After 30+ sailings with Royal, trying to avoid the mega ship classes, i finally found a reason to book the Allure OTS for an 8 night voyage to the Eastern Caribbean. On this trip i put together a whole group, my adult kids with their spouses / friends, 9 of us in total. Almost all of them stayed in GS on deck 8, I stayed in an OS on deck 14. The Voyage Itself: The voyage itself as far as Royal Caribbean standards was top notch. After sailing on the smaller vessels, i can see why people love these mega ships. There is a sizable difference in "you get what you pay for" from the older smaller ships vs the mega ships. The crew was great, the food was excellent in most places, and overall, the ships appearance was always clean, even the public rest rooms on sea days. We lost two ports due to weather, it was too windy to get into St. Thomas, and when we arrived at Coco Cay, the waves were breaking over the pier, so that was a no go. It was nice that Royal did give back money from the cruise fare to help make up for this, in our case, suite guest got $400.00 per cabin back. Not a large amount in the grand scheme of things, but a real nice gesture that I appreciated, because the could have done zero. Activities: There was always something to do, new place to visit, or return to because it was so enjoyable. I found I enjoyed Central Park walks in the evening, the Boardwalk was fun with Playmakers, Johnny Rockets, etc. The two places on the Promenade I enjoyed most were Sorrento and Bow and Stern English Pub. Our group did their own thing most of the times, and we would meet up or just run into each other at different venues. The adult kids still enjoyed the water slide, mini golf, and other more action activities, I even did the one waterslide twice. I also seen 3 shows while on board. All the shows on board revolve around an 80's theme, so if you loved and lived the 80's like me, it was great. I give mixed reviews to the ice show, the skaters were great, but the theme of the show was a bit lame. The Aqua show was excellent, I love how the did the music mix to top 80's rock and pop tunes, and the diving was spectacular. The final show i attended was Mama Mia. Fantastic! The singers were excellent, and the show stuck to the original Broadway production. Pros and Cons of Oasis Class: As i said, i can see why people love these Mega Ships. The pros are there is always something to do, so many choices of places to eat, hang out, etc. There is a con to all of this though. My biggest worry going on a ship of this size was how many people. I was pleasantly surprised that the amount of passengers did not seem crowded or overwhelming in most places. The two places that it was a big issue was the Windjammer and the pools. The Windjammer is way undersized. It seems Royal bet on passengers using all the other venues to eat and not concentrate on the buffet, but passengers did not change their habits, and the Windjammer was always packed, cant find a place to sit, loud, and A/C deficient (too hot). The pool areas are just too small for the amount of people that want a deck lounger by the pool. After 8:30 in the AM, forget it, your not getting a lounger by any of the 4 pools. The final Con I have about this Mega ship was how far you had to go to do anything. Not only are the walks a lot further, but the up and down are also, no matter what deck you stay on, fore or aft. It is a small thing, but I can see where someone who is getting older, or is in a scooter / wheel chair, this would be a challenge for the entire voyage. Oasis Class Again or Not?: So the final verdict on would I sail and Oasis class ship again or not. In the right situation, yes, but as my primary class preference, No. I am an old time cruiser, started back in 1991. With a large group, i would definitely sail again on an Oasis, even consider and Icon. But for me, these large ships have lost what cruising is to me. I go on cruises to be taken care of, rest, recover from everyday life. I seem to take care of everything an everyone every other days of the year, a cruise reverses that for me, even if just for a short time. Also lost on the Mega ships is the intimacy that you can only get on smaller ships. Getting to know the passengers you seen in the same spots every day by the pool or piano bar, and the same crew members that take care of you day in and day out, especially your favorite bar server who know the exact time of the morning you need your first Long Island Iced Tea. Lost is the event that dinner every evening in the dining room used to be. Specialty restaurants are great, give you more choices, but again, you lose that comradery you make with the people at your dinner table every night. I understand these are all personal choices, so bottom line, determine what you want out of your cruise vacation before you book. Summary: I really did love my vacation on Allure OTS. Even better, i could spend it with family and friends, that really made the difference. On this voyage, my loyalty to Royal Caribbean was affirmed, still an excellent cruise line. I have a voyages schedule for this coming November and January. I hope my summary of this voyage, and the difference from the small ships to the mega ships helps you decide on which vacation you wish to go on. Whatever you choose, I hope you a fantastic time and Voyage.
Incredible ship. Love Central Park for the ambiance, Trellis Bar and Park Cafe. Would not do a Boardwalk Balcony again…too noisy. Lots of entertainment for all throughout the days. Food was good overall. We prefer to purchase the unlimited dining package because we don’t like buffet. We saw too many people not washing their hand in the restroom and entering the buffet, then sticking their dirty hands directly into food and sometimes taste testing, then putting back. Gross! Service was excellent everywhere EXCePT for the dining reservations staff, this system is frustrating for all and staff seemed more irritated to be doing their job. Royals reservation system goes by actual month and date but the royal app goes by day one day, two day, three based on your cruise. This seem to lead to confusion, duplicate bookings, or bookings being cancelled on the wrong day. This was a full cruise so finding chairs on the pool deck was challenging. Lots of chair hoggers that never used them. Speciality restaurants: Mason jar - dinner. Great spot. Interesting and good food. Excellent service. This restaurant seems to be highly underrated. Jonny rockets - lunch. Excellent service. Great milkshakes. Diner type. Giovanni - dinner. Nice atmosphere. Efficient and accommodated quickly when rain started. Wonderful experience. Izumi sushi - lunch and dinner. Excellent. Food fantastic. Service great. Friendly and quick. Highly recommend. Silk - my time dining restaurant. Not great. Located at the Back. Lots of movement. Loud from engines. 150 Central Park - dinner. Service excellent. Food excellent. Nice atmosphere. Accommodated us earlier than booked. Pool “beers fairies”. Amazing! Better than any other cruise line. Samba grill - dinner. Excellent service. Incredible food. Only downfall is you have to do buffet for your salad. Meat all comes to the table. Go here hungry!I would say this restaurant is under estimated. Hybachi - dinner. Great food. Good show. Not as good as I’ve seen on other ships but worth it. Only disappointment was not having vegetables included unless you gave up a protein. Charge $5 more and include vegetables so it doesn’t look cheap. Chops - dinner. Excellent service. Great food. Definite favorite. Park cafe - anytime! Best place for breakfast, coffee and snacks anytime of the day.
We’ve cruised many times, but this was the biggest ship we’ve ever been on. While I was wowed by some parts of its design, other areas not so much. What I loved was the Aqua show and the skating show (although a skating rink on a ship is odd to me). Although we sailed with 6500 passengers, the ship seldom felt overcrowded, other than at sea days looking for an open chair. We found the food to be good. Long gone are the gourmet meals in the MDR, but our experience was pleasant. The crew were polite and efficient. The drinks were well crafted, not crazy strong, but who can blame them since most people have the package and drink all day. New Years Eve there was a spectacular ballon drop, however there was not much else to do specifically for NYE. In general, we felt the party vibe LOW on this sailing. Maybe it was just a conservative crowd or RCCL is beginning to feel like Celebrity. Our balcony was pretty ordinary and showing signs of wear, although the main areas of ship look great. deck 12 was a great location, as was the balcony. We particularly enjoyed Central Park. What a gorgeous deck with green everywhere! Loved every inch of it. Very upscale. The Park Cafe was a favorite for light bites, as was the Solarium buffet at breakfast and lunch. The Pesky Parrot was a miss for me, it seems out of place and drinks were kind of weird. Getting on and off was a breeze as well. Overall, I can’t say too much negetive, but was I wowed enough to pay for a big ship next time…not sure.
