Ship Reviews

Have cruised several cruise lines, but our first time on Princess. Have been to all of the stops on our itinerary before but enjoyed them just the same. We had dinner in one of the main dining rooms each evening. The selections were varied each night and I like to order things I would never try at home. I never ordered anything that I didn't enjoy. From fish to steak, sides and deserts. The food was great. Breakfast was at the buffet or in the dining room if we were up early enough. Buffett offerings were all you could want. Burgers made to order by the pool were very good. Our serving staff for dinner was excellent. Head waiter Zosimo was a gentleman with a great sense of humor. His assistant Armondo was all smiles and very friendly. The dining room manager Vasco stopped at our table often and was friendly, funny and a gentleman. The first morning we at at the dining room we had Edwin as our waiter and we made sure we sat in his area each morning after. He had a great sense of humor and a very positive attitude. Our favorite bar tender was Red at the Wine Bar. His service was one step ahead of you all the time and he was a lot of fun to talk to. The only negative to our trip and complaint against the staff was the lack of wait staff around the main 2 pools. The lines at the 2 bars were always long because the staff was almost non existent. Even on days at sea, and our cruise had 2 of those, there was one waiter per pool taking drink orders. I didn't pay for the drink package but if I had I would have been even more upset with this lack of service. The ship is older. Things were very clean for the most part. If you want a shinny new up to date ship, this isn't it. We had an interior room and our only complaint was a lack of outlets to charge things and plug in hair dryers. There were no plugs by the night stands for our bed. The entertainment was very good, better overall than most other cruise lines I've been on. From the singers, dancers and comedians we were always entertained. At breakfast one morning, at the buffet, we sat next to a young couple. We talked with them for quite a while and found that they were the aerobatics act for our cruise. Omar and Valeria are from Mexico and they are the nicest people and even more impressive athletes.

We are experienced cruisers having done about a dozen cruises on different lines. This was a 12 night cruise to the Caribbean. We arrived the day before embarking because we come from the west and the time difference is difficult. Embarkation was very easy, maybe 20 minutes in the green line at 11:00 am from drop-off to the bar on deck 7. We spent two days at sea going to Bonaire then worked our way back to Fort Lauderdale. We were in a mini-suite on the Dolphin deck, in the aft section. This was our first mini-suite and we quite enjoyed the extra space and the larger balcony. The room was nice and comfortable. We were unclear about the status of the balcony when we booked - uncovered, partial cover or fully covered. It was totally open so when there was rain or intense sun we couldn't use it, and we spend a lot of time on the balcony staring at nothing hoping for an occasional flying fish or other sea creature. We learned we prefer a covered balcony. The ports were good, although Guadalupe seemed a bit sketchy, and we did not have an excursion there, just wandered. We did Princess excursions at most ports that were informative and fun. The guides were excellent. The ship itself shows a little wear but is in great shape. The maintenance crew seemed to be constantly at work and never in the way. We used the walk-in dining. The dining room service was excellent. The food was consistently good, but there were a few dishes that were so-so. Our waiters made good recommendations and seemed to know what was best. We liked the smaller portions so we could enjoy an appetizer, main dish and dessert without feeling over-stuffed (I'm a guy and my gut tends to grow a "cruise baby" if I eat too much. One of the waiters told me it wasn't a cruise baby but a "one-pack"). The pizza, burgers and hotdogs were high quality when we missed a lunch or needed a snack, and the International Cafe was always available with sandwiches, snacks, soup, and dessert. We also like the diversity of foods offered at the buffet. It seems even the pickiest of eaters should be satisfied. The staff and the service was superb, some of the best service we have had from the room steward, to the waiters, to the bartenders. One bartender remembered us, learned our names and greeted us (maybe we went there too much). We particularly like listening to the musical entertainment which was very diverse with very talented musicians. We did not go to the theatre shows. The ship was quite crowded making it difficult to find a seat unless you arrived early. We seemed to eat between shows and could never make it when seats were available. Disembarkation was unusually easy for us, except our luggage was not in the designated zone so we had to look around for it. My wife bought a piece of jewelry that required us to go through customs. We were escorted there which meant we jumped the exit line, met a nice customs officer and exited the terminal, all in about 10 minutes. So buy something that goes through customs for a quick exit. The bottom line is that we enjoyed another great cruise, our third on Princess. We are not overly critical because our guiding philosophy is that any day on a cruise is a good day.

This was our first Princess cruise, after having sailed Celebrity (3) and Holland America (1). We were impressed even if the Caribbean Princess is one of the oldest ships in their fleet. As an overview, we were impressed with how finely she has been maintained. The decor is older, as to be expected, but it was comfortable and well taken care of. The ship itself was spotless. Embarkation was an absolute breeze and it will be hard to go back to key cards after using the Medallion system. As someone who has worked in IT for more than 15 years, this experience was rock-solid from a tech perspective. We never had a single instance of the medallion not working through this 12 day cruise. We had our first Inside cabin (forward) after having verandas in our other cruises. The room was efficiently designed and yes, the automatic light near the closet was annoying when you got up at night to use the bathroom :D . However, I am literally going to be buying myself one of their pillows because that bed was heaven! I wanted to pack it all up in my suitcase and take it home. Our room steward, Rashid, was excellent. Friendly, unobtrusive, always willing to help. The shower did have a shower curtain, but it was a heavy one and we never had any issues with it flying away or sticking to our legs. The Lido deck had its share of chair hogs, as to be expected. I loved having multiple pools to choose from. I wish they had more lounge chairs in the shade versus the tables/chairs they have. However, the tables and chairs were always in use by people enjoying a game of cards or a table game, which was nice. The gym had excellent equipment and was always clean. I suggested to Princess they have some yoga/exercise mats outside in the main gym itself and not just in the class space. I wanted to do yoga quite a few times and timed it badly so I got there when there was always a class in session. I did use the Service at Sea to order a snack and a drink and they found me without issue. The key here is that you actually have to go to your Cart and check out for the order to be placed. Some folks I was sitting near were having issues until they realized this. Meals were great - good variety of food and consistent standards. We ate mostly in the buffet and the food was always hot and fresh. Dining room service for the three times we ate there was attentive but not obsequious. The one thing I did suggest to Princess in our after-cruise survey was for areas inside the ship to be available that did NOT have any music playing., even if for a small period of time in the morning. The only place we could get away from background music (live or otherwise) was out on the Promenade. Skywalker's Lounge would be the most perfect spot for this from 8:00am-12:00pm. We were up there multiple times and it was hardly used, it seemed. Also, what a cool lounge! What a view! My husband is a musician and was blown away by the quality of the musicians in the house band and also their main party band, Xcite (from Trinidad-Tobago). Really top notch, excellent artists. We had a great time listening to them. Valerian, in the bar in back of the buffet (Oceanview!? I can't remember), was wonderful and created a drink for my husband that was spicy like he likes them. It was basically a margarita with a muddled jalapeno and no sugar. My husband was over the moon! :D The Caribbean Princess is my husband's new favorite ship and we won't hesitate to sail with them again. We already put a deposit down. :) We didn't go to any of the theater productions, mostly the music in the bars/lounges.

This is an older ship. For the most part, it is well maintained. We’ve found across the fleet, very professional and personable staff. I’d say Princess does that right! Embarkation was a breeze. We were on the ship by 11. We went up to the sanctuary to book lounge chairs. $40/pp per day or $20/pp half day. Btw- if you change your mind, you can switch from whole day to half day. Not every chair is in the shade but there are groupings of tables and chairs for all to use in the shade. Service is great! You can order drinks. They also have a dedicated spa menu. I highly recommend the grilled shrimp with white cannelloni bean salad or the chicken fattoush salad. The chairs have plush cushions. The pool (adults only) is 1 set of stairs down. They also serve afternoon tea with sandwiches and pastries. The Caribbean princess has lots of nooks and crannies on the decks with lots of lounge chairs although you may have to search them out. People were annoyed with the reserving of chairs. I don’t blame them. The MDR for was good. Not as good as on the Royal though. I noted that people would make “off the menu” requests like branzino on the dorado day or escargot when it wasn’t on the menu. These requests were fulfilled. So if you feel like something different (not filet or lobster tail) - ask for it. You just might get it. We thought planks was ok. Steamers: order the mussels. The clams were so small I couldn’t find them. We did pay the upcharge for the lobster tail and crab claw - with tax about $14/pp. It would be nice if they provided wet ones for your hands. Neither restaurant was crowded. Service in the MDR was pretty good, albeit uneven. We also had a breakfast and a 3 lunches there. Lunch on Embarkation day is very good. We had a balcony room. The balcony rooms lack the small sofa found on other ships. Excellent storage. Great cabin Steward - Marvin. I asked for a robe and it was plushest princess robe I’ve very received. Wish I could have taken it home! We had the plus package. Totally worth it IMO. I do think they make “light” drinks. Ok with me. I paid around $4/per glass of wine for a better wine. With the exception of the red blend, plus package wines are dismal. The casino was ok. Kinda smoky. Wish they had more card games. 3 out of the 4 comedians in the Fusion lounge were outstanding! The 3 production shows we saw with Princess singers and dancers were also excellent. We always got to the Princess theatre early as it is a smaller theater and we wanted to be sure we got a seat.
