Ship Reviews

This was our first sailing with RCYC. We opted to sail from Rome to Malta and back, and then a second leg from Rome to Barcelona. THE GOOD: We were pleased with our well appointed grand suite. Our suite ambassador & junior attendant were exceptional in ensuring every request was tended to greatly enhancing our sailing experience. The restaurant options met expectations, however it was Memori and Beach House that kept us coming back. Memori offered excellent Asian-inspired offerings and Beach House offered excellent Peruvian inspired cuisine. Staff throughout the sailing was exceedingly courteous and friendly. THE BAD: The ridiculous "stairs to heaven" to board the ship was comical but would pose serious difficulties for individuals with mobility issues. Alternative access should be considered as this is just a disaster waiting to happen. Excursions were limited and lackluster. The tender to Amalfi was a nightmare as 1.5+ hours delays cut into excursion time and the subcontractor vessel used to tender guests was substandard with crew smoking and vaping. OVERALL: The Ilma being a brand new yacht impressed us along with its friendly staff. Will consider more sailings in the future with RCYC.

I was recently on Ilma's second voyage out of Rome to Malta and back. The Ilma is Ritz Carlton‘s latest addition to their fleet, which is now two yachts, the Evrima and the Ilma. The Ilma is a beautiful new ship slightly larger than the Evrima. It’s beautifully appointed and our particular room a Signature Suite was very well designed with lots of storage, the ability to close off the bedroom area from the living room to create two separate sleeping areas. The suite has an amazing bathroom with two sinks, a huge walk-in shower, and a tub. The balcony is extra large. The staff on board are very friendly, extremely nice, always happy and always wishing you a good morning or a good afternoon. However, there are a few minor issues. While the people working in the restaurants are very nice, nothing ever seemed to go quite as planned. Whether it’s certain dishes not being available, or orders getting mixed up, or coming out at different times. Part of the problem is they all have to do their ordering through some sort of iPad which none of them seem to have a really good command of. I will say, the quality of the food in all of the restaurants is excellent. The other thing I’ve noticed is there is a bit of a pitch to always sell something on board. When I inquired about the modestly priced Italian wine tasting, I was immediately being sold on the $2,500 per person French wine tasting. On the day of our embarkation, a huge storm rolled through the port. The staff did a great job trying to keep us dry as we walked up the gangway. They got soaked.

Choosing this yacht for our holiday was a strategic decision, particularly because we had friends who had consistently refused to join us on any form of cruise. Determined to find an upscale alternative, we chose this yacht, which ultimately cast its enchanting spell on all of us. A Rocky Start in at the Port Our journey began in Tuscany, where we were enjoying a holiday before embarking on our yachting adventure. We opted to drive to the Civitavecchia Terminal, expecting a seamless transition from land to sea. However, our expectations were quickly dashed. We learned, much to our dismay, that private vehicles were not permitted to drop off passengers or luggage directly at the port. Only taxis were allowed entry, creating an immediate logistical headache. To compound matters, there was no representative from the yacht company, Royal Caribbean (R-C), at the port to assist us. This oversight meant that we had to navigate this challenge on our own. Eventually, I returned the rental car and took an Uber back to the port at a hefty cost of 115 Euros. The entire process, from arriving at the port to actually boarding the yacht, took a stressful 90 minutes. The journey from the car rental drop-off to the port gate, a mere three minutes, was the most frustrating part. It seemed that R-C did not anticipate guests arriving under their own steam, as the majority of the other passengers—around 90%—were from the United States and had been conveniently transported by coach as part of their trip package. This oversight felt distinctly amateurish. While R-C did eventually refund my exorbitant Uber fare, it required effort. Onboard Elegance and Comfort Once we were finally on board, the yacht immediately impressed us. It did not feel like a typical cruise ship; rather, it was more akin to a luxurious hotel floating on water. The restaurant options were plentiful, and the entire vessel felt airy and open, never crowded. The staff were exemplary, introducing themselves by name and making earnest efforts to remember ours, adding a personal touch to our experience. Culinary Delights One of the standout features of our voyage was the fantastic inclusive wine list. It included some exceptional gems that would cost a small fortune at a standard restaurant. The personable sommelier had crafted an impressive list that catered to all tastes. Typically, I tend to pay extra for wine on cruises due to the generic offerings, as I had experienced with Silversea. However, R-C truly excelled in this department. Unexpected Entertainment Evening entertainment was another pleasant surprise. The yacht hosted a deck White Party and several other engaging events. We had not anticipated any entertainment, so these activities added an unexpected layer of enjoyment to our evenings. Reflection on the Experience Despite the rocky start, the yacht managed to win us over completely. It provided a unique and upscale alternative to traditional cruising, one that even our cruise-averse friends could appreciate. The seamless blend of luxury, personalised service, amazing food (great Lobster) , and unexpected entertainment made for an unforgettable experience. Areas for Improvement Clearer communication regarding port logistics would have saved us a great deal of stress and time. Having staff present at key points to assist guests arriving via their own arrangements would greatly enhance the overall experience. While I am confident they can resolve the port issue, I am more concerned about the integral steps leading up to and onto the yacht. These steps are steep and very long, making them daunting and potentially dangerous, especially for those with mobility issues. My wife, who is quite fit but has double knee replacements, found the steps challenging to navigate. This difficulty was significant enough that we chose not to leave the ship on one occasion. Despite our request for a more accessible route, we were informed that it would take an hour to arrange. Having a more accessible exit deployed at every port would significantly enhance the experience for all passengers. I eagerly anticipate our return, hoping that by then, the yacht will have improved its accessibility features, making it more accommodating for guests with disabilities. A Final Note In conclusion, our experience on the yacht was a testament to the potential for luxury cruising to evolve beyond traditional boundaries. It offered a sophisticated, relaxed atmosphere that redefined what a cruise could be.
