This was my first cruise. I had always been hesitant about going on a really big ship. SH Diana was small, but quite elegant. The food was fresh and varied. The housekeeping staff was fantastic. We were going to see the eclipse and had to make some last minute course corrections to get to the perfect viewing spot. Kudos to the captain and the crew for making that happen. There was plenty of onboard entertainment for lecture series which were very interesting. There were also boardgames when we didn't want to look out at the great scenery. I loved that there was an onboard photographer/videographer that captured our stay. If I had to say anything negative, there was sometime confusion on times when we needed to be back at the ship but that may have been because there was another group responsible for our off shore excursions for some of the stops.
Our recent cruise to Greenland was nothing short of spectacular. From the moment we stepped on board, every single detail exceeded our expectations, making this a truly once-in-a-lifetime journey. The ship itself was lovely, the public spaces were very comfortable and offered unobstructed views of the breathtaking Greenlandic fjords and towering icebergs. Our cabin (the cheapest) was bright, spacious, comfortable, had loads of storage and a powerful shower with ample hot water - absolutely perfect for our needs. Our cabin steward, Bryan, was an absolute gem and deserves a name check, thank you Bryan. Bryan was not unique though, the level of service we experienced throughout was superb. Every crew member we met went above and beyond to ensure we were safe, happy, and well cared for. Their passion for hospitality and their genuine warmth made the ship feel like a home away from home. I have to admit to shedding a tear or two at the Captain's Farewell and this was down to the crew, they had turned a great holiday into an unforgettable experience. Without exception they always had a smile on their face and welcomed us by name. The bar staff remembered our favourite drinks and willingly found a wine that I'd enjoyed on a previous day. The food was amazing (I put on 2kg despite going to the gym) and served by a wonderful team in the restaurant. The excursions were handled with precision and the lectures from different members of expedition team helped us understand the environment around us. Zipping around the huge icebergs in a zodiac and, at a slower pace, on a kayak were just amazing. The photographer shared a portfolio of images and video of a quality that I can only dream of. I short, everything about this trip was just wonderful. If you are looking for a cruise company to travel with in ultimate comfort while feeling pampered, I cannot recommend Swan Hellenic highly enough, I've already paid my deposit on 3 more!!!
This was both our first Polar experience and cruise with Swan Hellenic. From our welcome onboard to our departure the crew were outstanding. The boat was spotlessly clean; the room and steward were excellent. There were plenty of areas to relax in between excursions and the food and drink were plentiful and delicious. We were given ample information ahead of our trip to prepare for conditions and then had a thorough orientation of safety and excursion needs. The expedition specialists were knowledgable, enthusiastic and very keen to answer questions. The pre and post expedition briefings gave a good background to the trips and the lectures added more understanding. We saw amazing wildlife, learnt so much about the history and geology of Svalbard and its impact on wildlife and human life. This was without doubt one of our best holidays and we can't wait to organise our next polar trip to the Antarctic.
From start to finish we could not fault the service and welcome we received.The state room was extremely well organised with more storage space than we needed. The little touches like the glass tower with M&Ms, peanuts and raisins was lovely. The staff all went out of there way to make our trip enjoyable. The restaurant staff knew all our names and looked after us with great care. From Robert the restaurant manager, to Made our regular waiter and the sommelier Gracia we were treated royally. There was a great choice of food at every meal with something for everyone. The expedition staff were all extremely knowledgeable and friendly and were always happy to chat. I will always remember the bear hugs from the wonderful Kevin. An abiding memory is the excitement from the staff when we were passed by a large pod of beluga whales. Their joy was so infectious. Entertainment was provided by Vincent on the piano every evening. His range of material was extraordinary and he was still up with us to see the midnight sun.
So we chose an expedition cruise to Svalbard with Swan Hellenic and it was an absolutely fantastic experience. SH Diana is immaculate and our cabin and the public areas were all just gorgeous. Well styled and lovingly looked after. We had so much storage in our cabin, it was amazing, Cabin was very high spec with great facilities and drinks replenished daily in our fridge. The expedition trip was a real adventure with a 15 strong expedition team of experts taking us out each day to see key locations, wildlife and historic areas. The whole team were so knowledgeable and passionate about Svalbard. They also gave fantastic enrichment lectures on the birds, wildlife and life in general in the world's most northerly community. And the locations we visited were just breathtakingly beautiful. Dining and bar service were truly exceptional. Food was of an extremely high standard and the dining room team were just the most friendly helpful group you could imagine. Dining on the SH Diana did not disappoint in any way. From the help yourself buffets at breakfast and lunch to the Al-a-carte evening dining, everything was of an amazing standard. The lamb vindaloo was one of the best curries I have ever had! Swan Hellenic are an amazing cruise line, with state of the art ,gorgeous ships, unbelievably attentive and friendly staff and very high end dining. Not one aspect of our trip disappointed in any way. Thank you to the whole team on SH Diana for making our arctic cruise so very special.
