Ventura

The fun all-rounder

Perfect for families, Ventura has so much to enjoy. Kids (and big kids) love her video game arcade; the sports arena keep everyone happy (competitive streaks aside!) with football, basketball, tennis and archery; and the comedy and quiz nights in Havana and The Tamarind Club are fun for all the family.

Ship Reviews

The Ventura tried to be all things to all people and, to some extent succeeded. The Ventura seemed to be well geared up for a variety of people including families, couples, the elderly and those with mobility problems (including those who don’t describe themselves as disabled but cannot walk for long distances) but the lack of shuttle buses at ports (and lifts not working properly) let it down. In fact there was only one port that had a shuttle bus and that was not mentioned in Horizon (What’s On guide) so many people didn’t know about it. There were lots of things for families and children to do and people of all ages. It is a family-friendly ship but not overrun by over-excited badly-behaved children like some P&O ship(s). It seemed clean. Most of the staff we encountered were friendly and efficient. There was an extremely varied programme of entertainment for most tastes, generally to a high standard. We ate all our evening meals in the formal (waiter service) restaurants. The booking system for the formal freedom dining restaurants (ie not fixed dining) didn’t always work as well as it should (with the system throwing people out of the queue for no apparent reason) but once there, the staff were very welcoming, efficient and helpful. Meals were served quickly but without rushing us to get out. The buffet items for breakfast, lunch and late night snacks were often on the cool side but this is a common problem with buffets. There seem to be two distinct buffet systems, one were you had to queue up to get to the buffet and follow everyone around in a line even though you didn’t necessarily want the part people were queuing for and the other one where there was a central island which allowed people to go to just the part of the buffet they wanted which was much more efficient and, particularly at busy times, allowed people to get what they wanted and away from the buffet quicker. One lift didn’t work at all for the duration and later on there were three lifts that didn’t work and one which wouldn’t stop at deck 9. There wasn’t a particularly interesting range in craft beers like there used to be on P&O ships but the drinks were fairly reasonably priced. I know not everyone is interested in craft beers but we did see a few people from the ship in ports in out of the way craft bars so we know there is a demand for it. We generally managed to get into the theatre when we wanted to. We had to get to there in good time for the 8.30pm slot but that was better than having to book and people not turning up for the times they have booked as unfortunately happens on some P&O ship(s) we have been on. It is a fairer system on the Ventura – whoever turns up first, gets the seats! The ship had a full promenade unlike some P&O ships. Overall we had a good holiday. I guess there are always niggles. Most of the staff tried very hard but it is a shame the little things let it down.
