Norwegian Star Reintroduced
If you think you know Norwegian Star, think again. Recently refurbished as part of The Norwegian Edge programme, the ship underwent extensive enhancements to its staterooms, public spaces, restaurants, bars and lounges.
Recently concluded a ten day day trip from Reykjavik to Southampton, UK. Went along with my spouse and had a balcony room on the tenth deck. Embarkation was a breeze in Reykjavik - got through it all in about 15 minutes. An official there noted that the Star was the first large commercial user of the terminal. Staffing at embarkation was more than adequate. We got on at about noon and had to wait until about 3:00 pm for our assigned deck to be cleaned. Going to the room, we found our room key would not work and had to go down with dozens of others to get the matter resolved. Seems like anybody who successfully bid for a cabin upgrade did not get a corrected key card. As noted we had bid for an upgrade from an ocean view to a family balcony. We bid $5 above the minimum and were subsequently told that we had been outbid. Jacked up the bid to $10 above minimum and just a few days before sailing, were told we got it. Looked at the booking website and saw about 20 or so balconies empty just prior to departure, so thought a low bid would do. It did. Later on found out the trip had about 1700 passengers making the ship about 3/4 full. The Family balcony was designed to sleep three, which seemed to give us plenty of room. Prior reviews seemed to focus on uneven food quality. We were quite fine with the Versailles main dining room finding the service quite good and attentive. We blew our four specialty restaurant credits there and had great steaks and lobsters as replacement meals for the standard menu items. Got served quite quickly and out of there in less than an hour most nights. The Freestyle system was quite convenient and we never waited more than a minute for an available table. Used the buffet on 12 for a few breakfasts and lunches. Standard stuff but more than met our expectations. Since ship was not at full capacity, plenty of seating available - a first for us! Sticking to the protocols, I never wore long pants and wore shorts every day. They didn't care and neither did I. We went to the casino quite a few times and routinely lost our entertainment budget. We had free drinks in the casino and they treated us quite well. Smoke did not bother us. Be forewarned - the ship's excursion fees are IMO quite expensive. It seemed like all off ship stuff was $229 to $399 per person. A bit of sticker shock for us. As such we used independent tour operators in Iceland to tour the various falls and paid about $75 each. Their guides were excellent and seemed to parallel the official offerings at a substantial discount. The Norwegian ports of call were tiny hamlets and limited excursion opportunities. In Maloy we just took a tourist styled "train" through town to see a church, a port, the new bridge and the six or seven blocks of the downtown. Not really much to see but it was inexpensive and whiled away some time. The two Scott ports also used local independent tour operators which were quite fine. The excursions to Edinburgh use a place called Queensferry a bit away from downtown. However there was a bus service - 99X Cruiselink waiting about 50 feet from the pier that took us downtown in about a half hour. From there we took a Hop on/ Hop off bus around town. Quite nice and exceptionally inexpensive. Note that this port requires a tender which on the day we went was quite rough and the boat smashed into the dock repeatedly. Regardless we made it without anybody getting hurt. Disembarkation was also a breeze. The ship gets into Southampton quite early and we were off the ship before 8:00 am. No fuss, no lines. Took a cab to the Southampton Central train station for 8 pounds. Then waited about ten or fifteen minutes for a SW train to Clapham Junction - a two hour trip. At Clapham Junction you can either take an Uber or another train to Gatwick airport. All in all, a nice trip, somewhat plenty to see and if you do your homework, you can save quite a bit of money going it with independent operators.
