Norwegian Star Reintroduced
If you think you know Norwegian Star, think again. Recently refurbished as part of The Norwegian Edge programme, the ship underwent extensive enhancements to its staterooms, public spaces, restaurants, bars and lounges.
We had a great pre holiday cruise on the Star out of Tampa. The ship was nicely decorated for the holidays with trees, gingerbread houses, garland etc. It added to the festive experience. Staff wore Santa hats and one night the chefs all paraded through the Versailles dining room with Santa. Lots of families dressed up and had photo's take in the atrium which was fun to watch. We booked this mainly to relax and be catered to prior to the holiday week. We are a couple in our 60's who like the Jewel class ships and particularly the aft suites. We were in a corner balcony on the 9th deck that wrapped around which allowed for great viewing. It did have 2 lounge chairs sideways and 2 tables. The only area that really is lacking is the bathrooms compared to the other suites. They are overdue for an upgrade. The food exceeded expectations. We ate in Moderno for breakfast and Cagney's for lunch being in a suite. This was a huge draw for us when booking. The fruit in the breakfast buffet was amazing and fresh every day. The smoked salmon, pastries, yoghurt, cereal, oatmeal etc were enough for us but they always provided us with hard boiled eggs on request. The menu had the usual suspects of eggs benedict, avocado toast, waffles, pancakes etc. Lunch had appetizers, soups, salads, entrees and desserts every day. Great fish sandwich! As for the main dining rooms we ate in Versailles twice and Aqua once and no complaints. That said, the service and options in Le Bistro and Cagney's were outstanding. The lamb at Cagney's was frankly extraordinary. We didn't use the garden cafe except for water, coffee and yes and ice cream! The bar at the Garden Cafe had great staff. Having priority embarkation and debarkation was truly beneficial for us and we roll on board with our luggage in hand. The other plus is having priority seats for the shows. We attended 2 and one of the comedians and it was top notch. We've been to Key West before so we booked the Lighthouse on our own in advance and that was perfect since we were only in port 7-3. Our Great Stirrup Key day turned into a Freeport Bahamas day due to wind so I took advantage of a managers special in the spa and got a great 75 minute massage for $139 but of course there was a $20 upsell for an eye zone mask but it was still a good value. The military cocktail party was truly a highlight for us. As a veteran, we receive a 10% discount on all cruises. The party is frankly a bonus! The entire ships senior staff was there to welcome and thank us for our service. One of the ships security officers where was a veteran of the marines in Great Britain spoke to us of his experience in service. Then we got our group photo taken and individual photo with our family & spouses. They were delivered to our room the next day and were a great keepsake. The butler left us treats and snacks every day. The concierge got us on and off the ship as promised and verified an errant charge (she ensured it had been removed) prior to us leaving the ship. I will say in 22 years this was the first time that we had a billing error. Overall, we were very happy. After reading other reviews we were worried about the food and ship condition. There were some issues with the toilets but we heard someone flushed a diaper and that was the culprit. The minor toilet outages didn't disrupt our enjoyment. We saw both stellar sunrises and sunsets, relaxed on our deck, loved the hot tubs in adult only Spice H2O and watching football in Proof. The mudslides from O'Sheehan's were spot on. So if you are thinking of a suite on the Star and like 3 gorgeous meals served on tablecloths every day, go for it! We were not disappointed.
