tell us who or when our room had changed. Upon return home I received an email saying the room had changed. I have a feeling HAL could not sell the room, so moved us as an "upgrade" to resell our original room. This set us off on the wrong foot from the start, but in the end, overall it was a good cruise. A couple of things: 1) the HAL app is buggy, crashed often and frequently had conflicting information from what was on the daily written program or on the TV information display. 2) My wife and I have dietary restrictions. While HAL does a good job posting placards all over the Lido deck and marking menus with symbols for vegan, vegetarian, gluten free...etc, they did a terrible job of marking the foods correctly. Nearly everyday, I would see a dish that would look to be vegetarian or vegan but not marked as such. When the staff was asked they assured us it was either or, but it was not marked as such. There seemed to be great effort at alerting people to individual food allergens, but not to properly labeling food for certain dietary types. 3) Before departing we read where HAL had banned plastic reusable bottles on board, but you could bring metal water bottles. All of the water dispensers in the Lido had clear placards saying the refilling of personal water bottles is not permitted. No one paid attention to it and dozens if not hundreds of people carried plastic water bottles around the ship. What amazed me was that for 2600 passengers there was only one water filling station I could find and that was in the gym. Now on the good side the ship is new and in very good condition. We had read reviews saying that the food quality on HAL had declined since the pandemic. We did not find this to be the case. We went on a Viking River Cruise earlier this year and we were disappointed by the blandness and uninspired food. The food on HAL was exceptional. I had several different fish dishes and each were cooked to perfection. The cake and chocolate days were incredible with the various offerings. We did not go to any of the specialty restaurants as we were happy with the food included in the price of the cruise. The musical entertainment overall was very good. We have found we enjoy the larger ships that have a BB Kings Blues Lounge onboard. The entertainers contracted to the BB King lounge are generally a cut above. This cruise was no exception. The male and female performers were exceptional. The Rolling Stone band were good, the lead singer was very enthusiastic, but he had a strong southern "twang" when he sang so it took some getting used to. The two pianists in the Billboard Lounge were great. One was not the strongest singer, but they had great chemistry. The classical trio were good too. The regional soloist was the weakest link, tried to listen several times, but just couldn't do it. We went to a lecture and a cooking demonstration on the World Stage, both were very good. My wife went to one of the performers on the World Stage but walked out after three songs. We spent most nights at the BB King show. We did like that the ship offered a lot of different activities (origami, watercoloring, calligraphy, etc...). My wife went to the calligraphy and enjoyed it. I will also compliment HAL on the library on the Nieuw Statendam. Very room y and a good selection. The staff was the as good as ever. Our dinner waiter and assistant waiter were probably the best duo we have had in our 9 cruises with HAL. The standard of service has not declined at all. While we noticed several minor changes, it felt like HAL of old. If you haven't cruised HAL before, it is geared toward a more mature generation. The few children I saw onboard looked bored; not sure Iceland would be the most exciting to young children. While it had been years since we had been on HAL we now look forward to sailing with them again. If not for the change of the room and the first two sleepless days, this would have been an exceptional cruise.
