The better-than-new Insignia blends sophistication with a contemporary flair to create a casually elegant ambiance that embodies the most treasured elements of our celebrated ships. Every surface of every suite and stateroom is entirely new, while in the public spaces, a refreshed color palette of soft sea and sky tones surrounds a tasteful renewal of fabrics, furnishings and lighting fixtures that exquisitely encompasses the inimitable style and comfort of Oceania Cruises.
Overall it was a great 12 days at sea. While there were some very positive experiences (such as the guest performers) my review will focus on the shortcomings of Oceania so that hopefully they will make improvements in these areas. We definitely compared it to Azamara, which we sailed last year on a similar itinerary. We prefer Azamara for everything except the actual stateroom, on which Oceania has done a fantastic job with making an old ship look shiny and new. :) Our first impression was negative, because they start dividing everyone into "classes" at check-in. They called everyone by their suite category, starting with the most expensive. So those of us who were in "regular" staterooms, were left sitting there waiting. Check-in times don't matter - just how much you paid for your room. While the ship is beautiful and the staff are extremely friendly and helpful, we didn't think Oceania lived up to the hype, especially with regards to the food. The food was definitely good, but there were some weird things that made it less than the "finest cuisine at sea". The biggest problem is their lack of labeling. Allergens aren't noted on the menu nor on the foods in the buffet, so if you have an allergy, you have to find someone to ask about every item in the buffet, every day, because they change everything daily. Often something would be labeled with ingredients there were not present (example: tag says arugula salad, but it's made with romaine OR salad tag says it has grapes, but it doesn't). One day, there was a tag above the salad ingredients that said "no sugar added cookies". So the employees seem to often ignore the labels that they had placed there. Another weird example is that I like to add honey to my yogurt in the morning and my tea in the afternoon. NEVER in any location was the honey available without asking someone to find it for me. The final negative I'll mention is where we docked in Curacao. We had an overnight there, which was exciting - to get to wander back and forth, on and off the ship, throughout a 2 day period. Except they put us in the worst possible dock location, about a 20 minute walk from downtown, through a sketchy area. So it put a serious damper on being able to walk on/off for those 2 days - it was too far to enjoy the port. And they didn't provide a shuttle service, which I thought they would do in a situation like this! Overall, we had a good trip and would consider Oceania again for the right itinerary. However, it's impossible not to compare to Azamara, especially since it's the same exact ship. Azamara does such a better job with the food and by far exceeds Oceania with activities and entertainment.
