Ship Reviews

It was everyone in my groups first time cruising and we had a blast. The crew was amazing, everyone was so kind and helpful and it felt like they were all happy to be there. Service was quick, and the ship felt clean. I felt like they had everything organized super well. As first time cruisers, we were worried about being confused but everything was super easy and accessible. For example, we figured out how the free 150 minutes of wifi worked very easily. Our room steward was always easy to find and let him know if we needed anything. He would call us out by name whenever he saw us and it made us feel very cared for. The dining was also great. All the service workers made us feel special and important while we were dining with them, at both the specialty dining and the complimentary dining. If I had to complain about something, I would say that I wish the ice cream at the buffet was better, it just wasn’t that good. And the deserts at the restaurants were a little too fancy for me (I’m picky with desserts). Another thing is when there was bad weather they closed down the ropes course and I wish they did a better job of communicating when things were closed so I don’t waste time dressing properly for it and then not being able to do it. But those are just little things and I still feel like overall my experience was 10/10 amazing.

Embarking despite the terminal being refurbished was fairly easy (10am slot) One line for Haven, priority paid boarding and then every one else. After we received our key cards, we went to the waiting area. My group was sapphire and CAS, so we boarded with accessibility cruisers. On ship before 11. Straight to muster, cruise next and O’Sheehans. The ability to book shows was not an option on this cruise. Everyone had to stand in line, 1 hr prior. With 4,000 people that was not a good idea for the ship to do. However, they were very good at helping seat people. MDE can no longer be pre booked either. This created long lines in hallways when dining venues opened. All 3 MDE’s were very good, staff excellent. Burn the Floor, Rumours and Red, White and British are incredible shows. The Skyy Vodka ice bar is well worth the $15, but the drinks are not so tasty. The piano entertainment at Shakers… top notch. Try the Rum Cake martini. Delish. We had a balcony on deck 12. Very clean and roomy and our steward was incredible. We saw him every day. I do think they are overwhelmed and do miss the turn down service at night. I did the ship tour. Well worth it. Le Bistro, Cagney’s and La Cucina never disappoint. The French onion soup, escargot, prime rib, pizza, cannolis yummy.. The french onion soup in the MDE’s terrible. The lava cake dessert no longer lavas. Big disappointment. The weather didn’t cooperate, so the hot tubs should have been a little warmer. Why the ship is going to Halifax instead of the 3 days in Bermuda is beyond me. I feel 4,000 people are a bit too many for this ship. It was crowded in most restaurants and venues at all times. The crew did do a decent job adjusting to entertainment to please people because of the weather. The casino was the absolute worst of any I have been in. The machines were tight. Hardly any positive action. The drinks were good. They need to stop pushing the cruise next so much. Lower the price for onboard messaging. Not everyone wants the wifi to just keep intouch with who they are on board with. And paying per day is outrageous. Bring back free popcorn at movie time. We watched Maverick and Anaconda from the balcony seats in O’sheehans. Debarkation was a breeze. Chose the brown luggage tags 9:30 time. Left cabin at 8, buffet until color called. Facial recognition for customs while on the ship. Off ship by 10. All in all, amazing cruise.

This was our first time on the Breakaway, we read the negative reviews and were apprehensive. We have done this cruise many times on the smaller ships out of Boston, in balcony cabins, and the Haven. We decided to book the Haven for this cruise and we are glad we did. It started with embarkation. We were reminded at least three times by e-mail to show up at the time on our boarding pass, and that it would be checked. Since there was construction going on to enlarge the terminal, we would be checking-in in a tent outside. We arrived at our correct time and dropped off our luggage in the usual location. There had to be at least 2000 people in a line that zig-zagged the entire length of the terminal at least 3 times. No one was checking if you showed up at your correct time. Haven crew members, butlers, concierge staff all were walking around with Haven signs you had to find them yourself. Someone in line told me about them when she heard us talking about the priority line.   I left my husband and friend in line and went to a port staff and asked them. They found them for us, and directed them our way. The port workers were great, they kept the whole thing together.  The Haven crew were also excellent, and got us into the tent and in the priority line. Inside the tent there was another long zig zagging line as well.  We were able to skip that also. About 30 minutes later we exited the tent and met another Haven representative who walked us through a back area to the familiar escalator to go upstairs to security. There was another very long zig-zag line all around the upstairs area, hundreds and hundreds of people, no skipping this line. It took another hour and were finally headed on to the ship. I would be curious to know if they found all the Haven guests in the huge crowd. Hopefully they will refine this as the weeks go by.  After being scanned on the ship we headed in to find our muster station. Along the way we were approached constantly by crew members selling everything from photo’s, wine tastings, spa treatments, specialty restaurants . . . I have never experienced such an onslaught. We were with a friend a first time cruiser who was not in the Haven so after the muster check in we decided to eat at Savor rather than deal with the crowd in the Garden Cafe. We were given a beeper and waited about 30 minutes. Frankly we were exhausted. We had a good meal in the restaurant, and our cabins were open by then. After the usual unpacking and settling in, and taking a walk around we thought we would try the Noodle Bar for dinner figuring the main dining rooms would be busy, and it had good reviews. The seating was on stools, and the food was similar to the Asian restaurants on the other ships, but not as nice an atmosphere. Being next to the Casino it smelled of smoke and it was open to the high traffic area. We did not return. The Haven was quite an oasis from the busy noisy over crowded conditions on the rest of the ship. We enjoyed our Penthouse cabin on Deck 15, the lounge and restaurant were up a Haven stairway right across from our cabin. We enjoyed breakfast in the restaurant, and tried most items. The service and atmosphere could not have been better, Eugene our waiter was excellent in every way. The concierge Omar was friendly and helpful, along with his assistant Laura. We really appreciated the reserved seats in the theatre. We were escorted there by the concierge staff for each show and had great seats. Our Butler BJ, brought us breakfast a few mornings too. He was very helpful with snacks we requested, mixed nuts, cheese and crackers and of course cookies. Renato our steward could not have been better, he came when we were not there and was always around to say hello and answer questions since the ship was so new to us. I organized a Meet and Greet that was well attended by guests and staff, thanks to all that came to the event. The event co-ordinator was right on top of everything so easy to work with. I can’t say enough about the wonderful crew and staff on the Breakaway, they could not have been more pleasant and helpful. The Garden Cafe was a pleasant surprise, we never had trouble finding a seat, and the food was excellent. We did miss the Great Outdoors, the aft area is completely enclosed on this ship. The food all over the ship was outstanding. We were able to get reservations at Cagney’s before we boarded and had a great meal. It was not easy to get reservations anywhere once we were on board. We did get into LeBistro, but we were by a window facing the walking area, not as nice an atmosphere on the smaller ships. The food and service were the same. This cruise left me with questions ??? Who designed this ship ? Each venue is open to the next, or intertwined with walking areas resulting in smoke from the Casino everywhere. The smoking area is next to the kids pool area, a terrible idea. The over crowding is overwhelming. The water slides take up a huge amount of space and are not open that often. There lots of bars, and music venues all of them really small for the number of people on the ship ? We never went to any of them because we were not willing to stand in long lines, and the lines clog up the walking areas around the venues too. Why is the Atrium used for most activities ? It creates a chaotic area in the center of the ship, ruining the events themselves because you can’t hear, or sit down. We went to the Q&A with the dance team. We got there early and found seats, but not together. This is usually held in the theatre where you can sit and hear them. We missed the Q&A with the ships officers, it was inexplicably held on the very first day early in the morning when we had changed time zones. Again it is usually held in the theatre later in the trip here it was in the Atrium. We wonder how it went ? In addition to a constant stream of trivia and games all making for amplified noise constantly in this area, right next to the desks for information of all types. Not only is it hard to hear, but now add lines to this area that is usually a crossroads for getting around the ship. O’Sheehans which is usually open to the Atrium on this ship also has a walking area right down the middle of each side. It is one of our favorite restaurants, it was always very busy and just too hectic to enjoy. It is also right next to the open Casino, smoke again. The Spinnaker Lounge is sorely missed on this ship where you can find a quiet place to sit during the day, and activities held there are relaxed and enjoyable. Why is the theatre a bit smaller than on the Jewel class ships, for a ship twice as large ? We were in the Haven we had reserved seats, other wise you would have to get there early and wait in a long line for a seat. The entertainment was outstanding, we enjoyed all the shows we went to, Burn the Floor, Rumours, and Red White and British. Also not to be missed was the Crew Talent show. I did not see an empty seat at any of these, did everyone get to see them ?? Why is the interior of the ship mostly brown ? An unfortunate color for a cruise ship. Even in the Haven hallway, the rug was a black and brown pattern and the walls brown, ugh! Even our cabin also mostly brown, so dreary. We have been taking the Boston to Bermuda cruise off and on for 20 years, 15 times total. Always a wonderful trip. The Haven is a great experience, but leaving it put us on a ship that is noisy and crowded all the time. I feel like NCL has moved on from it’s older loyal guests, who are not comfortable on the Breakaway. We are going to give it another try, living just outside of Boston makes this an easy embarkation point. It is hard to give that up, and getting to Bermuda each year. Time to use our Cruise Next credit.
