Ship Reviews

My Amateur Review of the Norwegian Jewel to Bermuda May 21-28, 2026 Embarkation: After hearing horror stories about embarkation in Philadelphia, I could not have been more impressed with the process on May 21, 2026, even in the pounding rain! I stayed at the Clarion the night before the cruise so all I had to do was take the elevator to the lobby level. At the front door of the hotel, there were porters taking luggage and loading immediately on to trucks to transport to the pier. I got in line to check in at 11:20 had my room key and was seated and waiting for the bus by 11:45. We arrived at the pier at 12:20 and they provided us ponchos as we got off the bus, walked the few steps into the tent and by 12:40 I was on the ship and finally sheltered from the rain. Lunch was in Tsar’s Palace where I was seated by 1:05 after checking in at my muster station. And then all cabins were ready by 2:30 and bags were delivered shortly after. Due to the rain, it was contested on the ship as most passengers were indoors instead of enjoying time on deck. I found the staff at the Clarion as well as the port staff to be helpful and friendly. Itinerary/Ports/Excursions: There were two ports on this seven day cruise - Royal Naval Dockyard in Bermuda and Charleston, South Carolina. The ship overnighted in Bermuda, so we had two partial days and a full evening. It would have been wonderful to have a third day so there was one full day. Bermuda was lovely, although the beach I visited did not have pink sand. Regardless, it was beautiful! NCL offers a complimentary ferry from the Royal Naval Dockyard to St. George’s. On the first day, it departed at 11:00 and again at 1:15. Having arrived at the ferry at 10:58, I was denied boarding and not wanting to wait until 1:15, I took the government ferry for $5.00. St. George’s is an historical area that is very walkable. One can see most of the historical sites in a walk just under a mile round trip from the ferry dock. The Royal Naval Dockyard is also very walkable and I understand there is a beach within waking distance. There were also minibuses that went to Horseshoe Bay. The Goslings Rum Sunset Cruise excursion was quite nice - a beautiful evening on the water tasting several rums and cocktails made with a variety of rums. On the second day I took the Waves and Caves excursion which started out with a narrated drive on the island from the Dockyard to Crystal Caves in the Hamilton Parish. The tour of the cave was less than 1/2 hour and then the tour continued to Clearwater Beach and the Cooper’s Island Nature Preserve, where we were able to spend about two hours. The excursion transported us to St. George’s to catch the NCL ferry back to the Dockyard. Because it was the first US port, in Charleston, we went through US Immigration on the ship. They called passengers by cabin decks and those with scheduled shore excursions were able to proceed in order to make their shore excursion times. From the time I got in line it took less than 15 minutes to get through immigration and proceed off the ship. Charleston port area was easily walkable and there were pedicabs for hire if passengers did not wish to walk. Cabin: An inside cabin on deck 9 met my needs quite well. There was plenty of storage - closets, drawers, and shelves. The two lights at the head of the bed each had a USB port. In addition, there was a USB port at the vanity area and under the TV. Under the TV there was also one US and one European electrical outlet. The vanity area had two US outlets and a European. It appears the bathrooms were redesigned during the recent dry dock facelift. The shower is rectangular, which makes it a bit larger than the round style I’ve experienced on other ships. Unfortunately, the finishes are suffering a bit - the faux marble walls are dented, the grouting around the shower and bathroom floor is chipping and dirty looking, and the soap dishes in the shower are rusty. Certainly not a deal breaker for me, but sad to see it looking so worn so soon out of dry dock. The bed is more comfortable than I’ve experienced on other NCL ships. A small irritant is that there was no way to turn off the cabin ceiling lights from the bed and another was that I had to open the cabin door to change the notice to “Do Not Disturb” rather than flipping the switch inside the cabin. Again - very minor - but different from what I was used to on NCL. They do play music in the cabin hallways which at times I could hear in my cabin. Dining: Two main dining rooms, Tsar’s Palace and Azura serve the same menu. Azura is much smaller than the Palace. I don’t recall what I ordered, but my meals were quite good. I dined at three specialty restaurants - Chin Chin, Le Bistro, and Moderno. As has been my typical experience on NCL, Le Bistro takes first place. Service and food quality were both top notch. I loved the salad bar and the lamb at Moderno. Both the filet and the flank steak were served more done than I prefer. Before dinner at Chin Chin I tried a Sake at the Sake Bar - it was served warmed which was new to me. I can not recommend Chin Chin. The service was not what I’ve come to expect at other speciality restaurants and the food was just so-so. Unfortunately, this was my last speciality dining experience on this cruise and it was not a good one. I grabbed breakfast twice at the buffet. I liked the layout with islands of food types rather than long steam tables. And it was nice to dine on the aft deck. I was not impressed with O’Sheehan’s - the service was quite slow, and the food was just OK. The ship in general: It took me a while to get accustomed to the layout, as several decks are broken up on one side or the other preventing you from walking through. Once I figured it out I was fine. Deck 7 is a promenade deck and you can walk completely around the ship. It is the only open deck, except for the pool and sun decks. There was no real seating on deck 7, although some areas had three or four wicker chairs which were stacked and not usable very early in the evening. I did see a few stacks of lounge chairs, but only saw them out and usable on the last sea day. The deck was frequently closed due to wind. Inside on deck 7 there were cushioned window seats available for inside seating. Something I never experienced on a ship was the “Bridge Viewing Room”. This was forward on deck 11 and allowed passengers to view the bridge as the staff was working. It was not a part of a tour. In this viewing room, there were also awards and gifts to the Jewel from other countries on display. Two pools were located mid-ship - one heated and one not. I had no difficulty finding an open lounger near the pool, however, there were many being saved that were never occupied in my time at the pool. Disembarkation in Philly: A Nightmare!!! The ship arrived in Philly before 6:00 am and they began calling those who walk off with their own bags before 7:00. We were asked to vacate our cabins by 8:00. I was one of the middle luggage tag colors expected to be called by 9:00. My color was finally called at 10:10 and I proceeded to deck 5 where we started forward and continued to the aft of the ship through the deck 5 cabin hallway. It took about one hour to get off the ship, collect luggage, and get in the line for the airport bus, and that was without customs and immigration (completed in Charleston). The line for passengers being transported back to the Clarion and their parked cars was easily five times as long as the airport line. Once on the bus, the driver went to the Clarion rather than the airport. Fortunately, just before we arrived at the hotel, a passenger on the bus informed the driver he was going to the wrong location and he turned around. It took about 30 minutes to get to the airport once on the bus at the terminal. Talking with port terminal employees, they said there were fewer busses today, due to a city event, and there were construction delays at both the terminal and the Clarion exit. If you are able, choose the self-assist option where you carry your own bags off or a very early luggage tag color. I wish I had taken advantage of the Latitudes departure perk. I do think today’s disembarkation delays had everything to do with the port terminal construction and is not indicative of NCL procedures in general. Overall impressions: I liked the size of the Jewel and the crew was excellent! I did not encounter long lines anywhere during the cruise itself. Three of the popular bars - Maltings Whiskey Bar, Shakers Martini Bar, and Magnums Champagne Bar - were all clustered together along the Deck 6 hallway creating some congestion, but the bartenders at all three were excellent. The entertainment was similar to other NCL ships I’ve cruised and I thought the Motor City show was particularly good. If the itinerary interested me, I would definitely cruise on the Jewel again.

There was quite a bit to do on the ship, just not at convenient times. Hard to understand the fitness center instructors when they show up for class. I was going to sign up for two class passes but due to language barrier, glad I only did one. Valeria was awesome as a solo cruise director. Brynne was good as a Cruise Director with the glow party, but she skipped out on her own birthday party. Matais was and is the best dancer on board, hands down! I ate at just about all of the specialty restaurants and was impressed with Le Bistro. I was impressed with NCL in that I was asked prior to dining if I wanted to use a dining credit. Most cruise lines do not do that. I was disappointed that I originally purchased More At Sea, only for NCL to turn around and charge hundreds more for Free At Sea with very similar amenities. Overall, I enjoyed the cruise and Francelle at Magnum’s drinks.
