Ship Reviews

Great Cruise. Ship doesn't look old. Rooms smelled like sewage, some outdated furniture in room. Food was pretty bad for Royal Caribbean Standard, after being on the Explorer of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas. The ship did move a lot at night on the way to Sitka. If you get sea sick this cruise is not for you. Great staff and very funny. Entertainment was very mid. Some of the cast was not good, we did enjoy the crew talent show, which was ironically better than the shows performed by professionals. The brazillian BBQ was one of the best restaurants. Back onto the topic of ship movement, the ship did shake a lot at night, going up and down a few tens of feet. It was pretty bad. The rooms are also pretty small, we got a room with one queen bed, a bed on top of the queen bed, and then a sofa bed.

Service from staff was 9.5/10, so friendly they really seem to love their job. Food was hit miss, a few supper were 9/10 ( prime rib, pecan crust salmon, herb shrimp) some were 7/10 (fish, roast beef, seafood pasta). The same with appetizers, allowed to order more than 1, remember that! Late night pizza was always great to have! Alaska ports were great, such a beautiful part of the world. It's an older ship but well kept in my opinion. The price was right for us. Shows were not impressive, stage shows had way too much costume changes and not a theme to follow. Staff talent show was unbelievable, way better singer that show singers. Game shows were quirky but funny. The sing along piano bar was fantastic, young man was so talented. The price for a window room was reasonable. No need for balcony room in Alaska, always lots room on upper decks.

Short version: skip the land package. Book your own train travel and go to Talkeetna. Great cruise, looking forward to doing again! Long version: I could not find any reviews of this package before we began our vacation. We had the 1B three night pre-cruise land tour through Anchorage, Denali, and Talkeetna. It was followed by a seven night southbound cruise. We could not have asked for better weather or better guides for our experiences. We flew to Anchorage and were greeted at the airport by a tour company on behalf of Royal Caribbean. They were staged in several locations throughout the airport and made a transfer to the hotel easy. At the Anchorage Marriott, we later met with our group land tour person, Colleen, who was excellent in her attention to detail and friendliness. She kept everything in motion the next three days until we reached the ship to set sail. Jimmy drove our coach for the whole trip. About the land package. Colleen kept us on track and made plans well known. She was funny, thorough and full of great stories and details along the way. We enjoyed what we saw but the amount of required bus time to make it happen is a no-go in the future. It would have been so much better to have traveled by train all the way. Day 1, we enjoyed the train transfer from Anchorage to Talkeetna. (3hr) The food and service were excellent and the views amazing. We then had to transfer to a motor coach to outside of Denali at the Denali Park Village. (3 hrs) The DPV was on a river with beautiful grounds. The main lodge was gorgeous. The camp dinner theater was hokey-fun and tasty. Many in our group found the accommodations to be a bit too much like a summer camp for their liking. It was clean and I slept well. Day 2 Colleen sent us on a 5:20am school bus for the trip into Denali park, about 20 minutes away. The DPV lodge coffee shop was not up to the early demand for coffee but the Denali welcome center was ready. Our park bus driver/guide had a few stops in the park giving information, leading a hike or showing us things to see. It was very beautiful and foggy on the mountain tops. We spotted a moose several miles away but no other large creatures.(4 hours in park total) We then boarded our Jimmy-driven coach and made our way back to Talkeetna. (3.5 hrs). After shopping in downtown Denali and on our way, the mountain poked her head out through the clouds as we drove. Mary Carey’s Mountain View Lodge was a great stops for sweets and scenic overlook. Even better was pulling into the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge! This was a superb spot for our night’s stay as well as moose in the yard and views of Denali. We had a fun downtown dinner and they had a free shuttle to and from. Day 3 was not as early but brought a motor coach ride back to Anchorage. (3hr) we walked around and lunched while our bags were pulled and sent to the ship. We loaded back into the motor coach for the ride down to Seward. (3 more hours) A stop at a wildlife conservation center brought many big animals. Colleen and Jimmy waved good-bye at the pier terminal. Boarding was easy and fast with our luggage already on the ship. The Cruise: Food on a Royal Caribbean cruise is consistently reliable. I am partial to the many offerings of Indian-style cuisine at the Windjammer buffet.. The main dining dinner menus always had a tender chicken, decently cooked beef, and the fun of a crowd. We did find inconsistency in mixed drinks between different bars as far as strength and ingredients many times. Our cabin steward, the wait staff, and bartenders all seem to be working hard. I wish they would forgo two nights of wait staff singing and dancing for continued service. I never enjoy the push from dining staff to make sure the feedback given is always nothing but excellent. They are not the ones making the food. It’s as if someone’s job may depend on it… Our first day of cruising brought us into the channel for the Hubbard Glacier. The weather was amazing! Everyone on deck was looking to take their jackets off. The captain turned our ship, the closest he said he’s ever been to the glacier, 360° twice so all sides of the boat were able to get excellent viewings. We saw ice chunks breaking off and young seals floating on pieces of ice as they tried to warm their little bodies. Day two we stopped in Juneau. Many in our group elected to raft the river from the Mendenhall Glacier. It was a great trip, not too rough for anyone and we all got splashed quite a bit. They provided rain gear for all. Lots of salmon in the river for spawning. Gorgeous views of the glacier and a great guide. Day 3 in Skagway we booked a coach ride to a sled dog summer camp followed by a railway down the mountain. The camp was informative and good to see. The train ride was beautiful! Passports needed, as departed from over the Canadian border. Day 4, Icy Strait point, we chose an excursion, called Bears Whales and Wildlife. It was outstanding! Though we did not see any bears feeding on salmon during our hike, the walk through the old growth forest along the river was so beautiful. A group not a half hour behind us to got to see bear at the three platforms along the river. We then boarded a catamaran back near the ship. We saw orca whales, hump back whales that were bubble net feeding, sea lions, and otters. The viewing exceeded our expectations. Day 5 we booked a tour for the Misty Fjords near Ketchikan. It was not spelled out that to get to the fjords, it is a two hour boat ride there, about an hour viewing, and then a two hour boat ride back. I definitely would not have booked this knowing there was four hours of boat travel time. The people who had children on the boat were losing their minds trying to keep them entertained. The fjords were very beautiful and interesting. I saw a few seals in the fjord channels and whales in the distance during our travels. Day 6 is a day spent at sea. We were lucky for most of the trip the weather was good to excellent. The only disappointment of Day 6 is that we headed into the inside passage as night was beginning to fall so there was almost nothing to see. I suppose a northbound cruise would feel the same as they leave Vancouver. Having land so close on both sides of the boat is a unique experience, but cannot be enjoyed when it’s dark. Compared to other Royal Caribbean ships I’ve been on, I did not find the nightly entertainment to be as engaging or as varied. Being off by four hours from our home time zone made the decision easy to skip the singing and dancing or comedian. We enjoyed the trivia and name that tune styled shows before heading to dinner. We had fun at the 70s disco party and adult themed game shows. The Centrum is smallish, the Schooner Bar is better and larger than most, the guitar player in the Pub was outstanding, the view from the stern behind the Windjammer was unbeatable. I liked being able to use the app prior to sailing to find what the theme nights would be other than two dress up night. I had a hard time packing for the cruise for some reason. Turns out it I was over-thinking. Very few people used the outdoor pool and I heard complaints of the solarium pool being rather chilly. Both the indoor and outdoor hot tubs were consistently full. A member of our party found out the hard way they really do charge $25 per pool towel if you don’t check them in but merely leave them in your room. Finally, while this is an older ship, none of the fears put in other reviews materialized. People could be seen working their tails off cleaning, painting and servicing the ship. It’s not the ship you are there to see. She has served over 2000 guests weekly for many years and maybe is a little worn. It was great.
